  1. I see, so the problem is with the x264 settings. For me, after some experimentation, I just use CRF 20 and the veryslow preset. So far, I don't need to make any other tweaks except to denoise if the source is grainy. If I want it to be transparent to DVD, I lower the CRF to 15. But at this setting, the output file is about 70% of the original DVD size, so it may not be worth it.
  2. HandBrake accepts a large variety of file formats and can emit MP4 or MKV, so how come it doesn't allow you to use MKV? If you are into scripting, you can use mkvmerge, mkvextract and HandBrakeCLI to automate the conversion. For example, you can put a bunch of files in one folder and they can be processed the same way: adding chapter stops, subs, adding/removing audio tracks, specifying encoding options and so on.
  3. I'm in the midst of doing a similar project. I'm transcoding the shows that I like to the 360p resolution (480x360 or 640x360). The objective is to create small portable files. The video looks great on my S3 (4.7") and acceptable on larger monitors. When scaled up, straight lines are either more blurred or jagged, but there is very little loss in actual details. Take for example, Last Exile. 26 episodes in 1.9 GB, or 75 MB on average per episode. I'm going to strip out the opening, closing and preview to save even more space!
  4. The anime was a disappointment. It skipped over so much material and the scenes felt disjointed. I would rather read the manga.
  5. I have a question regarding the upcoming Mospeada Bluray boxset. The regular edition is at 27% off at Amazon Japan (21,568 yen vs 29,400 yen). However, the limited edition is at full price of 37,275 yen. Does the limited edition get discounted? Or it has and I've missed it? From Google Translate, the difference is the book and a mousepad? But the book is about Tatsunopuro (the company) and not specifically on Mospeada?
  6. Did they miss that scene? Isn't it just as violent?
  7. There should be one scene where Max points his gun at the face-plate of a Zentradi soldier in space and blows him away. Is that scene intact?
  8. A spoiler for people who didn't know Darth Vader is Luk... sorry, wrong show.
  9. Call me nitpicking, but I prefer the original OP. This remake OP, the "physics" seems off.. the planes and other mechanical objects seem weightless. It's the uncanny valley of death.
  10. I don't think it can be entirely attributed to changes in our taste. Try this: how many shows that you like are from the 80s? 90s? Early 2000, mid-2000 and late 2000? For me, I find more instances of Lolicon in the late 2000 anime, and they just don't appeal to me.
  11. How do you tell the quantity left? This is different from the original pre-order, right? This has two discs instead of one and have different catalog nos. (And is slightly cheaper!) Placed my order. Now to wait for sub'ed video file to come out and watch that! (I estimated it will be 19 GB -- 115 mins @ 18 Mbps. I won't download if it's less than that. )
  12. Have you tried to tweak the power usage? Am running Ubuntu Server 10.04 24/7 on a headless Atom PC. I use it as a file repository, bittorrenting as well as an almost-zero-traffic website. The HD died recently (after SMART started warning 5 months ago). I tried to install 11.10 Server on the new HD. I couldn't. So, I installed back 10.04. 12.04 is coming soon, so I'll upgrade to that then. Even though I installed the Server edition, I also installed the Desktop. I've tried 11.10's Unity and I can safely say I'll be using Gnome Classic in 12.04. Even Gnome 3 seems too dumbed down (by default). I think it's a mistake to force a tablet L&F for "desktop" users.
  13. I've read through the few posts, but I'm still wondering. What is the primary purpose - a file server, a media player, a portable WIFI hotspot, a portable PC or what? If it's primarily a file server, you can build one cheaper and more power efficient -- ATOM. Yes, it is way underpowered, but you don't need much power to serve files or to host an ultra small website. And while the casing is bigger, you can use one 2-3 TB 3.5" HDD instead. And of course, it'll run Ubuntu. It's quite easy to maintain. (And IMO, a personal file server shouldn't need much RAM. 2 GB is more than enough.)
  14. Tell me about it. I was first shocked Windows 7 did not offer the classic menu anymore. But soon, I realized I seldom access it anyway. I put my often-used programs in two places: pinning it to the start bar (most frequent) or start menu (not so frequent). I also set Windows 7 to use single-click. It's quite intuitive to me when to double-click, but since I spend 90% of the time in a web browser, double-click has become quite alien to me.
  15. I use it as my workhorse. I find a 12" a good tradeoff. It is the smallest LCD size I can stand to use and it's small/light enough to carry around. Now, I must say the Asus 1215N *isn't* light at all at 3.21 pounds -- especially without an optical drive. The 12.1" notebook I'm using for work is just 2.9 pounds -- with an optical drive. (Two really light notebooks: the 13.3" Toshiba Portege R700 at ~3 pounds and the 13.1" Sony Z series at 3.1 pounds. Both have optical drive. But they are also 2x to 3x the price.) However, I can't expect too much at its price. As to its speed, Windows Performance Index gave the Atom CPU a score of 3.5, which is just 0.2 lower than my office 1.2 GHz C2D notebook. (In other words, it is just slightly slower.) I did consider smaller 10" netbooks, but they suffer from many limitations: - very slow CPU (either slow dual-core or single core) - shipped with 1 GB RAM, need to upgrade to 2 GB - integrated graphics; can't play 1080p videos - low vertical res of 600. No way! 768 is already borderline acceptable - Windows Starter (need to buy Windows Home separately)
  16. Netbooks are fine as long as they are large enough. I just got the Asus 1215N - a 12" LCD w/ 1.8 GHz dual-core Atom and ION2 at US$484. Since I don't use it for gaming, it works well enough. ION2 ensures even 1080p videos are playable. (There are tons of compromises, from the build to the Atom chipset, but at this price, I can compromise a lot.) Asus Singapore does not bring it in (similarly for its predecessor 1201N). I suspect they want to promote their 12" i3 model (higher margin?). I just order from Amazon instead. Soon after I bought the 1215N, Asus released the 1215T, a AMD-based version. It is even cheaper at US$436. This one, Asus Singapore does bring in, at S$700. I got my 1215N at S$710 (after shipping and taxes). Atom is slow, but it works well enough for non-computation-intensive purposes. I have another headless Atom PC running Ubuntu. It acts as a 24/7 file server. It is pretty energy efficient at ~25W (plus HD).
  17. Unfortunately, most of us have to experience it after watching derivative works that took our breath away. Plus the high expectations, I don't think it is an easy thing to live up to. So sometimes it destroys two films for you: the hyped up original, and the derivative one which wasn't so original after all. Advice: don't watch the original.
  18. Not going to watch it until it is known to be good.
  19. Since we are on Star Wars, I hardly need to tell Star Wars fans to watch the 7-part . It's a review why TPM sucks compared to the the earlier Star Wars films, but he covered the other two prequels too. (If you read the comments, you'll know his review is far more enjoyable than the movie.) His AoTC review should be out anywhere from 1-3 months from now, since he has put up a trailer...
  20. 32-bit consumer Windows, you mean. I read that it's possible to go beyond 4GB for 32-bit Vista if you copy some files from Windows 2008. (Don't know, never try.) 32-bit OS using more than 4 GB is no big deal. Intel introduced the PAE supporting 36-bit physical memory addressing (that's 64 GB) in 1995!
  21. Would it be finally possible to do a slow "flyby" of the SDF-1? That would make it more impressive. 1/2000 or 1/5000 look the same in pics.
  22. You got Suou's story, right? The Yin-stuff, as you mentioned, is deliberately obscured because there's a segment missing between season 1 and 2. The episodes will be released on alternate DVDs. I must say it's an innovative way to ensure fans buy the DVDs. I'm not sure I want to watch the OVA as they seem to be gloomy episodes.
