Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread IV *Read 1st Post*
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
That was my original point, the new technologies like ISC (Inertia Store Converter) are allowing pilots to sustain far more gs than previous era pilots anyway. Who cares if the VF-25's g-limit is 5 gs less than the YF-21 when the simple fact is the ISC/Ex-Gear system grants the VF-25 Messiah pilot protection/endurance that no other previous generation fighter has. The VF-25 Messiah can be piloted at 27 gs 99% of the time while everyone else in their VF-171s, VF-19s and VF-22s are limited to roughly the 12 gs an unprotected pilot can sustain 99% of the time. The VF-25 doesn't need a superior g-limit to be practically superior to all the earlier valkyries; the ISC/Ex-Gear system ensures that all other factors being equal, the VF-25 will rule the battlefield. Obviously Brera in the VF-27 is a unique case, though the other VF-27 pilots no doubt use the ISC/Ex-Gear system as well (unless they are all cyborgs too). -

We're probably going to get slapped with "off-topic" so perhaps the YF-19 engine question is best left for a new thread -

The discussion, such as it is, was never a debate about whether the number 27 is more or less than the number 32. If Guld can sustain more gs than the YF-21 and he can do it for almost a minute it's time for the UNS/NUNS to breed full size Zentradi, strap on some Klan-style Super Parts and start mass production of the new Kal-El valkyrie. And it looked like Guld's "eyes", "stomach" and a cough of blood to me, no "imploding" ala Vampire Hunter D Seriously, I'll stick with my original post about atmospheric shearing and battle damage. If the YF-21 exceeded 32.5 gs for a minute yet never yielded, then obviously 32.5 gs isn't the YF-21 limit. All that means is that the YF-21 never went beyond it's g limit, whatever that rating may be. The dialog confirms it; Guld states "cut out the limiter and take it to the edge." Edge, meaning not over, but to the edge. Once Guld states "another minute" they are out of the dogfight and into constant acceleration, so there is no break. Agreed. The shearing damage was quite well depicted. It's actually interesting that they mention atmospheric shearing limit in the VF-25 Messiah trivia. I would guess that's Kawamori's way of limiting the acceleration of the VF-25 now that the pilots are protected from excessive gs through the ISC/Ex-Gear system. They need some kind of limitation in Macross otherwise they'll go off into Star Wars/Star Trek territory -
Good question. I'm not sure. Trek has been dead for years and the remains of the fan base is now much older. So I would think they aren't the nitpicking, loudmouthed freaks they used to be. If I had to guess, I suppose Bond fandom would likely be up there as one of the top freak fandoms. One of the most embarrassing websites any fandom has every produced, danielcraigisnotbond.com, is still running after all. Evangelion fandom was once so embarrassing it was an insult to humanity, but I guess they all got old and crotchety too How about Macross fandom?

So now were into a discussion of the super human endurance limits of micloned Zentradi? No, I'm sorry, this dragging too far off point. At 32.5 gs for almost a minute, Guld would have to be from Krypton. And if we invoke "anime physics" to wish it all away, this whole discussion is mute by default. Digressing, the VF-25 is fine at 27.5 gs because no earlier variable fighter could be piloted beyond a dozens gs anyway and Guld died doing so. But now the VF-25 and the VF-27 (with Brera) can safely pull dozens of gs without killing the pilot, which makes the VF-25 far superior in practice to the YF-19/YF-21. So I don't see a problem. However, if the ISC system's only limitation is the structural strength of the variable fighter itself (unknown at this time), then retrofitting an ISC into the VF-22S Sturmvogel II would produce a fighter capable of 60 gs without harming the pilot. -

Exactly. Or to use a Macross example, the VF-3000 and VF-5000 have number designations that far exceed anything from the VF-1 to the VF-25, but they are by no means faster or more powerful. In my opinion the YF-21 never exceeded it's g limit; the dialog states this is impossible. The g forces shown in the anime were clearly sustained over at least a minute (quote from Guld: "another minute"), which means they were not instantaneous accelerations. Had the YF-21 exceeded 32.5 gs of acceleration, Guld would have been dead within 1-2 seconds and would never have been able to sustain 32.5+ gs for over a minute (41 seconds of actual animation time, to be specific). Also, from the appearance of the YF-21 post-battle, the craft retained its shape. The damage to the YF-21 appeared to be all shear stress or battle damage, not compressive stress. We also have to take into account that any debatable structural damage would have been cause during impact with the Ghost X-9. -
Shame. Sometimes reading those sites can be incredibly entertaining A duel at a convention? Hehehe, I'm reminded of Kirk vs. Trelane

I'm not sure whether the number in the designation for the vernier thrusters means anything. They've never been described, so they could mean something as simple as a new model number. To say they denote some kind of increased rating or number of Gs is a real stretch IMO. Also, vernier thrusters have been used within an atmosphere many times to achieve higher mobility not possible with control surfaces/thrust vectoring. Macross Plus stands out as the most vivid example, where we have seen the High-Maneuver Missiles, the YF-19, the YF-21 and the X-9 Ghost all utilizing verniers within the atmosphere. They are an obvious advantage for a variable fighter over a traditional fighter craft, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be used in extreme situations. At any rate, I agree with Graham; the absolute g limit for the VF-25 is not as important since it's well beyond human tolerance. Guld Bowman died in his YF-21 long before reaching the g limit of the YF-21. The YF-21 hull began to melt from atmosphere sheering but the frame itself remained in tact. In the case of the VF-25, new technologies like the ISC (Inertia Store Converter) are allowing pilots to sustain far more gs than previous era pilots anyway. -
I think you'll be okay. It's not like it's serious and I don't think it will offend you.

Hmmm, interesting information. It's good to know more mecha trivia is on the way. Like many, I'm starved for new facts about the VF-25. -
Speaking of talking out of one's rectum, has there been any hate websites pop up over this new film? I mean Trekkies used to be the benchmark for obsessive, nitpicking fandom. Is there any websites like pineisnotkirk.com or jtreksucks.com or anything like that? There has to be some ridiculously critical website about the new Star Trek film, harshly criticizing J.J. Abrams and Co for some minor transgression that no one cares about. I'm in the mood for a good laugh
-
Oh, cool. Do they give the thrusters a name? I know the Compendium only mentions the verniers and never describes the top thrusters; I always wondered what those thrusters were called. I don't have the Flashback 2012 Graffiti book, but is the specific text reprinted in Shoji Kawamori's Macross Design Works? If so, do you have a page number?

That is funny "Fix my country"

Doesn't seem to be anything on the Macross Compendium about it. Is this something new that was mentioned in the Macross Chronicle or older information that the VF-4 profile on the Macross Compendium doesn't include?
-
Speaking of the Star Trek trailer, apparently J.J. Abrams goes over the trailer in some detail and reveals a few things about the new movie. Here's the link: http://www.empireonline.com/features/jj-ab...r-trek-trailer/ Some interesting facts about the new film.

Interesting. Not sure I follow some of the choices, but fighter generations aren't exactly a science anyway. Six generations over only 50+ years seems like a stretch to me. I was worried I used one too many with four, the VF-5000 Star Mirage being a debatable mark for a new generation. But just using real world fighter generations as a guide, there are many factors for the generational benchmark and they can change over time. I'm going to assume the VF-4 and VF-5000 Star Mirage are being declared orbit achievable unassisted based on an interpretation of the anime series, because it's not mentioned in the trivia. So is it being assumed the VF-4 flying along side the Megaroad-01 during lift-off and the the Zolan VF-5000G's flying into orbit in Macross Dynamite 7 is what is being used to determine that these were the first orbit capable variable fighters?
-
LOL, at this point in time? Seriously, Hollywood has always been making stuff that enrages people since before we were all born. That's the nature of the biz. IMO, they couldn't have done anything but this kind of prequel/reboot Star Trek movie. The last series was canceled, the last movie was a bomb, and the existing Trek has obviously played itself out. If they wanted to do anything else with the property it had to be a new cast, new story, different take on the original themes. That's all assuming they should do a new movie and the jury's still out on that one
-
That's an interesting question; what would be the variable fighter generations of Macross? The VF-0 Phoenix and the VF-1 Valkyrie obviously constitute first generation. I think the VF-4, VF-3000 Crusader and VF-9 Cutlass would be included in first generation as well. I think the VF-5000 Star Mirage would mark the beginning of the second variable fighter generation. It created the light fighter concept and was the first to use internal missile launchers. This generation would likely include the VF-11 Thunderbolt and the VF-14 Vampire. I think third generation variable fighters would start around the VF-16, VF-17 Nightmare and the YF-19/VF-19 Excalibur and the YF-21/VF-22S Sturmvogel II. It would also include stuff like the VA-3 Invader, VB-6 Konig Monster, VAB-2 and VF-171 Nightmare Plus. Fourth Generation would then begin with the YF-24 and then onto the VF-25 Messiah and VF-27 Lucifer. What do you think?

Not bad. It's definitely an ambitious project and will make for a really challenging production. Guess we'll learn how it pans out eventually.

LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Mr March replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
A case of the truth being somewhere in the middle. The Japanese film industry is small and well past it's golden age when it spawned Kurosawa. However, the Japanese film industry is still producing notable cinema of internationally recognized quality. Japan's industry in particular is currently being tapped by Hollywood, so I wouldn't jump on the "Japan film sucks" bandwagon because they aren't a blockbuster player internationally. All the Japanese modern horror classics are remade into Hollywood films and I don't need to remind most here that we appear on the cusp of an anime live-action adaptation "raping" (couldn't resist, mate) Latin American cinema is another of Hollywood's taps currently turned on full, though many are enjoying the benefits of that. Latin American directors are all the rage in Hollywood right now, with many directors currently enjoying successful big budget careers in Hollywood including Iñárritu, Cuarón and del Toro. But the Hong Kong industry and Korean film industry are also targets for distribution and remakes. I'd even go so far as to say the adaptations/remakes of foreign cinema in general is a substantial contributor to sustaining Hollywood. The new base of domestic reality-driven cinema is proving quite successful as is the home-grown superhero genre, but foreign cinema is accounting for an increasing greater portion of bankable productions and more importantly a serious influx of creative innovation. For every new film Hollywood puts out, it seems they are making a Criminal or a The Departed, a Ring or a Vanilla Sky. Hell, I just read today that Spielberg and Will Smith have dug their claws into a remake of Chan-wook Park's Oldboy. I kid you not -
If this new film is not a reboot, can it be called a continuation if it's a prequel film that ignores established background/continuity? I wouldn't think so, but there isn't much to go on either way. Perhaps the media is too eager to label JJ-Trek a reboot/re-imagining given how often these reboots are happening these days (Bond, Batman, BSG). But at the same time, it's clear from the details released so far that this new Star Trek is not following continuity and talk of the characterizations from Abram & Co. indicates it is a re-imagining/reinterpretation of at least some sort. Perhaps it will follow some facts while ignoring others. Look at it this way; if JJ-Trek is a monster success and spawns more films/television series with this cast reprising roles, do you really think they are going to follow continuity? I'm not that hopeful for this new film, but I will say that I'm fine with a fresh start. Even if they throw out all Trek-lore, what does it really matter? Trek has run it's course and is at the lowest it has ever been; this new film certainly can't do any worse, IMO.

Nah, let's look at this situation fairly and say forget about it. You may just end up resenting the work anyway and tear your gums out. This is supposed to be volunteer work that is done for interest and leisure. It sounds like translating mech'n'tech stuff is about as leisurely for you as a visit to the dental clinic. It's unfortunate, but such is life. Anyway, I'd just like to give you a big thanks for all the translations you've done so far. They are appreciated. Three cheers for Gubaba! -
About the Macross Chronicles
Mr March replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I feared this would happen, but I didn't want to say anything since it's not my place to tell people what to translate and what not to translate. I'm thankful for anything that gets translated. The alternative isn't much fun to consider. But since you are now asking, I'd like to mirror Graham's post and say I'd want anything and everything mecha and/or technology to be translated. I know you might be rolling your eyes at me and saying "yeah, well I can guess on my own what YOU would want Mr. Macross Mecha Manual" , but I'd ask you to just think about it. Aside from the Chronology/Glossary/Encyclopedia information of the Macross universe, the most often requested and referenced information is that for all the mecha and technology. If the Chronicle detail for the Chronology/Glossary/Encyclopedia information is largely just repeated, the mecha and technology seems like the natural priority. The Chronicle has already provided new statistical information on the Oberth, the Macross Cannon, the Fan Racer, and many others. Hell, we've actually been given an explosive yield for early reaction weapons in the Chronicle entry for the Oberth Class Destroyer, something I never thought they would ever publish. I say go for the mech'n'tech. That's how I see it. Even though I'm biased, I'm not necessarily wrong
