  1. As for how HG got the DYRL merchandising rights, I seem to recall that they said it was included in their original contract with Tatsunoko and that they somehow managed to overlook it this whole time. As insipid as that explanation is, it's the best one out there since Tatsunoko did work on DYRL. Harmony Gold definitely did not get their DYRL merchandising rights from Big West. Look at any of the boxes from Toynami's DYRL toys, the toys' copyright lists Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko; nowhere is Big West mentioned.

Now that I think about it, has HG ever mentioned or gave credit to Big West and others in any of their material before? From the old opening and ending credits for Robotech, they seem to have rounded up almost everyone who worked on the the original three series and collectively called them "Tatsunoko Production Co." I think they did that for The Sentinels credits also when regarding who worked on the animation (the company, not the individual people).

  2. We all know how defensive Harmony Gold is with the Macross name. But how are they with protecting the Robotech name?

    Robotech 3000

    Robotech Sealing & Solutions

And here's a case of "Who sues who?":

    Harmony Gold Mining Co., Ltd.

That's some brilliant naming choice for a (franchise?) company and epic sci-fi show. Not generic at all.

How about starting a new thread, posting all the accurate information we have, lock it, and leave it on the top of the Anime or Sci-Fi forum for people to see?

  3. hey guys i'm new here ^_^

anyway, i find that the usual modus operandi of die-hard robotech fans is to downplay macross and give high praises to robotech. like for example, they say that macross as a stand alone is a so so anime not worth your time but when macek combined it with southern cross and mospeada to become robotech it magically became 100x much better

these guys firmly believe that the only way for macross to become infinitely better is to shoehorn them into the robotech storyline. :(

After hearing what happened with Megazone 23 as the Robotech movie, I'm willing to believe that the HG crew were probably ready to shoehorn whatever 80's anime series they could get their hands on into Robotech if their independent projects didn't work out. The fans have apparently adapted this kind of thinking when talking about "what if" or the future of the series. Guess they lack the imagination the crew had in the animation department, and totally split about original material made in a different kind of media or with different people (can't blame them in some cases).

BTW, do the die-hards read stuff on these forums and make similar criticisms about us?

  4. I say let all those involved with Robotech, fans and creative crew, drive themselves insane with the attempts to go on with the show. For the most part now it really matters to a small group of dedicated people online and then a huge group that remembers it but not as fanatical about it. HG's track record speaks for itself and if fans can't see through that then it's their loss. Let them look like tools for years if they can't realize it despite all the info that's been building up and years of receiving very little or nothing at all (unless reissuing bad toys and convention panels are really enough for them). Let them be the ones praying or begging for scraps from the website, conventions, or even Hollywood.

What we should be concerned about is how Macross is going to fit into their future plans. Clearly that franchise doesn't care what Robotech does and keeps going strong despite "legal issues." It's now more of a competition of which will outlast the other, money and popularity-wise in the animation world. Will they continue to pander to its style and following even further or try to prove Robotech is different?

  5. In the interview for the Chinese Robotech website, Tommy says that Steve is not related to him. Then he says that Steve was working for Harmony Gold first, as their webmaster, and then when they were looking for more creative people (don't remember, think it was for artists, not specifically a Creative Director), Steve suggested a comic book artist that he had heard of, namely Tommy.

He worked on a couple of comics, but was Tommy well known in general or in a particular fandom for Steve to make that suggestion at the time? What made him stand out compared to others with similar histories in the business? It sounds too convenient.

  6. Did the other Alpha Fighter Masterpiece Editions have QC issues...? I mean, isn't the Shadow Fighter just an Alpha with a new paint job? I wonder what the problems with the Maia Type were...

Compared to the Shadow Fighter, I assume the others probably had minor issues normal with Toynami (joints, paint, accuracy, etc.).

Here's a review of the Shadow Fighter:

  7. I also like how the last post on the thread blames the shoddiness of the toys on the fact that they're imports from Japan...Jeez, grab a clue, RT people...

I don't even remember the Maia Shadow Fighter being an import. It was made in Asia per Toynami's and HG's instructions for the international market and look what happened. The guy probably wants something American made from a series that technically isn't. Borderline prejudice anyone?

  8. You say that like it's a bad thing... :D

I think that's why I've avoided watching these new movie adaptations, going through it once is good enough for me. It's not that I don't like Evangelion, it's a love-hate relationship thing, but it's fraking Evangelion! Even with new hotness and mecha, the mind screw's probably not worth revisiting for my sanity.

Fool me once Hideaki Anno...

  9. That's the problem right there. Who cares even if he can draw original crap? That doesn't make him a writer. That doesn't make him a director.

You don't hire somebody with a minimal amount of artistic background (even though his art is nice) to be your creative director. That is, frankly, more of a marketing job. You hire WRITERS to write your project, if you don't want it to seem amateurish. You hire someone with an actual directing track record to direct. It's that simple.

The problem with a company like Harmony Gold is that there is no oversight. Somehow both Tommy and Steve got hired at that company, and now they do whatever they please, with no oversight whatsoever.

If HG was willing to hire someone like Tommy Yune, who at best was an aspiring comic book artiest in the beginning, their criteria for a Creative Director candidate must have been very low. Anyone know who else they considered, I really have no clue who would else would fit, before ending up with him?

EDIT: I meant artist, but I guess the other word works too.

  10. I don't see why they had to make a new character for the film series. They already got a couple who never got animated or whose story was never expanded on to bring onto the spotlight. Take for example Mana Kirishima from the Girlfriend of Steel game or Mayumi Yamagishi from the Sega Saturn game.

As for the new Eva, how are they supposed to use that in battle?

  11. No, they aren't. They can use the VF-X-4, because that appears in the animation they have the rights to, but not the actual VF-4 from Flashback 2012. Tommy dodged the problem of having to work out a transformation for the VF-X-4 (since there isn't one for that plane) by having it encounter mechanical problems.

To the best of my knowledge, Tommy has only ever created one new transforming mecha. A blurry, out-of-focus image of the so-called "Gamma fighter" was used during the initial hype-building for RTSC, but never made it into the flick. It looks a lot like a transformable Conbat, with a battroid mode that looks rather like a VF-5000B.

I heard that he also made the Silverback dune buggy, but still.

Clearly he's the best choice to helm a series known for intergalactic wars and transforming mecha. Then again, the guy before him couldn't even make or draw original crap.

  12. I think HG is able to use the VF-4, as it is shown in SDF:M as a table model in one of the later episodes. I don't think they show it transformed, so that might be why it doesn't transform in the comics. But, it may also have to do with laziness, as Tommy was asking Memo, a few other fans and myself how it transformed.

Why would Tommy be a reliable source on how the VF-4 transforms? Sure, he drew it a couple of times in comics, but he didn't make the thing or create a Robotech equivalent that could even transform. In fact, has he ever worked on a project where he had to create mecha or where mecha was involved before Robotech?

  13. That's the kinda thing that bothers me about that whole RT.com comradery though... no one speaks about how bad their crap is until they get ostracized from the "insider" group. Being their friends doesn't mean SC was good but no one will say it, I'm not talking about within the circle, but out to anyone else. Once Memo loosens his gripping pucker long enough from their asses (which we know will ever happen) he'd be so bent out of shape too and finally admit that the current stuff is way below par of the what the current anime/manga animation and toys are producing, and most of those things are crap too, but the HG produced merch is is way below the par.

Makes sense, maybe that's why slogans like "We Will Win" have become popular beyond its origins as a song; the general spirit of overcoming a lot of obstacles, inside and outside of the Robotech universe, to get the series the attention they think it deserves. Basically, and not to offend anyone in RL, patriotic garbage for a TV show.

ex. The idea that the core of Robotech is a multi-generational struggle of humanity against all kinds of aliens. Also, notice how most of the characters in Shadow Chronicles are in the military with almost no civilian life portrayed.

Ironically, they tend to tie it to Macross' success when the powers that be leave them with no other choice.
