  1. I have to question whether or not Tobey Maguire was/is a fan of Robotech. It might have been a coincidence that he liked it and his company is interested in the movie, but it's kind of convenient that a lot of closeted big name anime and related hobby fans in Hollywood would reveal themselves near the same time as the announcements for these live adaptations. It would have helped if they mentioned this before, like it would be a big deal since they're already successful, but for all we know they're just following the money trend for the industry. Look at Vin Diesel (regardless of the quality of his work) for example, confirmed D&D player and proud of it.

  2. Last chance? You think HG is in economic trouble? They've survived off a trickle of residuals for this long, I would guess they're doing just fine unless they get themselves wrapped up with a ton of money borrowed to make a show that doesn't come out or tanks or something. As long as they're in a holding pattern they can probably stick around for quite a while.

I forgot about that. Handouts are their strategy.

  3. As for the progress of the LAM, something's holding it up, and there is so much speculation, I don't think anyone really knows for sure. The one script I have for the LAM doesn't look too bad. It's definitely Macross Saga, and has quite a few differences that make it fit for a movie. I don't doubt that WB is trying to work on it. I suppose only 20 years will tell when it finally comes out.

Guess that leaves HG with nothing to do except releasing toys and RPG books until then. At this rate I'll be surprised if the company lasts long enough to see the LAM, since it sounds like it's the last chance for both the series and HG to go on.

  4. James Cameron once said that what inspired him to make The Terminator were two episodes from the 1960s television science fiction series The Outer Limits - "Soldier" and "Demon with the Glass Hand", both written by science-fiction author Harlan Ellison. When the author threatened a lawsuit, Terminator production company Hemdale and distributor Orion Pictures gave veteran fantasy writer Harlan Ellison an "acknowledgement to the works of" credit on video and cable releases of The Terminator as well as a cash settlement after he threatened to sue for plagiarism of the two The Outer Limits episodes and the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever".

    Thanks to wikipedia.

I think even with different characters and mech designs, they would still have to start from scratch with the storyline, otherwise it would probably end up in court.....

    Taksraven

It would be strange if that was all they needed to get the movie close to Macross going. Imagine the credits for the thing:

-Cast and crew for the movie*

*Based on the work of Carl Macek**

**Oh, but really based on the work of Shoji Kawamori, Studio Nue, etc.

  5. It seems likely that WB will not be so distracted by fan feedback as Tommy and crew were likely crippled with. WB is going to look at the property, ask itself "Where is the BIG money?" and then make a movie that appeals to the average American viewing audience and just hope those old fans come along for the ride.

With the fan fiasco HG left in Shadow Chronicle's wake, I hope WB likes obnoxious Robotech fanboys and pie. At this point they really are an unpleasable fanbase with high expectations to cater to.

  6. So if work is being done on the LAM, what's HG going to do until then? If they wanted to go on with Shadow Rising, which companies in the animation and other industries are they still in good terms with to get that and any other future project done?

I gotta admit, I hate Doug Bendo with a passion... I was fortunate enough to be one of the people responsible for getting him permanently banned from Robotech.com.

Is there anything special about that guy (credentials, etc.) or is he just a fan with a big dirty mouth?

  7. Unfortunately, I came into anime a bit late, in the mid 90's with Gundam Wing, which sucked because I didn't have cable until I went to high school. For me it started back in high school when a friend of mine brought a VHS of the first Robotech episodes for a bunch of us to watch . I vaguely remember someone mentioning that it was 85 episodes and made from 3 separate series as if it was a positive thing. He let me borrow the video and after doing some research for it I wanted to watch the rest of it but he didn't have copies of the rest. Unfortunately, there was only one comic/anime store in my town at the time and it was hard to get anything there. Then I got side tracked with real life until a I saw Macross Plus on the Starz Action Channel that I really got interested. This was about the time the Macross Animeigo box sets were coming out and I jumped at the chance. Minmay's songs were catchy and the planes that turned into robots were cool (and they were actually vulnerable to crap too). From then on I tried to follow up with the other series and OVAs that came out until real life stuff sucked me back in.

The truth is when I read the first announcement about MacF I just skimmed through it and really didn't give it any attention at all. Guess I have to admit, back then I really did forget about love.

Thankfully, that show totally made 2008 awesome for me.

  8. Just to clarify; WB was given the rights to make a Robotech movie only, not the rights over the entire franchise, correct? Something that Mr. March said made me wonder about HG's role in the franchise's future, that's all.

And they can put as many famous names they can behind the LAM, it doesn't guarantee that it will succeed until they show something on the project and when it eventually comes out.

  9. Another thing is how are you going to pitch the story to anyone without someone chuckling or asking wtf? It's a space opera with music idols and a magic plant energy source/drug pitched to a population having problems with aging teen idol sensations and drug addiction from every source imaginable. Covering all of this with cool looking robots and explosions can only take you so far.

  10. From what I know, HG didn't receive many, if any offers for a Robotech movie. A number of years ago, HG invited Tom Desanto (one of the producers of Transformers) over to talk about the possibility of a Robotech movie. What was interesting, was that Mr. DeSanto quite plainly stated that if the movie was going to have a chance of success, it would have to be about the Macross Saga. He also told them that they need to be realistic. Transformers is a household name, where even mothers and fathers can identify the name. Robotech, on the other hand, isn't. From what I was told by one of Tommy's contacts, that meeting was kinda put a little short. It seems to me that Tommy, Steve, and Kevin didn't want to realize the truth, that the franchise just isn't as popular as they want to make Frank Agrama believe, or they themselves.

Too bad the parties interested that aren't HG can't go to the source in Japan to adapt the part of the saga people care about, since it's been going strong in another direction ever since. It would have been easier to bypass HG altogether and do a Macross adaptation, but I'm not holding my breath for that. In fact, either live adaptation should be avoided.

  11. The script leak? Sure, especially since everyone said it sucked.

I'm not sure how MacF would complicate it...Macross Zero was being released while they were working on Shadow Chronicles, and yet it didn't seem to have pushed them any harder to make SC look better.

Or do you mean that now, Macross's profile has been been raised by MacF? I don't know how that would affect things...

I didn't expect them to compete with Zero, they don't have the talent for that. With the LAM being announced and then MacF coming around and turn out to be a success it must feel like the whole thing was bad timing for HG, especially if it makes people ask the right questions about their own franchise. It could explain the defensive stance HG has about Robotech.

  12. Indeed, the live-action movie is HG best hope considering that not only are LAMs more mainstream in America, but WB is putting the movie together with there own money and creative direction to boot. This is great because even with the LAM designs still up in the air, the actual live-action adaption of the characters and atmosphere that drew fans to the original anime and Robotech is a creative issue not a legal one.

There's still the chance that it could end up like Dragon Ball Evolution in terms of quality and fan reaction. I wonder what priority does the Robotech LAM project have in WB's eyes right now?

  13. Well... I'd imagine they probably keep a closer eye on the moderator staff's behavior offsite than they do the general membership. All the mods seem to present a united front that the new movie(s) are great stuff, which leads me to believe they're expected to parrot the company line or risk losing their posts.

Besides sucking up to the HG crew and getting fan attention (respect) as a moderator, it doesn't sound worthwhile to be one. At the moment, what reward is there for that position besides posting rights and pressuring the ban of other people? It has to be some kind of ego boost if the people there are that shallow to fight over little things but serious about whatever happens in the forums. If there is some twisted fan exclusive club syndrome with the staff going around it's definitely not worth it. Maybe that's why people are gunning for you, Seto, to feel important. Also, from the staff POV, if the rumors are true, it's because you actually have an informed opinion about the series unlike others.

EDIT: Screw it, from the staff POV, it's because you know too much about Robotech's history and tearing down the image they want to portray to new, prospective fans.
