  1. Well, sex sells.

It was probably a bad time to make a joke like that even if some people enjoyed the unnecessary fanservice. But people were waiting 20+ years for that film to be an epic; among other things, to have hormones run the artwork must have turned people off. Guess they had to add more eye candy if Decoy Skull (the comic relief), Louie, or the mecha couldn't lighten up the film's mood enough.

  2. (Don't forget that Macek also has a swipe at the Japanese for producing some substandard animation for the program and concocts his own hypocritical conspiracy theory that the Japanese possibly wanted to bastardise Sentinels footage in some way to make a new show for the Japanese market. One of the ultimate cases of the pot calling the kettle black.)

It's funny that he blamed the people that helped build his reputation as a storyteller since he can't do well as when he gets a hold of the reigns. He almost sounds like a diva from that interview, or at least a prototype of Jack Thomson with those delusions. It doesn't help that he had no experience directing original animation before, yet people thought it would be a great idea to let him lead it. A total noob move if he thought it would be done as quickly as he edited shows. And after the Sentinels was supposed to be done, with plans for the Odyssey, a part IV, and V (over 300-400+ episodes for the whole thing), how quickly were they expecting to release sequels to the public? The cost and logistics alone would be a total nightmare.

  3. -The VF-11 however was not finished as it again saw service in the front lines in the Fourth Robotech War against the Marduk and the Varauta War in 2064 but was shown to be inferior in all cases to the most enemy mecha.

-The VF-11K was designed as Sound Force Mecha and had a speaker gunpod and four internal missile launchers and a Sound Energy System as well as a guitar stick control systems

How convenient, all mecha from shows made after Mospeada are inferior, cost effective, or plain ridiculous to use over the Alpha and Beta. Guess that explains why people think those ships are still the best and why the Robotech Masters overpower everything else.

And their time line goes beyond 2060?

  4. I guess you could argue that Robotech fans are only emulating the show's creators when they're stealing everything that isn't nailed down and/or on fire and trying to graft it onto Robotech. These days, it's virtually impossible to find a Robotech fansite that hasn't stolen something from one of the later Macross shows, or any of a host of other mecha shows. Even the much-lauded (among RT fans) Unofficial Robotech Reference Guide includes a bunch of mecha that aren't even in Robotech. The sad part is it's one of the more conservative ones... I've seen Robotech fans trying to incorporate mecha, characters, and stories from as far afield as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Godannar.

I can understand if fans want to use the Macross mecha for the RPG, but to make up stories to make it fit into the universe is too much. It might be imitating the Palladium gaming experience, but they don't really have to Robotech everything for it to work. With this thinking, I'm waiting for someone to adapt the MacF stuff as anti-Invid mecha, etc. It would be okay if they acknowledge the source material instead of relaying everything to HG. Also, spell check can do wonders for these sites.

Btw, from canon and fansites, how many wars have there been now and when will they end?

EDIT: Making statistics are fine to play with the mecha in game, but not the lengths the backstories made for these mecha are changed.

  5. Although some of Macek's work are kinda unacceptable in the macross universe

    Such as "Thinking Caps"

That totally goes against the BCS System used by the YF-21 and the VF-27

I guess he was trying to explain every event happening in the original macross

You forget, Macek is almost God of the Robotech universe and the fandom. They'll make anything he says work, no matter what in any form possible with other people's stuff.

  6. By the way...is Robotech fandom the only one that takes bits and pieces of existing shows and tries to turn them into "original" Robotech works...? Yes...? I thought so.

That's definitely a trend I've seen only in Robotech. I guess the genuine ones are only following Carl Macek's example, which is disturbing since they're the only ones anywhere who find this kind of thing acceptable now. But whatever, it emphasizes how unoriginal the whole thing is anyway.

  7. Someone already beat you to the punch:

I thought it was hilarious...but apparently there are a bunch of people with no sense of humor who inexplicably love Macross.

Or maybe everyone is so used to HG ripping off everything that isn't nailed down, that they can't appreciate a pretty nasty joke on Robotech...

Gosh, I never saw it that way before, but that totally makes sense now. If Robotech can't stand on it's own in whatever bold new direction people want it to go, let it be mocked for what it can't have/become. Sucks for HG trying to distance the franchise away from Macross while the fans really can't let it go.

  8. Another point i'd like to raise is the fact that other successful franchises, Transformers in particular, have tried to avoid as much publicity for their releases as possible, and i believe that it is probably only due to the constant requests of viewers for trailers etc that Michael Bay et al. have succombed and released the teaser they did with the Superbowl. It is my opinion that a lack of promotional material makes the final product much more appealing to watch, particularly if you are a fan of the franchise.

To sum up what i was trying to suggest through this entire post, i think it's time for people to stop complaining about not having updates and promotional stuff and instead focus on supporting all the people who are trying to bring us further installments of Robotech.

How are you supposed to get people's attention ($$$) if you don't spread the word on the damn thing you're supposedly working on in ANY form? This is a business, of course it needs advertising.

  9. You know, it's one thing to do the PR lie and spin, but the fact that they are starting to lie about things that aren't even important are quite funny.

The people there gotta be tired with the PR guy feeding them lies all the time. Why not let some of the other crew take over PR since they can't be doing anything important now? Heck, the creative director himself should have more contact with these people. Convention panels can't be that hard to prepare year round.

  10. For any future projects Robotech will get, would it be so hard for them to end on a good note? Honestly, cliffhangers suck! It's worse if it will take years to see what happens next or the crew has no idea where to go with the story. At least fans of the novels got some kind of ending, but this could go on forever.

  11. Could it be a failure of communication between Hollywood and the Internet? Fans are making this sound like the second coming for Robotech when at most it could turn into a blockbuster summer/winter movie. It would help if people like MacGuire didn't tease fans like that and just say they want to make a kick ass movie franchise out of it. But you're right Gubaba, people are expecting this to be an epic lasting at least 3-9 movies or something.

  12. I also can't help but point out the absurdity of your comment "It might have been a coincidence that he liked it and his company is interested in the movie." Its no mere coincidence that a company would have the same interests as its founder. It also telling when Tobey has expressed interest in working behind the camera on Robotech while acting for Spiderman 4. He must be really interested in Robotech if he is willing to shuttle back and forth between two busy simultaneous movie projects.

Remember, he's an actor and a businessman for this project, and it would be bad PR if didn't say something positive about it. It would suck if he used the fan angle only to drive up the interest of the fandom as a lot of people seem to be doing now. But if it was for real, more pressure on him trying to make something the fans will like (you know, a work from a professional fan for the fans). It doesn't help that longtime fans seem to be running Robotech franchise now and their work really doesn't show it. Unfortunately, not all series get good, quality treatment like Lord of the Rings and Batman by going this route, they just want to make a buck from it.

  13. Whether it's true or not, I'd like to see if fans like that are still enthusiastic about these shows when there's no strings attached, like when they're not being paid to do it, have an interior motive, or have an newly acquired investment in said show. It's easy for people like Tobey to fake it since they're actors, but how about people who work behind the scenes like HG? Either they're authentic or
