Boards that are moderated excessively are bound to die a slow death in my opinion.

Eh... I'll second that emotion, though to be entirely fair the specific thread you mentioned is actually in violation of the site's Rules & Guidelines. I really don't see the harm in it, but for whatever reason the "powers that be" consider "VS" threads to be a form of spam. That'd be why your topic got the lock. If you want to pick up that discussion over PM or instant messenger, I can think of several people who'd be more than happy to indulge you (myself included).

I do agree that there has been some excessive moderation stifling discussion here and there, like in the Macross R thread, but your case ain't one of 'em I'm afraid.

Not a moderator, but there are a couple of things that moderators take into consideration when closing topics.

So, maybe a better thing to be asking is what are the site's rules (Seto answered that), and are the moderators going beyond their responsibilities of moderating (ie enforcing the site's rules, reducing clutter, maintaining sense of topics, and keeping the server from slowing down too much (or worse, crashing!), and keeping the peace amongst the membership)?

Our long-standing "versus" policy is in regards to cross-universe "versus". Hence, we don't do "versus" threads here. Like "could a Hover tank take on a Gundam" or "My VFA-6H Alpha Fighter could kick your YF-19's ass" and that nonsense. It doesn't cover in-universe bickering.

I'm the one who made that a formal rule in the latest revision, and am usually the one who enforces it--but not this time. Still, I never close the thread--I retitle it.
