Are there any other cool Anime series etc that revolved around jet fighters, ww2 fighters etc.

I picked up a copy of The Cockpit awhile back and that was great..

Anything else like it?

While not strictly about fighters and fighter combat, i'd recomend Wings of Honneamise, and definately about fighter combat is the slightly 'emo' Yukikaze. Yukikaze is pretty good and has some of the most amazing action scenes but beware the slight emo-homo-erotic undertones.

Area 88

Make sure you watch the 1985 OAV version first. It's much better than the 2005 TV series.

Try Last Exile, a steam punk aerial world story. There's several dogfight, aerial races and did I mention huge airship battle?

Porco Rosso, a beautiful tribute to an era that never quite existed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Yukikaze - gorgeous flying sequences and the only anime character ever designed to look like a bearded lady.

Area 88: They abandoned God and shook hands with the devil... they are the mercenaries consigned to Area 88...

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind: somewhat more fantastical, but with some superb flying sequences.

WWII is obviously a somewhat sensitive issue for the Japanese, which is a little bit of a shame considering their talent for animating flying sequences. Theres a superb anime just waiting to be made about a WWII flying squadron...
