Well, I got a really nice surprise last weekend. Two new Angry Monkey models showed up. Before I get to the model let me once again tip my hat to Rob “MonkeyNugget” for his shipping and communication. Despite the distance his stuff always shows up in a timely fashion. I have never had a problem getting things from him from Japan. Now…onto the 1/100 Glaug Pod. Some of you know this kit has been in process for a while. The sculpt had several problems and broken molds along the way. There were several times when I thought the kit was dead and would never see the light of day. I’m happy to report rumors of the kit’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. J One thing that excited me about the Glaug Pod is the fact that it is not currently available in any other kits I am aware of. I am sure there must have been a version at some time, but I have never seen one on Ebay or Yahoo Japan. This is an excellent mecha that I wanted represented in my display…so I owe Rob for coming through for me.! First..the kit…The kit arrives sealed nicely in little bags. No instructions or decals in this version but it really doesn’t need them. I’m sure future version will come with instructions. The main bag is dominated by the body of the Glaug Pod. The first thing that will strike you is the size and weight. For a 1/100 kit it dwarfs the 1/72 Hasegawa VF1. The main body is solid resin and is thus hefty. One thing that excites me about this is the seam line will be a none issue. The main body has the only seam line I can find on any of the pieces. The seam is tiny, and nearly perfect…but because the body is solid I can simply use a seam scraper and sandpaper to completely and utterly remove it. The body has several raised panels, and fine panel lines etched around it. The edges are sharp. I was amazed to note, in all the pieces I could only find 1 single airbuble in the pieces. It is a tiny one that exists in an engine booster…which ironically appears to be extra. The fine pinpoint would be easy to patch, but I was excited to note there are not any other problems. The pieces dry fit perfectly. This kit will be easy to build! The detail pieces for the Glaug Pod include all the rear engine details, and side panel pieces. These pieces fit nicely, and are also very sharp without bubbles. You will need a 1/100 Glaug to go with it..but luckily they are readily available on Ebay if you don’t have one. All in all I will rate this kit a 9 out of 10. The only thing I can think should be added is perhaps some decals and a color chart. The kit is a beautiful work that I am very excited to add to my collection. I will be starting a buildup in a week or two and I will be sharing my progress…it is a WONDERFUL kit.

SOLD!

I think both ideas sound good...but we really need to be sure which one works best...so here is my plan. I shall send my VF0 to Captain America and my SV51 to WMCheng. You both build and detail the models as best you can. Then...send my kits back to me...I will compare and declare the proper answer. If it is a tie I will pick two more models and we will repeat the process till we have a winner!

FlyingPika...WOW!!!!

not sure about sending stuff over...check out Celga.com as a starting point...they, and other companies offer bidding services...since many of the auctions on Yahoo Japan do not offer sales overseas you will need to work through an intermediary. I, and others, watch whats up, and post interesting items in the auction thread...if you keep an eye on that Ill try and remember to post a VF2SS if I see it (there was one just weeks ago...final price just under 90 ) Once you see my note you can go to town.

Thats disconcerting...ACK..
-
I wonder if the master is still in existence somewhere....
-
Yep....Ill watch for one for you and post it in the auctions section under the Yahoo Japan section.

Thanks all! Anyone else? Interest...I'm hoping we can put our best foot forward with SMT...

Gundamhead should...its his original...

sure...but we are up to 9 boosters and Destroids...I don't know how many orders they would need..but I would think if we can get to 15-20 it might be worth their consideration..especially if the Monster does well... fingers crossed....I would love to see someone else get into the Macross design and original kit biz.

very very nice

I would disagree with part of this. Recasting a kit would devalue the original, but I would argue thats all based on scale of the recast...5-10 extra kits available in the US to a small community of a kit available in lots of 20 for a couple WF's in Japan...well..the fact is most collectors wouldn't even know...but that asid...in general I agree a recast devalues the original. I don't believe a recast (especially small quantities) devalues the chance of other companies doing it...in fact, quite the contrary...if companies see there is a demand they can be more confident in filling that need...Im certain Yamato and Bandai watched sales at WF, Hobyyfan, and others to gauge the interest in their investment. I dont see there being a tie...but I would say if a company does pick up the line it does devalue the original. For instance...if ClubM came back to life and resissued the 1/48's the originals would drop in value quick. (for proof...see the Bandai reissues and how they effected the value of the original Takas and Bandais...even the non-reissued VE and VT. ) Anyways...point is not to offend the artisians so they keep doing what they do best...which I am all for.

They show up on Yahoo Japan rarely and Ebay even more rarely....the last one I saw on Yahoo went for like $130-$150. (I think) I have seen them as low as $90 and as much as $200 (on Ebay) E2046 had a kit too, but I believe it is out of stock.

THANKS!

very good point Shawn....and point taken....it's just...well..to me...the community is about modeling...not collecting. I have paid $350 plus for a model kit...more then once in fact...when I can buy things...I do. (my closet filled with $1000's of dollars worth of models can attest to that) It just feels wrong that some of these beutiful art works are sitting in closets somewhere and people can't build them. I would love it if we could contact the artisans and get their permission...if I knew how, I would. Im not trying to get preachy, and I promise to try and continue to be respectful. It just seems most of our hearts are in the right place. Valkyrie did a gorgeous VF4 recast...I'm certain he did it for the love of the kit not profit ...and it created much good will... Rohby's JM the same.... Its not like we are Monsters in Motion, HobbyFan, or E2046...it feels more like a group of friends....a family helping each other revel in the hobby we love so very much...so much so that we escape from reality here and share our dreams, goals, successes...and failures here. I know there are boards where I would be flamed and hated for even mentioning recasting. Boards where people buy their models and toys MIB and hermetically seal them away...I don't want to become a recast shop..but I do like the balance we have. Anyways..its your board...and I dont want to make you, or anyone else uncomfortable...if I am ever out of line, you have my word, there will be no hard feelings, and no bad blood...please...simply say the word and I will back off. Thank you for your wonderful site, and this wonderful family that I love to share my passions with.

one at a time is probably more then enough...besides...Im in the middle of 4! But...yes...I didn't think of it at first...and I would be happy to buy one if we get 20 buyers...but I would guess we could cut that price in half (maybe more...maybe less...depending on the number of parts...which I am not familer with) if we recast it ourselves and get a decent number of buyers...the molds should turn out 20 castings...so the mold investment is split 20 ways...might be worth doing....Carls offer is very generous...but a recast of a good recast would also be fine. You will get some generational shrinkage, but we are only talking one extra level...so I think it's reasonable...and honestly, I would rather work with a good recast (if someone has one) then Carl's original...which is worth quite a bit more. If Carls game someday its a wonderful offer...and I would not expect to break anything..but you do get into spots like you are best off (in some cases) cleaning off sprues and flash...and fixing problems before casting 20 kits...someone with a recast who wants to share and is going to build it probably would not mind doing that, or having it done...I would not want to ask Carl to do that. Just a thought.

To bad we can't find one...I could probably recast it for less... I almost snagged one on Yahoo Japan a while ago...
