  1. So after wanting to see it for years, i finally watched Ballistic Kiss, one of only 2 films directed by Donnie Yen (the other being Legend of the Wolf) and i have to say i was very disappointed. The fight scenes were made up of too many closeups and quick shots and this movie took the standard action movie trope of infinite ammo to an absurd degree. The story was okay, but otherwise this movie is better left unseen. Since i watched Ballistic Kiss, i also went back and watched Legend of the Wolf. There was a huge difference in quality, while BK was disappointing, LotW was very enjoyable. I think it may be because Donnie was trying to make BK as a John Woo style heroic bloodshed shoot-em-up movie while LotW was just a kung fu movie. Obviously (based on his recent work doing action directing) Donnie is suited to kung fu fight choreography and directing.
  2. Thats how much the bootleg Bandai Mac7 toys were going for.
  3. Wouldn't they have to pay HG for using the word 'Macross'?
  4. The thick V.1 (what i have) doesn't have the jacks to connect to a TV. The door certainly is more flimsy, but if you get a good case to store it and you aren't rough with it i'm sure it wouldn't break.
  5. I really wish Square will resurrect the old standard system they used to use on the pre-FFXII games. Just something simple where i command all my party members, none of this AI nonsense.
  6. I have the old version and my friend has the thin one (the newest one is download only and , i think, doesn't use the disks) the best thing about the thin is that it has RCA jack that allows you to plug it into a TV.
  7. So, i finally picked up this game yesterday and played about 6 hours. The thing that stood out the most was how much i dislike the battle system. I absolutely hate not being able to give commands to my other party members. And the game is over if the leader dies and the other 2 are still alive, thats just plain dumb. As usual Square puts out very pretty visuals and epic storytelling. FFXII's Vaan was a horrific failure of a main character, so this game gets a one-up on that department. I kinda like how Lightning is a pragmatic tough girl and Snow is a wannabe hero. Is Vanille supposed to have an Australian accent?
  8. considering its size and that is the import price, its pretty cheap
  9. They are really cheap, about $30
  10. Saw this cool movie from the 70's called Duel to the Death about a duel between the best swordsmen from china and Japan. Since it was a hong kong production, the Japanese are the bad guys (not the Japanese duelist though) but the main Japanese Duelist is awesome. Lots of crazy ninja action and a really good fight at the end.
  11. the bike looks like a green version of Cloud's bike in Final Fantasy 7: AC
  12. I'd like to mention The Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba (no not the one with Van Damme and Gomez Adams). I've only seen the US dub, but i still love the movie. Sonny Chiba is so badass and cool in this movie, he does some truly mean and ruthless things and he's the hero! Maybe I'm not used to such an antihero in a martial arts movie, but this movie certainly has an exploitation movie feel to it. Did anyone know that prior to Bruce Lee's death, they were planning a Chiba vs Lee movie. That would have been epic. The greatest Japanese Karate star versus the greatest Hong Kong Kung Fu star would've surpassed all other great teamups.(Lee vs Norris, Chan vs Li, Hung vs Yen etc.)
  13. LOL Francis Ford Coppola to direct some run of the mill popcorn sci-fi movie??? Yeah, that'll really compliment his resume. The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Robotech.
  14. Hmm... Now that you mention it RT fandom does remind me of Scientology.
  15. I listened to the Greatest Movie Ever podcast on Riki-Oh and it sounds interesting. Loads of violence to the point of funny, sounds good to me.
  16. the robot ones are easier to stand due to bigger feet and the joints are less noticeable on a robot figure. The non-robot revoltechs i have are dante, panzer cop, revy and saber. Saber is big and hard to stand even with the display base, dante is good, but his arm fell off, i really like panzer cop and revy though. Although i believe Rin is in the fraulein line of revoltech, i don't own any of them, so i don't know how different they are to the regular line.
  17. I wonder what the implications of Grace & co's treachery will have on General Galaxy.
  18. Watched the Storm Warriors last night (AKA Stormriders 2) and i really liked it. The story wasn't as in depth as the first one, but the CG was way better (well, the first one was made in "98) and the action scenes were much more intense. Though you should know that some of the action scenes were derivative of 300, although it didn't really bother me. I'd rather see a movie rip off 300 than another movie rip off the Matrix. They got the 2 stars from the first movie and after 10 years they still look just as young (40+ year old guys passing for 20 something!) I don't think the stars, Aaron Kwok or Ekin Chung, know kung fu, but they did a pretty good job at the fighting scenes. Unfortunately no Sonny Chiba this time, Simon Yam plays the bad guy this time. What can i say about Simon Yam? Good actor but sucks in fighting scenes. So, i'd recommend this movie if you really like fantasy fung fu or over the top comic book-like action. I would recommend seeing the first movie first just to get acquainted with the characters and the world, though.
  19. I just saw Ong Bak 2. So much better than the first one. Sure, the plot was cliche and there was serious pacing problems with a bit of confusing random plot points, but the fight scenes were awesome. For a movie with such good action i can forgive a throwaway and confusing plot. Tony Jaa did the action direction and choreography and it was really good for a young guy like him (unfortunately he did the story too) I think he'll have a good career in the future at the very least directing and planning action scene. I really liked the scene where hes fighting the guys while laying on the ground and i found the scene while he's fighting around the elephant to be really innovative. Overall, a good movie only for the action scenes; dont watch it youre looking for a stable plot.
  20. Just saw the trailer for ip man 2, Sammo Hung moves super fast for a guy that's nearly 60!
  21. So since we have threads for general discussion of sci-fi, anime, and other genres, I figure why not have a thread for martial arts movies? Come talk about any good asian martial arts movies, from hong kong, japan, korea, thailand, etc. Yesterday, i watched Azumi, a great samurai/assassin kinda movie set in japan in about the 1600's. Really cool sword fights, great choreography, good cinematography, and a super cute assassin girl. I would describe it as a live action anime. I've loved this movie since i first saw it a few years ago and developed a huge crush on Aya Ueto because of it. So, if you can find a copy of it i highly recommend it. For anyone just getting into hong kong action movies, I really have to suggest my favourite kung fu star, Donnie Yen. He's a guy that never gained the recognition in the west that his peer Jet Li has, but I believe that he is as good, if not better, than Jet. He has the skill (just as Jet does) to make the fighting style of each one of his characters different. Watch Flash point to see MMA inspired fight scenes and Ip Man for Wing Chun. He is also one of the best fight choreographers in HK cinema, working on the action scenes in Blade 2, the Princess Blade, and Highlander Endgame. Some good donnie yen movies: Sha Po Lang Ip Man 14 Blades Iron Monkey Flash Point Legend of the Wolf Hero (he has a great fight with Jet Li)
  22. looks like a nice little action movie. So Austin is one of the bad guys i guess. I heard that the fight between stone cold and Stallone is really intense. (both guys banged each other up filming it)
