Wasn't sure where to post this so I'm trying here. Have a chance to buy a Yamato VF-1A Cavaliers valkyrie from and overseas seller. He's asking $470 shipped. Seems kinda high but I wasn't sure of the rarity of such a toy. I didn't think it was THAT rare but I wanted to get the opinions of some people on here.

They're associated with Bandai because Bandai owns them.
Ahh Gotcha. Just another way to make more money I guess. Smart but not good for us LOL

That, in all likelihood, has to do with Harmony Gold's problematic attempt to migrate its streaming licenses to Funimation back in 2019.
Harmony Gold has moved its portfolio of anime properties between streaming services a surprising number of times in the last ten years, likely due to Robotech's poor performance on streaming services in general as an old property that hadn't had any new material in ages. Their most recent attempt to change licensees back to Funimation ran into issues when HG's intermediary - Kew Media Group - abruptly declared bankruptcy, liquidated its assets, and went out of business just a few months after the deal was closed.1
Due to the bankruptcy leaving a lot of KMG's licenses invalid or in limbo, that likely disrupted Funimation's plans to add Robotech and its component shows to their library as well as any other streaming services that hosted that content via KMG.
Oh, yes... it has been. Deliberately so, in fact.
That was Harmony Gold's whole plan to "protect" Robotech... they leveraged trademark law and Big West's apathy when it came to the global market to effectively block anyone from licensing of distributing Macross titles outside of Japan. Big West only finally started to do something about that back in 2016, and the dam finally broke this past March.
1. Barely a month after closing the deal to have Funimation distribute Robotech, Kew Media Group notified its investors that its CFO had made inaccurate disclosures regarding the company's working capital. There were reports made to the media of significant internal accounting irregularities, including covering up losses by borrowing money intended for payment of royalties from their distribution arm. When the news broke, the company swiftly defaulted on a $100 million credit line extended by three different banks, ended up in bankruptcy, and had its assets liquidated. That left many of its contracts invalid or in limbo.
It's surprising Harmony Gold hasn't gone into bankruptcy. How do they even make any money? The only thing they have worth anything is Macross and they don't seem to be doing much with it anyway.

The GBP sporting Max looked pretty standard. You know the supers will be Tamashii exclusive extras right?
What's the deal with Tamashii Nations? How are they associated with Bandai and why do they get all these exclusives?

For some reason, they don’t appear to be available to stream on Amazon, neither is Robotech. Don’t know if it was a temp glitch or something new.
I feel like it's been made as difficult as possible to be able to get anything from this franchise. Toys, movies, tv series etc. All because of the stupid legal nonsense. I don't think I've ever been into something that was made so difficult to try and enjoy. I'm still sticking with it, just wish it was easier.

Just revised and giving myself a bump. Hope that's ok.

Thus far, legal options for Macross outside of Japan have been non-existent due to near-legendary licensing issues.
Though the situation is supposed to be changing, right now the only show with english streaming is the original SDF Macross television series, on Amazon.
I see. Well hopefully with the new agreement that will change. Thanks for the info

Great transaction with @levzloi would happily do another! Thanks!

So I've only been able to see the original Macross movie, some of the robotech tv series and Macross Plus. I've seen none of the others but want to. What are my options, if any? Any streaming platforms that have them?

Yeah..sellers are free to list at whatever "asking" price they want.....but the only price that really matters is the market price....
4 month average "sold" price on the open market is currently at 47,900 JPY...add proxy fees and International shipping and you are looking close to 500ish USD shipped
That's about what I would expect. Thanks for the link.

Age of the toy does not always equate to high value
True. I just don't get the astronomical price. It's not like it's that rare an item. There seems to be a decent amount for sale on the secondary market as well which would rule out supply/demand to an extent. I can understand it being more than the original cost and maybe being a little more than the other VF-31's but that seems a little absurd.
-
Am I missing something here? I would like to get one of these but that price is one I would never pay. I don't get it, who would pay that? It's not like its a vintage toy. I'm sure it's limited but it seems like there's enough of them for sale that it's not THAT rare.

One of my favorite designs (The Ozma itself). I feel though that I prefer the sleeker look of the super packs as opposed to the armor sets. I only have an armor set for my VF-31S and that thing is ridiculously big. It looks cool but maybe a little too busy for me.

Yet again, Saburo.
Such a great toy. Have to get mine out to play around with it. I need to get a nice display cabinet for him and the others I have.

Yellowing primarily affects white plastic. Your VT-1 shouldn't have any yellowing because it's beige, not white.
Like jenius, I don't think styrofoam has much of an impact on yellowing or else it'd be nearly impossible to find any boxed white toys from the 1980's. Moreover, I find it hard to believe that those boxed toys from the 80's were all kept in optimal storage conditions for three decades.
My belief is that the quality of the batch of plastic used is the greatest determining factor, bearing in mind that many different batches can be used within the same toy line; temperature plays a secondary role. While direct sunlight will yellow all plastics, regardless of quality and temperature.
I'm trying to narrow it down to what it is and it does seem like it's the quality of the plastic used. Because they're a larger company they probably source their plastic from different suppliers to satisfy their needs. So it would make sense that some parts yellow while others do not.

Now the question will be, what are you going to be doing with the yellowed (and hopefully not gummyified as well) valks @Lolicon.
Paint it in funky colours like the Aniversario and Tux 1j (or like the ones from M7)?
There are several methods you can use to try and clean them up. Using cleaning solutions using peroxide and water or a mixture of vinegar, baking soda and water can work on yellowed plastic. I haven't tried it myself since I don't have any that are yellow yet.
Styrofoam is a petroleum based product which when heated can release toxic gases. I imagine the combo of a hot attic or direct sunlight would releases some of the petroleum gases of the Styrofoam which would cause the yellowing. It would probably take some time for that to happen unless you're talking about some extreme heat. Styrofoam also degrades must faster than plastic. Could explain why you see a lot of yellowing in the DX line because they're packaged in Styrofoam. Of course I'm just spit balling but it makes sense to me.

Original Alto version, brand new. I don't expose my valks to direct sunlight.
Must be a reaction to some kind of oils. Could be the Styrofoam packaging.

Wow, that's a departure from the entertainment industry. I'm just glad they finally have an agreement in place. It'll be interesting to see what HG does with it now.
