1. Then again, doesn't Bandai own a piece of everything? In looking at the Tatsunoko website, even back in the day, there wasn't much good/great/worth watching Tat anime out there. Outside of Mach Go Go Go, Tekkaman, Gatchaman, Mospeada and one or two others, (Oddly, although Tat [and even more mindbendingly, Big West] had a hand in animating Capt. Tylor, it's not listed on their official website) most of their shows seemed to be pretty foprgettable. Anyone care to see "The Golden Warrior -- The Gold Lightan," about a kid who owns a crime-fighting cigarette lighter, for instance?
2. They're not bad as a basic action figure, but they're not transformable and the proportion is all out of whack on the GERWALK mode figures. About the only plus is that they are one of the few Macross objects not from Harmony Gold that is concievably still easy to get in the US (They sold 'em at Suncoast for a year in the late '90s, until HG presumably put the kibosh on it-- they still pop up from time to time in anime merchandise shops such as the late, lamented Mandarake).
3. Not likely, since the legal woes that surround DYRL make the squabbles over the TV series look like a sandbox spat, from everything I've heard.
4. Premiered '99 or 2k. 311573 It was in 2000. I know, because I was just starting at the University of Oregon (2000) when it premiered on CN.
5. I recall them trying with Mobile Suit Gundam... didn't last more than a few months, IIRC. 310351 IIRC, The original MSG wasn't on Adult Swim, just regular CN blocks of programming, presumably Toonami. I don't know for sure what time/day it was on cause at the time, I didn't have CN. But it was NOT on Adult Swim. Old shows simply aren't marketable on Adult Swim because of the demographic it caters to. Robotech/Macross is an exception, IMHO. But One Year War Gundam? Forget it... 311460 Yeah, it was a Toonami block show. IIRC, they pulled the series just before the last few episodes aired due to the 9/11 attacks (apparently, CN went ultra-sensitive and pulled anything that could at all touch a raw nerve). They later did re-broadcast the entire series on Adult Swim, but with little success. Anyway, AS has had some success with their showings of Lupin III (i.e. they haven't cancelled it yet) so there may be some hope for other old-school shows like Macross.
6. [butthead] huh huh..... huh huh, you said "Penetration"... huh huh... huh huh. [/butthead] 311458 Oh, verrrrryyy mature...just keep in mind, I'm no longer your lackey
7. The box sets are usually Animeigo website-exclusive. They offer them primarily to those who pre-order, and then, if there are any left, they sell them from the website on a first-come, first-served basis. I'd seen the Macross miniboxes and individual discs in Suncoasts and Towers in a couple of locations. But yeah, Animeigo doesn't have the penetration of ADV.
8. Option 1. Getting a fansub is possible, they are out there, but it may take some doing. But it's probably your best bet, if you look below. Option 2. NO. Bootlegs are bad. Not only are you supporting organized crime, but organized crime that cannot comprehend either the Japanese or English languages. Option 3. That will be a long wait...right now, any further Macross releases outside of what's already here (TV, II and Plus) is dependent on an amicable resolution to a number of ongoing or threatened lawsuits.
9. We can still dream. 311101 Good point
10. OK, so now we got the repeated profanity out of the way...what was all that about Anakin being made by the Presbyterian Church? I have images in my head of Rev. Lovejoy going "Thank you Jaysus -- now we have a Jedi of our own to combat this 'El Barto!'" And, didn't those shots look like they were videotaped from the LucasFilm workprint? Still they were hilarious. I loved the one about Grivious feeding all his droid soldiers dog...that was a real WTF? moment.
11. Yeah, but on the other hand, as underhanded as HG has been in the past, they can't be stupid or suicidal enough to go up against some of those Japanese megacorps like TOMY or TAKARA, right?
12. Wasn't Sentinels also supposed to be considered a sequel to Mospeada in Japan?
13. They might pack it in a thinpak, but given their packaging for their old-school series (City Hunter, Mospeada, Southern Cross, etc.) they'll probably do it up in a brickpak.
14. I'm sorry to pull this off topic, but what is this cracking issue with the Animeigo DVDs? I haven't been keeping up with the latest Macross news like I used to so I'm in the dark about this issue. I bought the Animeigo box set when it first came out, but I haven't watched them in a while. I've been getting the urge to watch the series again, but I'd like to know more about this cracking issue before I do. I don't have the ability to make backups of my DVDs at the moment (ancient computer with no DVD drive). I'd like to know what the cracking is about before I put the originals in the DVD player and turn them into dust! Any info would be appreciated. 310515 What happens with some of the Animeigo DVDs (and I put this at the feet of their icehouse, Koch Entertainment) is that their plastic can be brittle, and so the inside of the hub starts to crack. If you let it go to far, the crack can migrate into the data part of the disc, ruining it.
15. I saw 'em. Not sure why they bothered, though. They look nice, but nowhere near ready (I think they were probably non-functional design maquettes). If they were't ready, and if they weren't official, why bother to put them out for the public to see, knowing full well someone was going to photograph them.
16. Actually (kicking myself) I just put a writeup myself in the debate thread. I shoulda looked here first.
17. Sorry to re-ignite the embers of this thread, but There was some other news that came about while MW was down. Everyone's probably heard that TAKARA (the house of Transformers) has bought up a super-majority stake (somewhere in the neighborhood of 80%) in the shares of Tatsunoko Pro (If I have to gloss THAT one...). TAKARA, therefore, flat-out OWNS Tatsunoko. I'm wondering about the effect of this buyout on the ongoing BW-SN/HG-Tat lawsuit extravaganza. TAKARA said that they bought out Tat precisely to get a hold of their massive back catalogue of anime properties (for merchandising purposes). It'd be interesting to see if they consider Macross in that catalogue, and will fight for it. I guess the question hinges on one condition that I can see: Would the merchandising and other revenue they could get from Macross outweigh the costs of continuing the lawsuit? (Apparently, Tatsunoko's sales were declining across the board, and Tatsunoko has vowed to raise sales from JPY 500,000,000 to JPY 6,000,000,000 in the next three years.) And as Macross has been declining in Japan for a while (sad but true...unfortunately, Hikaru, Isamu and *sigh* Basara can't compete with Amuro, Kamille and Heero) would TAKARA be inclined to cut its losses and revert the property to BW? If it does, it could change the whole playing field. With Tatsunoko no longer propping HG up, BW may finally be able to put legal pressure on them to rectify the situation vis-a-vis Macross (the other two shows wouldn;t be affected, IIRC -- they are both purely Tatsunoko productions.) If so, this could finally be the "checkmate" announcement we've been waiting for. But it's iffy, and only would come IF, and only if, TAKARA does decide to settle or drop the suit outright. If it doesn't, Does this mean TAKARA might get into the business of making Macross toys? Perhaps a Jetfire?
18. I probably will buy it for three reasons: 1. I'd be interested to see how they handled it transfer-wise (I love Animeigo dearly, but they've got a ghosting problem on a lot of their discs) 2. I do like the cool info booklets that were on the Mospeada/Southern Cross discs. 3. From all I've heard, ADV's discs seem to be more robust (i.e. none of the cracking issues) than Animeigo's. I'd probably keep the Animeigo set as the "good china," for lack of a better term, and watch the ADV set more frequently. The dub idea sounds interesting (although bloody unlikely if HG has anything to say about it, given their past stands on dubbing the three shows). But let me say this...I will pull out my trusty 2x4 of learnin' © ® (p) if they let Tony Oliver or Reba West anywhere near the studio. Hopefully, they might be able to (as someone on ANN had suggested) coax Mari Ijima back into the studio to be the dub voice for Lynn Minmay.
19. Did you notice on the data readout on the SD one, it all comes from the Macross stats, right down to the GU-11 gunpod?
20. Or, it's a human working for the Androids, like Baltar...
21. All I have to ask is...WTF? Did Hikaru go nuts? Here it is on ...you guessed it...E-Bay
22. Both of them are Japanese bookstores which have a considerable number of branches in the US (mostly in areas with high Japanese expat concentrations, such as the West Coast and New York)
23. My Macross discs are still fine, although my Urusei Yatsura volume 6 has some nasty cracks on ITS hub...gonna haveta see if Animeigo will replace it, or if I'm going to have to buy a new copy...
24. I can see a locking for this thread in the future...
