  1. I'm tempted, because I had Trippy and I loved him when I was like 7 or 8. I'm afraid the realities of '80s toy engineering to my adult mind would diminish my memories, though.
  2. Well, the new Shield isn't a handheld like the original, nor is it a tablet. It's a console with Android TV. It's running Nvidia's Tegra X1 processor, and the benchmarks put it at roughly double the K1 that was in the Shield Tablet. I sort of feel like comparing it to an Apple TV is kind of an apples to oranges (no pun intended) comparison, despite Google marketing their Nexus Player Android TV box as a sort of Apple TV competitor. Apple TV strikes me as a media player that's dipping its toes into gaming while the Shield, like the PS3/4/Xbox 360/One is a game console that doubles as a media player. I mean, the Apple TV comes with a Siri remote, the Shield comes with a controller. In addition to regular Android gaming, Nvidia has their own store of Tegra apps that are, for the most part, PC ports. Plus, if you have an Nvidia GPU, you can stream from your PC to a Shield (which worked great for me on the original Shield and terrible on the Shield Tablet). I hear Nvidia's also running a subscription service, similar to PlayStation Now, where you can play PC games from the cloud. I think a few month trial is included, so I'll probably try it out and report back. Meanwhile, I don't even think Apple has a first-party controller for the Apple TV. As for media well... I guess it depends on what you're into. While I've had three iPads, I was never heavy into Apple's ecosystem. I mostly use platform-agnostic stuff like playing my own mp3 and mp4 files, watching stuff on Netflix and Amazon Prime, or listening to Pandora. For me, at least, there isn't a compelling reason to go with an Apple TV over any other streaming box (like a Roku) aside from the promise of games. And to be honest, since Jobs died Apple's been more imitator than innovator, and to me they've lost a lot of their appeal. My current iPad, the first iPad Air, will probably be the last Apple product I buy. Meanwhile, I've been using Android phones since Verizon was pushing the original Droid hard to make up for not having an iPhone. I'm not saying it's perfect, but one advantage that Android has had is that it's a little more open than Apple's stuff. Android's a good platform for retro gaming, with emulators for everything from the original NES to the PSP. I mean, to each his own, I guess, but I personally wouldn't pay $150 for a 64GB Apple TV that only comes with a remote. I did pay $150 for a 16GB Shield that comes with a solid controller and got the remote for free, though. And if 16GB isn't enough, the Shield supports microSD cards. I haven't tried with a Steam OS unit or the cheap Steam Link, nor have I tried the Steam controller. I did, awhile back, try streaming from my gaming PC to a Mac mini hooked up to my living room TV with an Xbox 360 controller. I doubt the problem with be your TV's response time; for streaming setups it's usually network issues (speed, congestion, interference, etc). That said, I was able to play racing games (GRID 2) and action games (Arkham Origins and Tomb Raider) with no discernible issues. I won't say, especially if you're sensitive toward that sort of thing, that you'll never notice lag but it wasn't enough to screw with my rhythm in Akrham Origins. I'd say that I've found Steam's in-home streaming to be among the better streaming solutions. EDIT: Forgot to put in a link to Maximum PC's review of the Shield... so here you go, David!
  3. I decided to order an Nvidia Shield today. I'd previously had the original Shield, which was a pretty neat if niche device, and the Shield Tablet, which I thought was actually kind of junk. I've wanted a dedicated Netflix/Amazon Prime/Google Play box in my bedroom anyway, the Shield's been getting pretty good reviews, and $149 and a free remote works for me. I'll let you know how I like it.
  4. Yeah... I'm hoping their Christmas sale is better. Most of the stuff with really good discounts is stuff I already own, and there's a lot of stuff I want but they're only 20-30% off. So far I just picked up Dynasty Warriors 8 XL Complete, Republic Commando, and Battlefront II. I might pick up MGR: Revengeance later.
  5. Ugh. I bought one at full price when they were first released, figuring that I could use a box for Netflix in the bedroom, and that the fact that it could play some Vita games and stream from the PS4 was just cake. Well, despite the fact that there's a Vita Netflix app, here we are like a year (or is it two?) after the fact, and the stupid thing still doesn't do Netflix. In fact, Sony's all but abandoned support for the Vita. PS4 to PSTV streaming turned out to be crap. Two of the Vita games I own aren't playable on the PSTV. Plus more and more obscure JPRGs that were becoming the only thing worth owning a Vita for are starting to turn up in Steam. I guess, if you know what you're getting into, there are probably worse ways to spend $20 (especially with Persona 4 on sale). But it's easily the worst $100 I've ever spent.
  6. If you don't mind me asking, where'd you find it super cheap at?
  7. Depends on what you mean by work. An RG usually takes me two days, and that's cutting the parts, fitting them together, applying the decals, and maybe panel lining. No paint. HGs, on the other hand, always seem to need some degree of paint. Putting it together may only take a few hours, but depending on how much paint is needed it could be much less or much more work than an RG. Take paint out of it, though, and yeah, RGs are more work. But they're generally worth it.
  8. Heck yes it's a good deal! It works on PSTV, and it's probably the best game available for the Vita. I've recommended it at full price; at $10 it's an absolute steal.
  9. Well, you know your son better than I do, obviously. But based on my experience with 7 year olds, I wouldn't recommend starting with RGs. Don't get me wrong, I love RGs for their excellent balance between cost and detail, but they have numerous, often tiny parts and nearly 100 decal stickers, on average. They require a little more skill and patience than any 7 year old I've met possesses. The chibi SD kits are designed with kids in mind, so they should be a good place to start, although I don't have any experience with them. He might be able to do an HG. Modern HG, especially the newest Revive ones, look good without any paint, and they're not too difficult. It's mostly building parts around the joints, then fitting the parts together. The finished kits are very posable and less fiddly than RGs.
  10. Yep, those too. And the Zaku Mine Layer, and the EWAC Zaku.
  11. Fully intended to pass. As much as I loved the original Pandemic games, I never really had the sense that EA "got" Battlefront. The reviews have sort of reinforced that notion. Frankly, it just didn't seem like a game worth $60, especially with next to no singleplayer (I'm not a multiplayer gamer). Plus, you know, Fallout 4. I was talking to a buddy of mine who's at EA, though. He said he's going to send me an Origin key on Monday, so I guess I'm going to play it now.
  12. Moi? Don't get me wrong, I'll be looking for CW Combaticons, as Bruticus is probably my favorite combiner. And it doesn't hurt that Onslaught is a retool of Hot Spot, who's been the best CW torso so far. But Gen 2 does nothing for me... I'd be more likely to buy a RID Ruination recolor.
  13. Funny, I'd say the same about the Red Frame. At least Marasai and Hi-Zack were actually in the frikkin' anime. In any case, I'll take RGs of ALL the Zaku variants. Zaku I, R1, R2, Action Zaku, Hi-Zack (Titans style and Feddie style), Zaku II Kai (preferably with the B-type head), Zaku Cannon, Zaku III (Mashmyre type, but most especially the regular white gray one)...
  14. PM Prime is coming with a little dude. Headmasters are going to be the big thing with Titan Wars, though, so he's going to transform into a head, not an engine.
  15. Yeah. I don't have the desire to import Takaras, and Hasbro's relationship with TRU has made US MPs more expensive and more trouble than their worth. Meanwhile, Leader PM Prime is an Ultra Magnus retool? Hmm. UM is one of the best non-MP Transformers in ages, so even though a Powermaster Prime that isn't a transforming cab that combines with his trailer is a massive disappointment, I'm betting I'll pick him up anyway.
  16. That's pretty cool, but disappointing that it looks like it only has super mode.
  17. I already have a reputation for being a bit of a UC purist, so if I complained every time an AU RG Gundam kit got made (which I kinda sorta already do) instead of an RG Dom, Gouf, GP-02, Alex, Hyaku Shiki, ZZ Gundam, Nu Gundam, F-91, Quebeley, Zaku III, Marasai, Hi-Zack, etc it wouldn't really help my case.
  18. Another RG 00, but still no other Operation Meteor Gundams? I'm disappointed.
  19. Speaking of PC loving, I heard Disgaea is coming to PCs now.
  20. Another tip, David- craft a doghouse near the fast travel point in Sanctuary (and scrap any existing doghouses). If you send Dogmeat away again, you'll find him at the Doghouse. Yeah, different companions are supposed to have different positives, like hacking for Valentine, or finding stuff for Dogmeat. It's just that my experience with the companion AI in previous Bethesda games has me convinced I'd rather travel solo (and get the bonuses from the Lone Wanderer perk).
  21. Is that the quest where I'd sent Dogmeat away, too, as I prefer to travel without a companion (since, in pretty much every Bethesda game I've played, they just run get themselves killed anyway). When I got to that point, Dogmeat was just outside when I left that house. Anyway... I'd played for hours this weekend, thinking that each time I talked to Preston or Rhys that they were giving me new quests. After awhile, I thought it odd that I was basically doing the same things over and over, seemingly without end. It was then that I realized that they'll keep giving you stuff to do, but it's actually the same quest. So now I'm ready to do more productive things.
  22. Is that something console gamers are complaining about? I bought digitally from Steam, so I had to download the whole thing in the first place. Were you playing on Steam? Cloud sync. I've been alternating between my desktop and my laptop.
  23. I feel your pain. The closest hobby store to me is nearly and hour away and doesn't have a large selection of Gunpla. I wind up buying most of my kits from Amazon.
  24. Steam says I've put 26 hours into FO4 now, but with a baby it's hard to say how much of that was while the game was paused and I was doing something else. I know at least two or three hours of that was when she was being really fussy and my wife was at her wit's end, so I took the baby and rocked her until she finally fell asleep. Once she was sleeping, instead of laying her down and rolling the dice on whether or not that'd wake her, I just let her sleep on my chest while I watched TV. That said, I've been gently encouraging my wife to take care of the baby when she's home, and I've been playing every night after the baby goes to bed until after midnight. I wanna say I'm around level 23. My highest stats wound up being Intelligence, Endurance, and just enough Strength so that I can get as many weapon and armor crafting perks as possible. When it comes to guns, I'm usually carrying a variety, and I'm stockpiling any ammo I come across since it ammo doesn't have weight. The only weapon perks I've taken are for pistols, though, so my go to guns are my modified 10mm and laser pistols. As far as quests go, it seems I've finished all of the ones you get from , and after I've completed . That still leaves me with plenty of stuff from other settlements and what I assume is the main story. As far as that goes, . All-in-all, good stuff, although like I said it's very similar to Fallout 3/NV. So I'd say that if you liked those, you'll like FO4, which doesn't seem to bog you down with degrading weapons and armor that I can tell and has improved non-V.A.T.s combat, but if you didn't like FO3/NV there's nothing going on here that will really change your mind. Still lukewarm on the crafting, though. I mean, I dig upgrading weapons, armor, and your power armor (and I like how FO4 made the power armor a big, stompy thing with limited fuel that you bust out for special occasions, not simply good armor you get late in the game), and I think collecting that useless junk that was lying around everywhere in FO3 and using it for scrap material makes a lot of sense. But it's irritating setting up supply lines between settlements just so you can have access to the materials you've been hoarding in Sanctuary at other places. And nowhere in the game really feels like home. I miss my house in Megaton! I mean, yeah, the house you lived in pre-war is there, but it doesn't feel like home. I scrapped one of the ruined houses, built a pre-fab large metal shack, added a bed, storage chest, chair, power, a ceiling fan, and a bobblehead display case (only found two of those so far), and it still doesn't feel like mine.
