Season finale is shaping up to be a real delight! I was wondering how Brock was going to get out of that ep ending pickle with the Charger....pretty tragic. --"Adrian! Her name was Adrian..." Okay, now to the OSI's bounty hunters: The guy Le Tueur strikes me as a cross between Van Damme and Kraven the Hunter ['90s Spiderman cartoon]; Go-Fish seems to be an amalgam of Sabretooth and Capt Quint from Jaws. But who is Herr Trigger supposed to be a parody of? Word of warning: the lap dance scene is NOT for those with weak constitutions!

AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *pictures not quoted to save space* That car is a JOKE. People should contact [is it NBC?] en masse and tell them so, vehemently. Looks like an incredibly rice-ified POS knock off of the MFP Pursuit Special [certain design cues, anyway].

The others are: Tamara Dobson [Cleopatra Jones] "She's 6 feet 2" of Dynamite...and the Hottest Super Agent Ever!" Richard Roundtree [shaft] Toshiro Mifune

Yeah. That, and "custom two-tone" paint jobs, with the sides one color and everything above the beltline another [usually black]. C'mon people, let's come up with something else, please? Stop trying to make your car look like it was "Designed by Foose" or something. Can't wait 'til that auto trend goes out of style, like neon graphics/stripes, or curb feelers... P.S. Oh yeah, and F'ING LE MANS STRIPES ON PICKUPS.

Live Action Movies with Giant Robot/Mecha Thread
reddsun1 replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Haven't actually seen this one, but I remember seeing copies at the video store and comic shops back in the day. It's got all the makings of a "cult-classic" B-movie. --"In the early 2030's, mankind discovered a new substance, Texmexium, which enabled the entire world to be controlled by a new generation of supercomputers. Because of the danger of its misuse, supplies of Texmexium were kept under heavy guard at the hyper-nuclear facilities that power every major city." Texmexium?! OMG. Sounds like some proprietary ingredient found at Taco Bell. It's hard not to crack a smile at that one. Go on--just try to say it with a straight face. Apparently one of the earlier attempts at melding Japanese sci-fi with western movie-making. Lots of cyberpunk elements. Love how the crew's ship is a Boeing B-17 grafted onto some wierd space-shuttle-thingy rear end. Found a clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcFEhiV4mgs Ah yes, Japanese sci-fi miniature modeling and rockets-on-strings SFX at its finest.... -
I'll be the first to say I don't mind being duped on this one. The prospect of these, things being real is a bit bothersome--as the Captain said "on a couple o' different levels..." My initial reaction was: that's an awful lot of trouble to go to just for a hoax. But then again, people probably said the same sort of thing--and a lot worse--way back in '38, when some kook by the name of Wells went to all that expense and effort, just to put on a radio show about "men from mars" and such.
-
Actually, not the first. IIRC, some teenager in the mid-west suffered a similar accident--got his arms torn off by a hay bailer or something like that. I remember the news clip saying something to the effect of how the poor kid had to stagger back to the house, open the door with his mouth, dial 911 with his nose... youtube it, already there for all to see. Even CREEPIER. Don't know what's worse though--the genpets vids, or the "deformed babies" videos that seem to be linked to them... Jeezus, you can only watch so much of that stuff before it starts to really bake your noodle... --ed: mea culpa on the first part; that wasn't a transplant case--that kid actually had his own arms reattached...
-
What The FOOK?!?!?!? Is this for REAL? "That's right, Genpets are not toys or robots. They are living, breathing genetic animals." Creepy ain't the word for this sh*t... "Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." --Dr. Ian Malcom, Jurrasic Park

Oh yeah, the reference to Voltron and all-things-chogokin was unmistakable. Just went back to finish watching the rest of the ep. 21 and 24's "tormenting" No 1 was priceless! --I know it sounds crazy, but they both have that rare blend of expendable and invulnerable that makes for a perfect henchman. I can't wait to see how this new Arching assignment plays itself out. When I saw that the Monarch was approaching Spider Skull Island at the end of the last ep., I was like "uh-oh, the repercussions of this ought make for some interesting ep's later in the season..." It begs the question: when Rusty finds out that The Monarch is now arching J.J., will it make him even more insecure? will he get jealous? think that J.J. is "stealing everything from him, even his nemesis"? Could it be the proverbial "last straw" that pushes Rusty into choosing the path of the Arch that even Dr. Killinger couldn't steer him down? The Dark S-7 Maneuver was comic genius!

Liev Schreiber? tha hell?!? That's a bit of a stretch, ain't it? I know that at 48yrs, his prime viability has pretty well passed, and since his severe leg injury [one of the nastiest sports injuries I have EVER seen, right up there with J. Theisman ] it's not exactly an option...but I always thought wrestler Sid Eudy was Sabertooth incarnate.

Noticed today that the Yammie SV-51 Alpha is on sale, 25% off reg price. Heads up to MW'ers who are jonesin' for one!

Yup, when I saw the pics of the production Camaro, I was thinking: okay, not bad, not bad--UNTIL I saw the interior pic. I can't believe they kept the instrument/dash layout from the concept. Just what in the sh*t is with the instrument placement? What PENIS thought it would be a good idea to put vital gauges--for a car that's supposed to be "performance oriented"--like temp, oil, pressure, etc DOWN ON THE CENTER CONSOLE, IN FRONT OF THE FUGGIN SHIFTER KNOB?! Definitely a WTF-were-you-thinking-moment of grandiose proportions...

I suppose the big question regarding the Lotus would be: how much will it weigh? Anything over 1950lbs, and the purists may accuse Lotus of heresy... This resto-mod is in the showroom alongside a new SRT8 at my local Dodge dealer; apparently it's for sale too. Belongs to one of the guys working for NASCAR engine supplier Joey Arrington. Scuttlebut has it that the 6.1 HEMI crate engine is PRE-PRODUCTION; they got their hands on it before they were even officially released by Dodge, and one of Joey's hotshot engineers actually figured out how to map the engine management software for the motor, before Dodge's own engineers had. Of course, this is as told by one of the salesmen at the dealer--so, take it with a grain of salt [or a shovel ]. While I like the new Challenger, I like the original MORE.
-
They already played that card, didn't they? With the prev gen [s195?] Mustangs? or were those usually by aftermarket customizers? I won't go so far as to call these new iterations "pony cars"; in fact, I don't know if you'll ever hear anyone accuse the new Challenger of being a pony car. "Clydesdale" is more like it. Oh sure, it's got lots of brawn and tries to look the part; but it's got "too many too's"; too tall, too long, too narrow, too heavy. Make it a bit smaller, shave about 600lbs off the curb weight, and they'll have a potential winner. They say history has a tendancy to repeat itself--it'll be interesting to see if rising oil prices kill off the market segment again [this time, before it can really even make a comeback, establish a foothold]. I dunno though, buyers don't seem willing to give up their SUV's and other luxury items, so people yearning for sportier models may display the same sort of "I want what I want when I want it--so what if I have to raid the 401K" attitude.
-
Okay, I knew it'd be just a matter of time before "tributes" based on the Challenger started cropping up. Looks like an AZ based custom designer will be teaming with Sam Posey to build/sell "Posey Challengers," among other hopped up Challenger specials. So one can't help but wonder with Detroit giving its blessing to all these blatant nostalgia-milking marketing exercises: does it mean that come late 2010, dark blue "Team Penske Special," or "Donohue Tribute" Camaros will start making the rounds on the car show circuits? Which kinda begs the question: with Ford already selling Mustangs with hyper-inflated window stickers for "Parnelli Jones" and "Dan Gurney" specials, what are they going to do when the 'Stang gets its imminent model facelift, when rumor has it the next iteration is going to more strongly resemble--surprise, surprise--the '70 Mustang?
-
Oh, thanks! I immediately recognized who that guy in the tunnel was supposed to resemble, but couldn't remember from what group. I LOL'd when he finally popped out so Rusty could see him. I didn't think What Goes Down... was so bad. They pretty much went almost from A-Z with their "familiar" references in this one; from Alien, to Beneath the Planet of the Apes, to Logan's Run, to The Shining, to The X-Men. The irony of Rusty's crack about his dad at the beginning certainly wasn't lost on me, "...oh come on, this thing's practically a symbol of his repression." Considering what a super-freak Dr. Venture actually was... It warrants a re-watch or two--just for a fun bit of trivia, trying to guess all the 80's artists/groups that the "underground cult" members had patterned themselves after...

What? I thought Steve Saleen left his namesake company, to help head up some Indonesian start-up automaker?

I should retract part of my previous post, though. From the look on his face, it could be said that Brock's brief little tussle with Ginny was better than sex. Yup, I need to go ahead and pick up the already released eps of Venture Bros myself.

Oh, for the love of God, NO!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP1NVnLY_vU The original DTESS is a great movie, a classic of sci-fi, and a pretty strong critique [sci-Fi does tend to lend itself wonderfully as a vehicle for social commentary] of McCarthyism, Cold War paranoia, and of course, the proliferation of atomic/nuclear weapons and mankind's seeming determination to pitch itself headlong toward eventual self-destruction. These remakes are almost invariably soulless, unimaginative hack-jobs, completely lacking any of the individual touches that the majority of the originals' directors put into [be it the cinematography, underlying themes, or-what-have-you] their respective works, which is [usually] what made the movies great in the first place. I know it'll never happen, but I do so wish critics and moviegoers alike [i.e. through their spending power] would stop condoning this not so subtle lobotomy of the moviegoing experience. Someone ought to just sit up in the most public of forums and call these guys out, point blank: "You guys are a bunch of bums, you know that? Do you even study the source material before you go hacking it up and dumbing it down? You're like CliffsNotes for movies."
