  1. Yeah, bandai channel is a bitch. As said, it won't work with proxy for whatever reason. Hoping Big West puts the trailer up to youtube ASAP
  2. BWHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH   That is just hilarious and I'm not surprised at all. Y'know, that explains my one criticism/issue with DYRL's narrative (how Hikaru-Misa relationship develops so quickly with so little build-up on Earth always felt a bit artificial to me) perfectly. All in all I can't say I'm too surprised by the revelation. Just comparing the difference in how the DYRL relationships are depicted vs the very realistic, real teenage relationship in Arjuna is telling.... Speaking of which, while Kawamori being a virgin during DYRL doesn't surprise me in the least I had a huge shock recently when I learned Kawamori is a father of two children (or at least there was only two around late 90s/early 00s). Idea of his Eyebrowness as a father is just.... bizarre beyond belief for me. Would you mind enlightening me a bit about Miyatake's revolutionary "production design" concept? I don't really get it, surely concept art and such had been basis for animators for as long as animation has existed. He must mean something else than what I envisage with "production design"... edit: oh boy, as funny as that was it doesn't quite top Hideaki Anno's once quip about if he just had had sex during his middle/high school years he might've never ended up in state he'd have to create Eva
  3. Only good thing to come out of the dreadful Macross II is that it forced Kawamori to realize they were going to make more Macross anyway so he might as well keep the controls to himself. Another factor was the difficulty of launching a new original project in early 90s. Macross Plus's original version wasn't a Macross story but Kawamori decided to turn it into a Macross title because attaching the name "Macross" to it made the production and funding much smoother. Besides, he had to react to II in some way! It's a combo of these two facts why any Kawamori-Macross exists beyond SDFM/DYRL/2012 edit: Kawamori backpedaling why they're in space though, not cool man. That's one change in his thought re: this all I don't like at all. Meh
  4. "virginal scent"? Wait, was that about his inexperience as a director or is that ment to be literal statement?
  5. Thanks for all the informative discussion in topic guys, especially Bounty's last post that somewhat calmed down my anxieties about potential technical issues with the discs (I just ordered mine from yesasia a quarter hour or so ago, I kinda wish I'd checked this topic before doing that). The edits are non-issue to me but technical problems seem more severe. But given that these have not been problem with everyone and that the theatrical screening had no such issues I feel it's safe to pin blame on the hardware side of things. Which really sucks for those who encounter such problems, I really hope my BD player and laptop BD drive are ok with the release. Re:cuts the silly, gratuitous gore bits being gone for good is great in my books and I'm not at all surprised Kawamori did it. In particular the ridiculous flying head gore shot in middle of Ai Oboeteimasuka? montage always struck me as extremely out of place and silly - almost a moodbreaker even. Now that Kawamori is more mature and experienced director I'm not surprised to see he wanted to root out couple of times he gave in for Ichiro Itano when he definetly shouldn't have (I'm 99.99% sure the gratuitous gore in DYRL came from Itano because he's HUGE gorehound and similar gore is present in many of his own directing works, for example the almost contemporary Megahouse episode he directed. Kawamori in othe other hand has never shown any inclination towards gore) Given that they always counted as minor flaws and signs of Kawamori's then-inexperience as director I'm most satisfied with these changes. The sound edit in Minmay-Hikaru scene is more ambivalent in my eyes, essentially it's stylistic choice that impacts the scene overall in very minimal fashion (in fact had there not been music in original theatrical cut I doubt anyone here would even long for it). I'm okay either way so it doesn't rust my jimmies either, even if I see the change as neutral instead of positive like with the stupid gore shots. Basically it's the contrast between more modern sensibilities and the somewhat schmaltzy way DYRL and many other 80s anime films used musical cues in a way that could come out from Hollywood's classic period. I've always liked that musical cue in DYRL because it's beautiful and I think it depicts the resolution of Minmay's internal conflict well - but then again I'm avid watcher of old films and I'm very much in terms with the melodrama such scores tend to bring with them. Looking (listening?) to it with modern sensibilities iti is ridiculously blunt and unsubtle way to signal change in a character. It's like I was watching 40s melodrama or something instead of scifi film. So I can see the rationale behind that edit too. Personally speaking I dig both options so again, not a issue for me though I can understand this can be negative change for many. (as for gore shots, no, I can only understand attachment to them through personal, long history with the film and generally being purist towards changing material*) *and if grand masters of literature like 19th century Russian giants saw it fitting change things for later and eventually definitive versions of their masterworks I find it hard to categorically rule out such edits as somehow impure and detracting. On the film side of things for Star Wars Special Editions we have eg. Blade Runner and Touch of Evil. So really, instead of categorical rejection of such edits I think they must be evaluated case by case. For me the DYRL edits are either positive (gore shots) or neutral (the minor sound edit) and their impact is minimal so I think the drama is a bit overblown.
  6. So wait, what exactly is this "Macross FF" manga? A new Frontier spinoff? What is it's name in japanese, I'd like to learn more....
  7. I'd like to see just how big difference is there between the BD and DVDHD quality. The show is so old after all... Still, all that collectible stuff oh god. I wanted storyboards for Sayonara (script was ok tho') but I would've never even dreamed of such ancient storyboards for original show being around... do want gahh at this rate I end up saving and getting it anyway lol
  8. Prices are what I'd expect from Japan's crazy prices for this stuff in general. It can't be helped. but oh man do I really want that Too bad I can't afford it (it's pretty funny the translations for HD remastered eps were just recently finished and now we get BDHD...)
  9. This was great read! As a semi-random question how much fixing in your opinion was made for the DVD/BD vs the Galaxy Tour DVD/BD?
  10. As a song it's not as good (still great though) but as audio side of musical drama? Beats the Nyan Nyan Medley, easily. Taken together with visuals the effort that went into synchronizing the visuals, the sound and drama together it is aweinspiring.
  11. northern cross a capella is beginning of the Medley, it's definetly on the album
  12. Translation of Kawamori's comment regarding AKB48 project (guys this is HUGE, this is by far the most ambitious project in the industry right now and if succesful we're talking about sales rivalling Eva here. Macross is a peanut game in comparison) by a friend: I am thinking of fusing the latest CG technology with the "professional spirits" of those idols into a traditional animation that Japan prides herself on, and delivering to the whole world a touching work in which there are laughters, tears and dances and raise the spirit of everyone. I plan to express the subtle expression and feelings of those girls by undergoing them via deformation process with warmth that can only be made by hand-drawn animation. I want to come up with a high quality video work that is dynamic and speedy while the girls' individual character will also come out. The story will also be thoroughly original. It will be a tale that is fresh and can be enjoyed by everybody. Please stay tuned to find out how the AKB48 members and the story will get involved with each other. My take on Kawamori's schedule for 2012? Aquarion EVOL 2012 (1 cour? 2 cour? Who knows) AKB48 spring or summer 2012 (again no idea if 1 or 2 cour show) Then in October on day first episode of SDFM aired 30 years ago we get special airing of first episode of next Macross series/OVA as a sneak peak. This is what happened with Macross Frontier in 2007 and just like the series itself followed in 2008 spring I suspect the "full" next Macross series we get to see comes in 2013.
  13. canon = way things happened in general people have taken the approach that DYRL is fictive film inside the setting while SDFM is the "real" history. But there's no explicit mention of this anywhere as far as I know and Macross Frontier at latest should've buried the plausibility of that notion. For example it doesn't make any sense if DYRL was never performed in the "real past" because it would rob the dramatic impact of its subversion in ep 24 ("oh Grace was just referring just to that old blockbuster film couple of decades ago") and Bilrer, the biggest Minmay otaku in the Galaxy, has a picture of her *in the DYRL outfit* - why on Earth would she choose a portrait of actress of her when so many real ones are around of her? The DYRL designs (like with Macross itself as can be seen in Plus and Frontier) were also the ones that following titles used. There are Zentraedi and their ships who look like DYRL Zentraedi too instead of "big humans" of SDFM. Et cetera et cetera. 2012 animated the planned ending scenes for BOTH continuities, the launch of Megaroad-01 of SDFM and Minmay concert of DYRL. Similarly there's no telling if "what really happened" in Macross Plus followed the film or OVA version (that are mostly identical anyway). The "ship design was rehauled after 2012" is as good explanation as any but never make the mistake of assuming Kawamori and his comrades actually approach next Macross title while treating some specific version of events as canon and one as fiction. I'm sure next Macross title will have references to both series and film continuities of Frontier in similar fashion to past.
  14. LOL Real men watch shoujo anime in light of that you guys are pretty weak (in other news the concert scene is awesome)
  15. unfortunately that isn't the case for me as I finally went and tested the file (download finished ages ago). It's still pixelated crap despite that I downloaded the 2011-07-30 CCCP, installed it and used the newest version of media player classic on my PC - and it should be the newest. The hell. I guess I have to uninstall them all and try again... Hi10p is pain in the ass
  16. While it was probably also a part of Leon's plan I never found that part difficult to believe in principle. We're not let on in close detail to the actual planning and preparations of the concert and I'm not at all convinced the guards etc. knew who members of Ranka's crew were. For most part they were just S.M.S. grunt soldiers after all and they probably all had false identities. Alto for sure was not being Alto there in papers *laugh* And why asume bunch of entertainers pose such a thread or have suck hacking etc. capabilities? Famous people holding such concerts isn't unheard of and Ranka herself was in plain view all the time and Sheryl being in there was also reasonable motif for Ranka to do it. Perhaps she wanted to do at least that for her friend...what they didn't realize was that her plan went quite a bit further, hah The Ai-kun bit didn't really bother me either. It has a habit of following Ranka around after all. As for the capabilities, well, frakking Vajra. You never know with them. All in all neither plussed me in any way.
  17. Sayonara no Tsubasa is way better paced film than DYRL ever was and I think narrative is much more skillfully manipulated... and multi-leveled to boot, which makes it all the more impressive. DYRL is fantastic and one of the best 80s anime films but I think it was one upped by Sayonara apart from nostalgia factor, especially in terms of storytelling. nice to see the oh so familiar positive feedback flooding in here. That's exactly how I felt after getting my mind blown last spring
  18. ahh, okay. Since I saw you posting on /m/ and all I thought you had on and grabbed the raw. Sacred Seven would've been better if they had just focused on Ruri dating anyway... Speaking of waiting for the BD, mine came today! Haven't yet opened it though
  19. Kawamori explained the meaning of Tezuka references littered in the film in the official guidebook but I don't have it with me right now. Perhaps some other forum member might be in better position to check it out. I hope you've enjoyed the great film, Solidus (you may or may not remember but I'm the /a/non with whom discussion in Sacred Seven, lol, threads occasionally shifted to final Macross film) re: the "homo" bit
  20. mecha anime selling toys? Breaking news at eleven. YF-29 however is very well integrated to the storyline etc. so I don't see a issue. Of course the new Macross film was obligated to have new Valkyrie unit for commercial reasons but there was no reason it to be handled like it was...and it was handled very well as for YF-29 count me as aother one of those who didn't like the design initially but after seeing it in movement = awesome
  21. Kawamori doesn't really give two shits about "canon" and given that film version follows in few regards Kawamori's original plans (resolution!) and he got over some regrets (no guilt anymore over Ranka's treatment) I wouldn't be surprised if film version of the storyline isn't the more finalized and definitive in his mind. Personally I'd prefer this too. In practise of course this doesn't matter at all because Kawamori is loose ball with whole concept of "canon" anyway. Expect references to both narratives in future titles
