Good news. Now, is the movie actually any good?

This is good stuff. Interesting how they talk a bit more about the way in which cloning was conducted after Space War I. They also spoke of the mindset of the SDF-1 civilians becoming a major influence toward the adoption of space-housed living, thus facilitating the broader population embracing colonization life. Kinda cool how that worked out. So Eden actually was the first colonized planet. That makes sense. By 2040, we see Eden as a largely developed world with massive cities. It would require humanity at least several decades to build up that kind of infrastructure. It also makes snes that such important military bases, like New Edwards, would be situated on a major colony world. Your translation is fortuitous as well, since I'm working on a Zentradi height analysis page. The Chronicle again embraces the "10 meter" standard we've come to see repeated in line art comparison charts and official trivia. Lastly, it makes mention of continued use of the Macross Class vessels as research and survey ships. That follows exactly what happened in Macross Frontier and confirms that the class continued to see extensive use after the war. We could have speculated that much from watching Frontier, but it's great to see it all as official trivia at last. I'll have to remember to correct the Macross Frontier to Island Cluster Class. Good work!

Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread IV *Read 1st Post*
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
You'll find odd numbers are used in fiction far more than even numbers. An odd result is also often chosen over an even result in reality, especially when reporting in the media. People have a natural tendency to ascribe believability to odd numbers or fractions and to perceive even numbers as calculated or artificial. Even numbers are seen as more prevalent in controlled conditions, where all the math works out. Odd numbers are seen as the uneven ebb and flow of real life, where things don't work out as clearly and concisely. Even for theory, odd for practice. If you're creating fiction, the use of odd numbers is another layer of realism you can add which helps suspend the disbelief of your audience. Even, orderly numbers and multiples feel manufactured and fake. Odd numbers or designations that don't follow patterns feel more real, since in reality all kinds of events occur that break otherwise orderly patterns. Short of it is, it's just a simple writing trick -

That's clever thinking. I hope it works. I'm sorry to hear your were robbed. I've been robbed before and I know how it feels. Best of luck.

Exedol's height varies greatly between the SDF Macross series and the DYRL film. However, Exedol's height is not internally inconsistent within each version, so he's not really a scale problem. His size difference from the series to the film is simply reinterpretation, much like his green skin and oddly shaped skull. In the SDF Macross series, Exedol appears among the shortest of the Zentradi, possibly tied with Warera Nantes. If we used the chart I made on the first page of this thread, Exedol would be smaller than Milia. SDF Macross episode 7 shows Exedol is somewhere over half the size of Britai, suggesting he's about 7-8 meters tall. In the DYRL? film, Exedol appears much larger than his appearance in the series and is possibly among the larger Zentradi. Exedol is still smaller than Britai, but Exedol is roughly the same size or larger than a Zentradi soldier. A line art size comparison chart in The Gold Book confirms Exedol is somewhere around 10-12 meters tall. I'll post a picture of that comparison later today.

Trouble maker We should make a demotivator about "Klang". Like the Captain America one. "Klang - I command you to!"

It's currently up, but there are outages all the time. To be honest, I've become extremely unhappy with all these outages and I am actively looking for a new webspace provider in my price range. Reliability will be the priority. When I move the site, I will naturally inform all the message boards and send updated site links to the MAHQ and Wikipedia.

JBO Definitely agree. The Zentradi mecha are all cramped little cans for the poor pilot Letigre It certainly helped Klan. She survived with all her limbs still attached after her Q-Rea was blown to pieces by Brera.

What was the first anime that you watched?
Mr March replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Tetsuwan Atomu, and a few others were among the first anime shows I had ever seen, most were in their edited North American format. My first anime film was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I was then introduced to Robotech, but unfortunately (and fortunately) none of the early anime shows I watched translated very well into adulthood (with the exception of Nausicaa). I pretty much disconnected almost entirely from anime and it would not be until the mid 1990s when I would at last attain a permanent interest in anime. -
That goes for more than just fans; financiers, studios, etc. In a high end creative field, you don't win any points for being a nice guy who listens to everyone (obviously not talking about collaboration here, but vision). But if you're successful, most will forgive you for being an ass during the hard journey towards the end result

Based on what we see in the anime, most Zentradi Battle Suits appear more "robot" than they are "powered armor". The legs of the pilot extend into the root of the lower suit limbs at most, the rest is all machinery. And if the line art is to be believed, the pilot's arms never go beyond the inside of the torso. In the case of the Queadluun-Rea, it appears the pilots legs never go down below the torso. The pilot sits/squats inside the torso cockpit.
-
I agree. Like I said, the animators seem to have been confused that Zentradi height = Battle Suit height. One interpretation depicts that Queadluun-Rea as a suit of powered armor, whereas the more correct interpretation should be depicting the Q-Rea as a vehicle that is much larger than the pilot.

Macross Frontier Series Discussion Thread *READ 1st Post*
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
I agree. Even Birla's "lair" is filled with "toys". If Birla wasn't meant to be an in-joke for the old school Macross fans, it's extremely ironic that he mirrors us in so many ways, both subtle and overt. But I'm fairly sure he's supposed to be us, much like the "director" character shooting the Macross Zero production is supposed to be Kawamori. -

Funny, I would have thought more people would say Ogotai was actually Britai, since they appear almost identical I think Birla is a parody character; I get the sense that he may represent us. More specifically, the older Macross fans. He's older than the rest of the cast and he's a working man, yet he's still obsessed with what happened to Minmay. In that respect, he is a composite character of the real old-school Macross fans, most of us are older now, have real jobs and many of us are still curious what happened to Minmay and the others. I think Birla is more that than anything else. -
This discussion of missiles vs. lasers should be sent off to it's own dedicated thread. This thread is for Zentradi height discussion. Nonetheless, I'll say this much: SDF Macross episode 12 was the first appearance of the Q-Rau and it may not have been known yet by all the animators and numerous sub-contractors where the missile launchers were situated on the Q-Rau. All they knew was that the Q-Rau was a missile swarmer with a payload of over a 100 missiles. So the animators simply animated them firing from all over the mecha, since they lacked knowledge of the launchers. Back to our regularly scheduled thread, now in progress... There has been no official Queadluun-Rau vs. Queadluun-Rea size comparison picture published as yet, but it is almost a certainty the Rea is the same size as the Rau (based upon the many instances of scale shown in Macross Frontier). Later in the series, Klan is shown properly scaled to the cockpit (as seen above in my comparison picture). The Q-Rea is shown very close in size to the VF-25F Battroid (15.59 meters) during the attack upon the large Red Vajra unit in episode 4 (which is correct for a 16.75 meter tall Q-Rea, the same as a Q-Rau). The 33rd Marine Battalion Zentradi (assuming 10 meter heights) are properly scaled when compared to the grey Q-Rea mecha seen walking around on Gallia 4. The top picture was drawn later in the series than the bottom picture, which would suggest it is likely more accurate since they would have had time to discuss errors and get the scale correct. You'll also note in the bottom picture the forward torso cannons of the Rea are drawn inaccurately (they are actually drawn like Rau cannons) while the top picture corrects this. Mistakes will happen, especially in an animated show where continuity is even more problematic than live action. It's very likely the Macross Frontier animators had seen the original Macross series, and much like most of us, they had incorrectly assumed Zentradi height = Battle Suit height (Q-Rea). Once they made the mistake, it was too late to reanimate the sequence, but Kawamori (or someone else in the production) gave them a proper scale chart and the animators were told to correct the problem for next time, which they did. Hence Klan appears at the more accurate 8-9 meter height in the later picture (which is the top picture in my comparison picture). Klan at full size was shown at the same height as her Pixie Squadron pilots, so she does not appear to vary in height when a full sized Meltran. Just to note for all, it is STAR PRO (the sub-contractor of Anime Friend) largely responsible for the poorly animated episodes of SDF Macross, not Anime Friend itself. SDF Macross episode 12 was not key-animated by STAR PRO, but STAR PRO did perform some in-between animations for episodes 10-12 (according to the Animeigo disc credits). Given that STAR PRO has a tendency to animate weapons coming out of nowhere (the infamous VF-1A "nose cone lasers"), STAR PRO may have also been responsible for animating the in-between sequences that show the Q-Rau's missiles coming out of nowhere in episode 12.

That's the image we've been talking about. It shows Klan seated with her knees up. I adjusted the picture for some more light and blew it up. I also compared this screen capture to another shot which shows Klan way too large to fit inside properly. Indeed, it's a good thing they don't show the bottom half of the frame in the second picture

Lookin' purty. I really like the statistics as well

We never did get a good look at the Q-Rea cockpit (you know, it's really a chore to distinguish the "Rau" and "Rea" now. Damn Kawamori and co., LOL ). But we did clearly see Klan seated inside it when she was in the hangar bay. It wasn't the first time we saw her in it, but one of the subsequent hangar scenes, it clearly shows Klan seated with her knees up just before she exits her mecha. Which kinda makes sense, since the Macross Compendium description makes the Rea sound more like a fighter pod than a traditional Zentradi battle suit. That's the best solution I've ever read! Besides, what the heck was Kamjin eating in the episode where they captured Minmay? Sure looked like a massive drumstick to me Must have been one massive turkey Hippocows?

Just a gut reaction, but I think this is likely what was meant.
