Hello Everyone, I am going to start what I hope will be an informative thread around here. As we have SO many talented people around here, I'm hoping some of them can help me (and anyone else) out who has questions, be they simple getting started questions, or more advanced stuff.

I will start this off...Just purchased the Photo Etch Parts for the 1/3000 SDF-1 from a fellow Macrossworlder. I have NEVER done PE etched parts before, but want to learn (as I also have the ones for my Finemolds 1:144 Mil. Falcon kit). Those I kinda get how to to do as they came with instructions in English. The Yamato ones....not so much. Do you remove them from the "backing sheet" somehow and then paint?? Paint first?? carefully snip parts out, do you have to "fold" some of them??, and then how in the world do you get the ones to stick on that hang out in midair???? HELP!!

apparently my thread name was to long...It was supposed to read the "Everything I always wanted to ask about modeling, but were afraid to ask" thread---maybe a mod can shorten this for me.. ^_^

Every PE set is a unique case, sometimes you paint first then remove from the "grid", others you remove, place in the model then paint... I suggest you buy this DVD: http://www.masterclassmodels.com/disk3.html. It's now in special price by US$ 40.00 and it's AMAZING to teache how to use PE set. Of course you can do like me and learn by trying and destroying method...

my lessons learned...

if you paint first, you risk scratching the paint off and spraying it again with the airbrush.

you make the call if you don't think you can paint all of the surfaces on it once the photo etch is glued to the model.

i recommend all the various bending tools on http://www.micromark.com/Etch-Mate-3C,8737.html

i cut off the part with snips or i use a sharp blade and cut the part from the metal sprue and grind off the excees with a metal file.

the parts are typically very intricate.

i don't know how many times i've crushed a part or lost it. the adhesive sheet helps the parts from finding a new home in your carpet. use a well lighted area and take your time. that video mentioned above will help too just seeing how delicately you have to treat the parts.

so upon further inspection, the PE SDF-1 parts are attached to a kind of yellow backing paper and they are sticky on the back side. Good for me..don't have to deal with super glue on my SDF-1 plastic. So, I'm gonna paint some and stick a few on this weekend hopefully. ^_^

Wow! How did you manage to get to buy just the PE part?! I'm looking for just the PE parts for the 1/3000 too - any suggestions on where to go?

Please post pictures!

Sorry I don't have much other hints on using PE parts that hasn't been mentioned here already. I usually brush paint the part it its to stand out from the rest of the body colour - otherwise I mask and airbrush once its already on the model.

I was lucky enough to score them off of a fellow MW world member here who bought the kit and just applied a few of the water slide decals, he sold me the rest of the decals, the glow in the dark stickers and the PE parts. I saw you posting in the same thread..I was worried you were gonna beat me to them! sorry buddy! LOL! As I said above, I've never done PE parts so this may be a bit of a train wreck. B))

I think I'm gonna try airbrushing a few on the tree and THEN putting them on the SDF-1. The most frustrating thing about this is there is NOTHING to show where Yamato intended for you to place any of the parts...so as Harrison Ford says..."I don't know....I'm making this up as I go along"..

Instructions for this are on pages 24 and 25 of the 1/3000 SDF-1 Assembly Kit Construction Manual. I've got it but unfortunately I don't have a scanner available at the moment. Maybe a fellow MWer can kindly help.

Also these links may help you if you look carefully at some of the pics:
