The Size of a New Macross type fleet?

Hi, im new on these boards, so bare with me (and my bad gramma/spelling, im danish) if this is the wrong area to ask about lore questions. Ive searched the forums, but i could not a satisfying answer, so i decided to ask here.

Somehow, i managed to get my hands on DYRL, (paid with tax and all) and i became interrested in in the macross side of the Robotech/Macross stuff (have the entire robotech series) and having drooled over the the new series which will air soon, i got stuck in wanting to make something about it, so i decided to pull out some old 3D models i had (SDF Macross, ugly, but good as ref, an ARMD and a female Power armor) made or gotten my hands on, for another project. All the models (cept the ARMD) was hopelessly old and un detailed. So, i wanted to start small, and began to read up about it, but, thats where i found the first problem: I didnt have any sketches of anything, but that was solved thanks to Yahoo (hate google!) so i found this site, which had mecha and ship info.

Now, after all that strange babble, ill get to my question: How many ships is there (roughly) of each type in a macross type fleet? like, how many Bolognese class, Guantánamo class, Uraga class etc etc. is there?

Ive watched Macross 7 and the bad dudes tend to blow up everything, and destroys many ships, so, i wanted to know :)

Ack! Robotech! How terrible :) hehehe

Well, going by what blows up in Macross 7 is not really a good measurement of anything. They probably blew up more fighters than the ships actually carry :)

Seriously, I don't think solid numbers are ever provided for the size of the Macross 7 fleet. At least not as far as I'm aware from the anime or the Macross Compendium. As far as the Macross 7 anime is concerned, there appeared to be roughly one of each type of support vessel (Three Star Factory Ship, Einstein Research Ship, West Point Class Macro-Training Base Ship, etc) and multiple vessels of the Bolognese Stealth Frigates and Uraga Class Escort Carriers. Battle 7 and CIty 7 are the only New Macross Class ships in the fleet.

However, it should be noted the Macross 5 fleet actually had three New Macross Class ships, so a single New Macross Class ship per fleet is not a rule. The Macross 5 fleet also featured Zentradi ships.

The anime does confirm the Macross 7 fleet was vastly outnumbered by the Varauta and the official literature states the Varauta fleet was some 70,000 vessels in size. So the Macross 7 fleet could be any thing beneath that. Personally, I was always under the impression the Macross 7 fleet was somewhere around 50-100 ships.

Btw, if you need to see some pictures, make sure to check out my website (see the link in my signature below). It has plenty of good stuff for Macross fans :)

I already did hehe. trying to get my VF-X (Prototype rip off thingy) to transform correctly hehe, so i guess ill base it on the VF 21/22 of the pictures you have on your website. 3D is a pain in the rear when it comes to making transformation thats actually doable, with the design i have in mind (crazy design, i tell ya)

If the varta whatever their name is, had 70k, then i do recall, that someone mentioned that they were out nubmered 500 to one, so, thats oughly 140 ships, so your guess is rather good and that is what i will roll by for (need to come up with new designs for the support ships, jsut for fun)

thx for the fast reply :)

And the Macross Frontier fleet has 1 New Macross ship, 1 gigantic City ship and many "pill' ships along with many other ships guarding it. So it is very hard to get a gauge on how many ships and what kinds of ships are in each fleet. Which would probably bring up the phrase, "No 2 fleets are completely identical."

And next time, use the Newbie Thread for questions like these.

I'd have to say closer to 250 vessels, probably about 50-75% being Bolognese, then Guantanamo, with most of the Uraga's being attached to support ships.

Plus the fact that everytime you looked around at least half a dozen bolognese got trashed and then Sivil's rampage destroying 4-6 Guantanamo's alone.

"Marchalone" that 70000 must include fighters!

The Megaroad 13 fleet that the Varuata ships were based on couldn't have been that many capital ships...

At last count in MacF I managed to identify about 16 Islands (pills) attached to Frontier (Island 1) give or take one. The number of support ships and escort ships in the fleet seemed quite considerable!

Yep, the Macross 25 is back to a single New Macross Class ship. Personally, I'd tend to believe most fleets have only one Battle/City combo. But that's just me.

Personally, I try to avoid using the losses in the anime as a gauge for the fleet count, since the creators do away with a ridiculously repetitive number of ships and fighters. It becomes impossible to reconcile recycled animation. Even a strict count, recycled animation and all, wouldn't solve the question and I personally believe it wouldn't match what the creators had in mind anyway. Still, this is all just guess and impression, so no answer is technically wrong (within reason of course).

I don't know. That's the figure they mentioned in the anime and they weren't specific. If the fleet count did include fighters (average 30-40 fighters per ship), that would reduce the Varauta fleet down to about 1,000 to 2,000 ships and the rest fighters. Possible. However, it's just as likely refers to the large ships. Macross has always featured ridiculous fleet numbers. It could be either way. I tend to believe they simply followed theme and it refers to ships only.

I wonder, would the Macross 25 have 25 pill ships attached in total? :)

Unfortunately without hard numbers sometimes you have to sit and count what's in the anime, and go from there.

The RPG books are near useless. They pull numbers out of thin air. The MII RPG books claim the Mardook mothership is 50 km in size, a figure that anyone watching the anime can tell you is bogus. Best not to rely upon those books.

They also say the Macross Cannon ships were all of 488m long, mostly as the result of a writer's to enable the ships to act as a mini-Macross base for RPG characters to tool around in. Anyone can tell from the anime that the ships are absolutely gargantuan in size, at least ten times larger than what they say. I would not use the MII RPG books officially in any way!

As for the colonization fleets, the official stuff originally said that Macross 7 was composed of M7 herself and "seven city ships" (going along the "7" motif of the show). This number is stretched though depending on what you call a "city ship". We saw:

-City 7

-Riviera

-Hollywood

-Sunny Flower

-Beginhill

-Three Star

-Einstein

-Mark Twain

-Heaven

The Heaven cemetary ship doesn't really count, since it only shows up in the not-really-canon Macross 7 Trash manga. And I'm half-and-half on calling Mark Twain a "city ship", since it's comparatively tiny and seems to be used as a fancy cruise liner or party ship rather than a true colonization vessel.

Ship size is a different story. Even in SFDM the ship sizes changed especially during a daedulus attack hehe. But fleet size seems about accurate. I can't remember if they said how many ships appeared in orbit during the first two episodes of SDFM. Anyone?
