  1. He's a smidge taller than MP Prime, but much skinnier. I really want that Starscream, I'm just afraid of what I've heard concerning how fragile he is. A friend of mine, who owns plenty of Yamato Valkyiries and Gundam model kits, claimed he snapped all of the wing joints despite how careful he was. I still almost picked one up, but with Skywarp supposedly fixing most of those issues, I'll probably hold out to see if they release an improved Starscream.
  2. Lucky for me I'm only really interested in nabbing Alt Rumble and Ravage, and trying to decide on MP Starscream, or wait and see if they release a version with the Skywarp improvements (and nab Skywarp, too). Oh, and the KISS version of Rodimus. Shouldn't hurt the wallet too badly.
  3. I don't buy the idea that a good Macross show could not be be done without Kawamori. I didn't like MII myself, but I don't think that should be taken as a sign that any Macross done without the man can't be good. On the other hand, I personally don't think Kawamori has done a bad job. Zero could have used another full episode, that was really my only major complaint with that OVA. (Though wasn't SK also working on a couple other series at the same time?) Overall, I liked 7. It had flaws, but most of them seemed to come from the directing and the writing of the individual episodes. A tighter script and better direction could have made 7 every bit as good for those who prefere the Plus side of Macross as those who enjoy the Basara side, without significantly changing the story or the themes. Still, Kawamori is just one part of Macross. A significant part, sure, but not the only part. I think someone who respected a lot of Kawamori's ideas as far as design and theme, and shared an understanding of what most people liked about the DYRL and Plus side of the franchise, could put together a great show that most of us would enjoy. Moving back a bit, I'm not so certain that at this time a release of DYRL would make as big a splash as a release of Macross Zero in the west. The majority of anime fans seem to have an irrational aversion to older animation (I've met too many people who honestly believe an episode of Naruto has better animation than Akira, simply because it's newer). I've inflicted a lot of Macross on every anime fan I know, and all of them, without exception loved Zero. DYRL, sadly, did not go over nearly as well. You love DYRL, I love DYRL, but there's no accounting for taste. The flashbang of CG still has an ineffable allure to most people these days, even when it's not particularly good CG. Zero had pretty good CG, too, so even where I might prefer the hand drawn sequences from DYRL, it's the more contemporary dogfights in Zero that make the jaws drop.
  4. Hey! It could happen! Seriously though, mass shifting? Impossible based on our current level of technology, but who knows what the future might bring? Wasn't it Arthur C. Clark who said "any significantly advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"? Usually, it's more inconsistencies and an unwillingness to accept certain concepts that push people out of their suspension of disbelief. I can personally accept the mass shifting, but it's inconsistent use throughout the series puts me off. That's just bad storytelling. In other news, picked up MP Megatron. No orange cap, he came factory sealed. I suspected I might be able to pull that off by waiting for an anime convention. Absolutely adore the toy, however he does lack the diecast found in Prime. Much lighter, doesn't feel as sturdy. Easily the best Megatron toy I've ever seen, hands down. I almost nabbed Starscream, but I've heard so many things about how easily he breaks, and the new Skywarp with more diecast makes me wonder if an improved Starscream could be far off? I do want Starscream, I just don't want a fragile version that could break simply by transforming him. Unfortunately, the Dealer's Room at Anime Central this year was pretty lacking on robots and mecha other than Gundam (No YF-19s! The shame of it all!). I was hoping to see a KISS Rodimus. The Alternators version has the G1 chest flames, but I think the KISS toy just looks better. Also, doesn't appear as if the Alternators version will come with the fishing pole.
  5. If you honestly believe that, you've entirely missed the point. Maybe if you stick with the show long enough you'll figure it out, though.
  6. Me too. I'd honestly like to get all three seekers. My Transformers shelf is dominated by Autobots, because the Alternator's line is simply so Autobot heavy. Getting MP Megatron and all three seekers would be a great way to balance that out.
  7. I dunno, but that seems kinda too bad. Unlike the 360 "Core" system, the 20 Gig PS3 actually seemed like a worthwhile buy if you wanted to save a hundred bucks. From what I heard, people hadn't been buying them, though. I wonder how much of that was because of the 360 Core system giving any lesser system package a "gimped" stigma?
  8. I was going to get Diamond, but when I saw how few Diamond Preorders were left, and how many Pearl preorders were left, I decided it would be easier to get trades from Diamond. I must admit, I thought the cover for Diamond looked better, but really it will be basically the same game with only the usual differences.
  9. To those who have their MP Megatron, where did you order yours from, and did they come with the orange cap added to the front of the barrel?
  10. Owning all of the Art books, and a good number of Palladium's RPG books, I can vouch that other than the REF Field Guide, there's really not much in the way of good art, and almost no studio lineart in any of them. The image danth posted is representative of what you'd find in the Art books, and most of the RPG art is done by Palladium artists. Some of that seems to be traced or eyeballed from official lineart, but is not itself actual studio lineart. Again, the Field Guide being an exception. That said, I have not read through the linked thread, just this one, but I would not be opposed to a new Robotech Art book. If it turned out nice, I'd probably buy it. If it turned out crap, I'd simply pass. However not all of danth's arguments are without merit. This is unused Imai artwork we're talking about? Imai the model kit company? Tatsunoko, and therefor Harmony Gold, do not necessarily have the rights to use this artwork if it was created by Imai. If I draw a picture of Mickey Mouse, Disney does not automagically get the rights to use that. Rights are a bit more complicated than that.
  11. Picked up Super Paper Mario today, and with what I've played so far I'd recommend it. Fantastic new take on the platformer, and just a lot of fun. All of the subtle homages to old Mario games are a blast. The first stage had background music that sounded to me like a very odd mi of the first stage music from SMB, SMB3, and Super Mario World. Also picked up Cooking Mama for the Wii. Competitive mode is a lot of fun, and some things are definitely easier to do than in the DS game. Peeling vegetables is still a pain, though.
  12. Ack, managed to get the video but not the subtitle file!
  13. There's some big problems with this argument, as well as the popular description of the PS3 as the 'luxury car' of the console market. Rather, the same problem puts a big hole in both arguments. Software developers. A console cannot afford to be the "mercedes" of the videogame market. It does not work. When you buy a luxury car, you're buying the car, for the car, and the car maker makes a profit on the sale of that car. Sony is not pulling in a profit on PS3 sales. The way Sony has worked the market, pretty much since they entered it, is to sell the console for less than production cost, and then make up the money in software sales. A "mercedes" console can't do that for two reasons. First, there's already a limited market. You're not going to sell nearly as many games, because not nearly as many people will own the console to begin with. Second, the number of games being made will drop. Software developers want their games on consoles which are already popular, or they expect will become popular down the road. They might spread out a bit at the beginning of a console generation, but once a console shows a distinct lead, developers begin to concentrate on that console. If Sony waits to make their PS3 competitive, in the expectation of milking the PS2 until it dries up, they are sticking their head right into a noose. By the time they decide, "Well, now that PS2 sales are slacking, how about this PS3?" The Wii and the 360 will have all the developers in their respective camps, and the PS3 will be out in the cold.
  14. And it's already gone. Thanks for sharing, though I'm certain someone will point out that you're not supposed to do that on this forum. Still, given the rarity, I can't bring myself to fault you. I saw this show on VHS ages and ages ago, it's really a fantastic piece. I'd love to get ahold of it again sometime. You know, this reminds me of another really rare anime that I've not even heard of since seeing it at an anime con back in 99 or 2000. I believe it was titled 'Haleyluya II: Boy'. I recall it being pretty over the top hilarious.
  15. I believe Sega themselves have something to do with these rumours. I recall on Sega's Wii site, they had a poll on "Which games you'd most like to see on the Virtual Console?". Saturn games were in the lot. *edit* Should note, this is something I read elsewhere, not something I saw for myself.
  16. Ack, sorry I got the names mixed up. I meant Seeds.
  17. I'm kinda the opposite here. While I liked it from the start, it was how it evolved into pretty much the anime equivalent of Watchmen that really made it a hit with me. I'm one of the few people that loved the end of the tv series, and absolutely hate the movies which took the ending, and turned it into a more conventional action-fest.
  18. Ja. Nintendo keeps sending out shipments, but they always sell out quickly. When Wario Ware game out, there was a line in front of the local Target. Apparently the line had started 10p the previous night. Even more incredulous was learning that this was not an unusual event. People have been lining up for Wiis whenever a shipment is rumoured to have arrived. Man, I'm still just waiting for an estimated release date for 'No More Heroes', and news on whether or not Clover will be making Wii games.
  19. I wish I had an answer, but truthfully I'm not certain myself. The one friend I mentioned claims to hate specific things about the show, but few of the things he ever mentioned specifically are actually in GGG at all. The same friend apparently loves Herlock because he saw Arcadia of My Youth as a kid, but despises Galacy Express and Galactic Railways, pissing and moaning about 'trains in space'. He also couldn't wrap his head around the oversized tools GGG uses. That was like the one thing he ever mentioned that actually was in the show. I'm pretty certain he simply hates giant robot anime of any sort, and rather than simply saying that he sought to justify his dislike of GGG with other nonsensical complaints he came up with during his initial, drunk, viewing of the show. I need to see the old 80's Appleseed anime. I love the manga, but I must admit that I absolutely despise the recent all-CG Appleseed movie. Not for nostalgia, either, as I only finally read the entire Appleseed manga after having seen that movie.
  20. Angel's Egg is fantastic, if you can appreciate a very slow moving, surreal sort of film. It's concentrated Oshii, in the best possible way. Amano's artistic direction truly makes this film every bit as much, though. But yeah, I got to agree with Graham. Everyone has their own taste. Sometimes they fall into the mainstream, other times people find themselves practically alone with the anime of their choice, unable to find anyone who also appreciates even similar shows. I know in my particular circle of friends, I'm the only big Macross fan. In fact, most people I know have an outright dislike of Macross. Worse yet, Giant Robo, Tetsujin 28, Galaxy Express 999, Captain Herlock, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes I simply cannot watch with more than one or two friends. The only other person I know who also likes LotGH I married. Gao Gai Gar is by far the lease liked of my favourite shows. A couple of my friends outright refuse to be in the same vicinity if GGG is being shown. Angel's Egg is another of my favourites that I really can't share, since few I know even remotely like it. Even those that like other Oshii movies.
  21. Once again, I can only endorse Nintendo's noble cause of parting these fools from their money.
  22. Eh. The idea of the live action remake of the localized version, specifically, of a foreign show never sits well with me. I'm reminded of the Disney plan to make a 'Starblazers' movie that recast the USS Arizona in place of the Yamato.
  23. Er....? Do people actually rebuy consoles just to get a different colour? If so, I wholeheartedly respect and support Nintendo's efforts to part these fools from their cash.
  24. I've yet to see the Dawn remake, or 300, but are they really representative of the themes and style of Watchmen? From what I recall, Watchmen wasn't a thrill a minute action blockbuster. It was downright psychological in the way it set it's world, and picked apart its characters and themes. I know ages ago Terry Gilliam really wanted to try his hand at a Watchmen mini series. I would have loved to have seen that. I kinda hope that Rorshach pick is a mockup shot. It looks too artificial in the same way too many movies these days look. Like people are afraid to make anything look dirty or real in a movie anymore. Rorshach wasn't exactly known for his trendy new clothes. Not the sort of thing that will keep me from enjoying it if it's an otherwise good movie, of course, and more a statement on Hollywood as a whole than specific nitpicking. For this movie, I'm far more concerned with how they plan to cut the story down to fit the short attention span of the average American moviegoer.
  25. I never stated that the PD were mentioned before 7. I stated that the story given fits what we knew previously. In SDF we know about the Protoculture and the Supervision Army. The Zentradi being the army of the Protoculture. M7 gives fleshes out the role of the Supervision Army. We know that the SA was made up of mind controlled Zentradi and Protoculture citizens, and that it was the Protodevlin behind the SA forces. In that sense the PD are presented in a way that does not contradict previous information, and in fact expands upon it. In MII we have the Marduk. They are not referred to as the Protoculture or the SA. In fact, no mention of either is ever made at any point. Their role in the big scheme of things is never explained. They are a "new menace" that just happens to use redone versions of Zentradi ships and weapons, and controls a brainwashed Zentradi army.
