  1. I agree. I suspect very few fans would be swayed by whether or not Kawamori was involved, providing they liked what they saw.
  2. I really don't know that this thread needed resurrecting. Seriously.
  3. In short, Macross Plus came out before HG started throwing lawyers around and making absurd statements. Now that they are, it doesn't matter whether or not anything they claim is true, the threat of litigation is enough to make it not worth anyone's effort to license and release the show in North America.
  4. I'm not really a fan for various reasons. However, it does have its fans, and there are certainly things to appreciate about it, such as Mikimoto's designs.
  5. Right, which is why I stated that I agreed with the article, but could see where others would read it another way. One or two of the responses before mine seemed to be leaning in that direction.
  6. Actually, that part of both the Frontier and Macross II openings are directly related to the original SDF Macross opening.
  7. I've never been one for the "_______ raped my childhood!" crowd, but on the other hand....there are lots of absolute crap movies made from some very nice comics/anime/videogames/etcetera, and I can't really fault fans for being upset about that, or voicing their complaints. I'm mainly playing devil's advocate here, I generally agree with the article in the original post, but I can also see how some could read it as "shut up and deal", which is an attitude I have seen some people take when it comes to people griping about a crap movie. I don't hold with that view either. If everyone just accepts whatever crap is shoved down the pipe at them, then there's really no reason for anyone to make anything good.
  8. That "gun" also replaced the reason why the Emperor conspired with the Harkonnens against the Atriedes.
  9. That little fleet movement sequence also gives the impression that several fleets all launched in 2012 all at once, including the Macross 7 fleet. My take on it is, don't read too much into it, but it looked really neat.
  10. Oh, I completely agree about the Lynch movie. All I was saying is that those flaws were in no way intrinsic to the source material. I have to admit, I still enjoy watching the movie, though. The visual style is just fantastic. Now, if they could bring that level of visual quality to a production that does not deviate nearly so much from the books, and throw in a decent cast, you've got yourself a fantastic movie. Of course, in any new movie they're going to make all the cast members "Hollywood Pretty", and everything (not just the CG) will look entirely too clean and manicured. It's really a shame.
  11. Almost every time someone suggests that what makes a great book could never be done well in a movie I get mixed feelings. I can certainly see that being the case, the problem is every time it's been brought up I really can't agree. I could easily see someone making a great Dune movie, sure it won't be the same experience as reading the book, but it can be a great experience on its own without sacrificing the themes, ideas, and depth that make the book great. None of the major problems with the Lynch movie had to do with the source material, and in fact the biggest complaint many have was with where the movie nonsensically deviated from the source material. I can't really remember much about the miniseries, except that it had a painfully low-budget "Made for Sci-Fi Channel" look to it that I can't stand to sit through.
  12. Heh, that was brought up when the Deculture edition was released. The mark is noticeable in a few scenes.
  13. I really am not such a huge fan of the original movies to care, however everything about this remake reads like satire of the entire movie industry.
  14. I think my favourites would be, in no particular order; Fokker (double homage) Sleipnir or Intruder II
  15. Ack, I've got to run to work soon. So, looks like I'll have to wait until tomorrow. Hot damn, though, that New Macross battleship looks great from what little I can see. I loved Battle 7, but I'm certainly happy we're getting a new design.
  16. But, is that moment of realization necessarily the end-all, be all? Something that everyone needs to come to terms with? There is something to be said for making your enemy realize that you're not just a cardboard cut-out to be shot at, and Basara did go out of his way to make that connection. I hardly think his actions throughout M7 amount to Hikaru sitting in the park sulking. I'd say that goes for singing at street thugs, too. Personally, I think the point of Basara's ideals could have been presented in a much better, more thought-provoking way than the series wound up managing when the people in charge decided to package it in bright colours, with glowing lights and effects when people start singing. However, I really don't think that makes the idea so easy to dismiss. My major gripe with the show has always been its presentation. The ideals are respectable and well worth considering, just they were presented in such a cartoony way. I still enjoy the show, but can't help but feel that they could have presented the same core ideals in a much more convincing way, and wove it into a much more intriguing story. So much so, that I suspect Basara's personality and character could have been left pretty much entirely the same, and people may very well have come away with very different feelings about him.
  17. I'm not ignoring anything. You said; I pointed out that any similarity in their politics is superficial, I could say you ignored that point because afterwards you went right on to say they're both pacifists. You could say that they're both vocal and opinionated. I think I'd agree with that, but that's not really the same thing as having the same politics, and not really enough to draw a direct comparison between the two characters.
  18. But, it is superficial. Basara, other than criticizing the military now and then, is very different from Kaifun. He's not at all like an updated version of him for a new audience. He doesn't act anything like Minmay or Kaifun. Not one bit. The only two things that Kaifun and Basara have in common is that they're both labeled as "pacifists" (and there the label holds more true for Basara than for Kaifun) and that Kaifun is good in a fist fight, while Basara is a good pilot (and that comparison is kinda stretching). Their actions, their motivations, the way they deal with people, it's completely different. I'd say Basara is more similar to Minmay, and yes there are certain lines that can be drawn between the two. They're both musicians and one of the primary focal points in their respective shows. They both wind up being important to the military. I would not say that labeling Basara as "the Minmay of M7" is off base, though I question the "refusal to listen to reason and a less than one-to-one relationship with reality" comparisons. "Not exactly" is an understatement.
  19. I really don't see Basara as being as emotionally immature as Minmay. Socially immature? Sure. Emotionally? Not nearly to the extent of Minmay. Also, you're kinda delving into vague, broad-brush comparisons. You could say any number of Macross characters are like Kaifun with that reasoning. Basara as a character is very dedicated to his ideals, no matter how tough things get. Kaifun as a character was pretty much dedicated to himself, everything else could be compromised. As I said, there is a similarity, however it is very superficial. I really had little issue with Basara in M7, I think the show would have been just fine with him as-is, most of my problems with the show lay elsewhere.
  20. If you mean Kaifun's views on the military and violence I can kinda see where someone who didn't watch much of the series might get that impression but they're pretty dissimilar if you so much as scratch the surface.
  21. I finally managed to nab the game, too, and how sweet it is! I'm digging it. So far I even love the little in-between mission part-time job segments that most people seem to dislike. Forget Lucasarts, I think this game nailed the Lightsaber Game for the Wii category. By the way, any idea how well No More Heroes is selling in the west? I recall it bombed pretty hard in Japan.
  22. Ja, I still think it's entirely possible people are reading a bit much into sketchy translations. We'll see though. Shame April is still so far away, nothing to do but speculate until then.
  23. Just glancing at mine, no. I've kept mine out on a shelf, too, and transformed it every so often.
  24. Really a shame. Especially as it's really the sort of movie best seen the first time in a theatre, and it's actually a very enjoyable flick. Much better than Blair Witch, in both quality and presentation, though that really isn't saying much.
  25. I think he'd do as good or even a better job than Jackson. Jackson really messed up some potentially epic scenes by dumbing them down to Hollywood cheese. Scenes that ought to have carried over well to the big screen. On the other hand, I'd give At the Mountains of Madness priority. As great as the Hobbit is, I'm a bigger Lovecraft fan. I got the radio drama version of "At the Mountains of Madness" for Christmas. Best Christmas present I've gotten in ages, especially when I had no idea it existed.
