  1. Once. And i'm looking for more in-jokes. There's the obvious Isamu one. But has anyone seen any more?

The other obvious ones I've noticed are Sheryl shouted "Atashi no Uta o Kike!" ("Listen to my song!" using a feminine version of "my" as opposed to Basara's more masculine "Ore no Uta o Kike!")

Sheryl's concert itself is strangely reminiscent of Sharon Apple's.

Alto's VF-25 at the end posed exactly like Hikaru's from the end of SDF episode 2. It's even missing its left arm...I think.

    Ranka's pet/cell phone (???) seems to be a reference to Gubaba ( ^_^ ).

I thought of the ending credits of Dynamite also when they showed the street car...but we may be reaching. The city IS based on San Francisco (and Shibuya, of course...but the Shibuya 109 Bulding has been replaced with Shibuya 119, Lord knows why...), so street cars are something you'd expect to see. I just hope Macross F's Shibuya has a Hachiko statue.

And is it just me, or is the school shaped like the Macross with the main gun down...? That, or a Destroid Monster...

  2. Wasn't there a shot in Hikaru's training montage where he was piloting a 1A Brownie? I just figured his training period was uneventful and his skillz so mad that they jumped cut from trainee to squad leader.

Stragely enough, it wasn't a brown 1A, it was a brown 1J! Which I think is the only one to appear in the series...(am I right about that...?). Or maybe it was a YF-1R...

As far as the uniform color goes, I also did a few searches on google and found nothing.

But in thinking abut it, I can't find any way to make it make make sense...

White uniform, blue and red trim: Hikaru, and a few others seen in the show

White uniform, blue and yellow trim: Kakizaki, and some others.

White uniform, blue and green trim: no main characters, but many others.

White uniform, blue and purple trim: only Max AFAIK.

Gray uniform with blue and black trim: only Roy AFAIK.

(New recruit: "Oooh, can I have one with the purple on it?"

Guy in charge of handing out uniforms: "Sorry, you have to be a genius pilot with glasses to get that. It's in the rule book."

New recruit: "Wellll...how 'about the gray one then?"

Guy in charge of handing out uniforms: "That's a ceremonial uniform given out only to the man who all of our pilots want to be when they grow up. Sorry. How about this one with green trim? We found we could get a discount on those for ordering in bulk...")

Now, the bridge crew ALMOST makes sense...the Bridge Bunnies in powder blue with red trim, but if one of them leaves, their relief always has tan with red trim, just like the Pin Point Barrier Girls. So the color would seem to denote in which part of the ship you work. But what are we to make of Claudia's green uniform?

And then if you bring in Maistrov's darker blue with yellow...and the guy who shows up during the decision about taking the Zentradi defectors aboard, who has a dark red uniform with black trim...the list goes on and on, and a lot of uniforms are only seen once, which makes it impossible to figure out what they're for...

I say it's either the magic of anime, or else UN Spacy is a bureaucratical nightmare...

  3. I'm not the slightest bit optimistic about this...for a Watchmen movie to work, the dialogue will be crucial, and that's one thing that Hollywood no longer cares about, especially in big-budget movies. The characters are complex, the plot is complex, and there's a lot of necessary backstory that is revealed only in hints and references.

Cerebral, character-driven, and heavily reliant on subtlety and nuance...yeah, Hollywood's great at that...

  4. A 1/1 scale Asuka with removeable dress? Holy sh!t. Now I can see I have seen everything (well hear). It never ceases to amaze me how someone dreams this stuff up let alone it becomes marketable. Then again, we are talking the Japanese where they now introducing women robots and man pillows. With all that, how in the hell does the Japanese propagate?:ph34r: Sounds like they have been hitting the bong too hard.

They also had a 1/1 scale Rei...but I don't think you could take off her plugsuit. And many other characters I didn't recognize...

Seriously, the Akihabara Anime Center is one of the Gateways to the Abode of the Damned.

  5. Man, if there were english subtitles on that, I'd be soo all over it!

Oh, by the end of April you should have your pick of approximately 38,944 different fansubs of it...

I saw it three times at Sunshine Cinema in Ikebukuro last fall...on the big screen, with the kick-ass sound system, it was jaw-droppingly great. I'm dying for the next one.

  6. And what about Gundam ? Do you have lots of them too ?

They do. But they only have completed series, so if you're looking for Gundam 00 or a fansub of the first series, you'll have to wait awhile.

They also don't have anything liscenced by ADV or Funimation.

Just be careful...they recently implemented some new security that had has banned the IP addresses of a bunch of users (including me). They won't tell me why I was banned, but say I can go to the IRC to make a case for getting unbanned. I don't know anything about IRC, but that's apparently the only recourse, and no one I've talked to there has has been very helpful about getting the situation resolved.

Which is fine. They have a great service which they make freely available. They owe me nothing. But I like the site a lot, so the current situation is frustrating for me.

So yeah, I highly recommend the site. Just don't do whatever mysterious thing it is that I evidently did...<*/*sour grapes*>

  7. Oooh...get the Remaster boxes!

Actually, I don't think there's a good HK set out there...the subs are all variable and they either cut off the opening and endings, or the next episode previews, or the last few seconds each episode of D7. You're probably better off just downloading Central Anime's fansub.

  8. I know he's not tech. cannon fodder but... Kakizaki got blasted quick in DYRL right after he laughs at Hikaru, something like.... "'ah ha she told you....ahhhhhh" He didn't even get a chance ot do anything , didn't even fire a misle or the gunpod , he just dies..thats fodder'ish.

Kakizaki was ALWAYS cannon fodder, right from the moment he was introduced...he just needed to to...um...ripen or marinate or whatever cannon fodder does to get ready for that eventual big boom.

  9. I started rewatching all of Macross recently, and for soem reason, a short scene in SDF episode 10 really stuck with me. It's when the asteroid fragments are hitting the Macross and one of them kind of casually drops down and rolls over a poor little Destroid Defender...it's a quick scene, and it always made me kind of chuckle, but this time I was struck by how many silly, pathetic deaths await bystanders, Destroid pilots, and CF pilots throughout all the various chapters of Macross.

So, which one made you wince, or laugh, or just say, "Man, sucks to the THAT guy!"?

Give me your favorite cannon fodder deaths!

(My other faves: "Hikaru's infamous first kill," the guy in DYRL who gets decapitated, and the ship getting destroyed in Frontier...although I'm not sure that counts.)

  10. The only thing that I liked was Wendy Ryder from Macross II. Lousy personality if I recall from the show (long time since last viewing) but I did like her design by Haruhiko Mikimoto.

Like a lot people, I was pretty disappointed by MacII (I don't even like the VF-2SS), but the character designs were great, weren't they?

(Oh well, at least we KNOW it won't be a kiddie show...if Gilliam getting crushed wasn't proof enough.)

  12. Thanks for the heads up, though I think I'll just leave it untranslated. Have any idea what the "piikii" line on p54 means, I'd love to know  . And I'd also love know about that "smoke liking high places" idiom/proverb that Alto uses on p24.

Anyways I edited the translation to reflect the cut off parts on p35.

In the Shinsen sub version, they have a little note about the proverb being something like, "Smoke and idiots both rise."

Not entirely sure what it's supposed to mean, though...maybe when someone at work who you hate gets promoted over you or something...?

  13. Agreed mate. She does look creepy ....

Bah, it's not as creepy as the 1/1 scale Asuka Langley Sohryu (with REMOVEABLE DRESS!) I saw at the Akihabara Anime Center a few months back...which could be yours for a mere ¥330,000...

That said, I still think I'll pass on this one.

  14. I mean they could have had a scene where the zentradi find a human library, go to a museum, an art gallery, a church, or a scientific lab onboard the SDF-1 to learn more about the humans, but that's not as cool as a minmay doll or eating some exotic food at a restaurant which they've never experienced before. Younger audiences might have not been convinced that an alien would find that exciting compared to seeing a kung fu movie, a doll, music concert, getting drunk at a party, dancing, screwing a chic etc

Are you kidding? I'd LOVE to see the monthly Zentradi reading group as they struggle their way through Marcel Proust's seven-volume masterwork of high modernism, Á la recherche du temps perdu! Talk about drama...!

  15. I've only watched Frontier three times. Does that make me a bad fan?

I've watched the entire Macross Megaseries twice all the way through (once before Zero, once after), and I'm about to start going through it all again (if I watch two or three episodes or a movie per day, Frontier should have started by the time I finish...)

SDF Macross: twice raw, three times with the Animeigo set, and once with the ADV set. (and LOTS of watching those old Robotech Perfect Collection tapes, but of course they never finished that series.

DYRL: I first got a copied VHS tape of it in 1985...I've completely lost track of how many times I've watched it, but it's A LOT (i.e. well over thirty times). With subs? Maybe five or six times.

Flashback 2012: Again, I've had a tape since soon after it came out, and it gave me a nice, quick fix, so I watched it quite a bit at the time. Maybe fifty times? More?

MacII: I only watched one-third of it dubbed, but I've seen it subbed three times.

Mac+ OVA: Maybe ten to fifteen times. The movie: three or four times raw. Four times with subs.

Mac7: Twice raw, twice with subs. Ditto Encore, but the movie I saw maybe four times raw.

MacD7: Once raw (Part four was DAMN hard to track down!), twice with subs.

Mac0: I watched the first four parts again and again and again. But I've watched the whole thing five times.

And, like everyone else, I've watched bits and pieces here and there...

And right now, I think I'm just ging to sit back and watch Booby Trap...
