  1. "Responts" to Destroy All Podcasts DX or maybe he called up DAPDX. Either way he spent THREE HOURS dissecting our show about Macross. He even nitpicked the theme song.

Cool! A good respont is difficult to find these days, so if he has multiple responts, that's just amazing!

But yeah...I'm downloading it now, and will listen to it the next time I want to feel superior...

  2. I managed to find a subbed copy of You are (Not) Alone online and watched it yesterday... I thought it was fantastic and cannot wait for the next one when stuff starts actually changing... when does 2 come out?

When I was in Japan earlier this year, I met someone who did a little bit of work on the first movie, and he said that Gainax will be lucky if they get the second one out by Christmas. Now this info is definitely third- or fourth-hand, so you can take it or leave it...

Notable changes to the movie i noticed:

1.) Shinji doesn't remember what happened during the 3rd Angel Attack where he sees the EVA's true nature.

2.) When angels die, they explode and bleed....ALOT.

3.) The 4th angel's body disintegrated leaving only the tentacles instead of the whole body intact in the TV series.

4.) Shinji was training on a simulator on what looks like a cannibalised eva unit

5.) That Lilith-like being in central dogma might not be Lilith. The face mask is different

6.) Kaworu was on the moon and SEELE 01 was talking to him , something to do with a "pact". He mentions that he can't wait to meet the 3rd child, again. Hmmmmm.

7.) Another lilith-like being was on the moon.....and this time with the SEELE mask we are familiar with from the TV series.

8.) Shinji uses a gattling gun on the 4th angel and not the pallete rifle

9.) The positron sniper rifle and shield was completely redesigned, but everyone knows that already.

10.) The BGM Angel Attack and Step Into Terror were only used in 1 battle each. Probably not to repeat it again 3 times within the same movie.

5.) Misato said it's Lilith...now, she might be wrong, but the thing is...they don't think it's Adam.

6.) SEELE was saying that "The Promised Time is at hand."

7.) The 3rd, 4th, and 5th Angels have been reclassified in the movie as the 4th, 5th, and 6th. When Kaworu looks at the Lilith Moon Thing, he says, "The Third One hasn't changed." Now is that thing the Third Angel? Or was he talking about Shinji...? I guess we'll find out...

  3. I wouldn't recommend listening to the latest podcast. His devolves into outright misogyny and racism. According to him, Lynn Minmay isn't a real name and all girls are dumb battyes. Also Hikaru's name is Hikajew JoJo. Oh and did you know Russians can't be captains of battle fortresses because of the incident with the Russian submarine? Jeez.

Aganst my better judgment, I'm reviving this thread, because I just listened to the episode that VF5SS mentioned...Wow.

I would go into specifics of exactly why it's thoughtless to say that they changed Hikaru's name to Rick Hunter because "Hikaru Ichijo" is lame and stupid; why it's mindless to say that every macross story has the same plot: guy who flies a jet likes a girl he's never going to have, and someone sings a crappy song at the end (Is "Voices" really worse than "Stage Fright"? And since when did Basara like girls, anyway?); why it's brainless to say that the Robotech live-action movie needs to be made for the political realities of TODAY, so a Russian captain wouldn't be realistic (and apparently it's also advisable to remove the Chinese girl, because, y'know, it's not like China has any influence now or anything); and why it's just foolish to attack Macross fans for starting "Who would win: Aplafighter or YF-21" threads when HE HIMSELF started a "Who would win: Robotech Masters or anyone else in all of SF" thread at RT.com (You'll never guess what his answer was).

But really, dougbendo (and you can look 'im up on myspace!) isn't worth a reasonable response, so I'll just quote a great 20th century philosopher:

"What a maroon! What an ignoranimus!"

(By the way, he said he was INVITED to Macrossworld some time ago to "write forums" or something...can anyone confirm or deny this?)

  4. Was Gilliam really cannon fodder though? Thats the main reason why he was left out but he can be included in Volume 3.

    Taksraven

In my opinion, yes. But I even think Kakizaki was cannon fodder, and he survived for a not-inconsiderable amount of time. Granted, the guy who gets the contents of his contents of his skull spattered all over the canopy of his VF-0 is way more connon fodder-y than either Kakizaki or Gilliam, but I think the two of them still qualify.

  5. My problem with Macross 7 isn't "comedy," it's more a lack of seriousness in the story (similar, but different). I also think the story could have been tightened up a bit. With a somewhat darker tone, 7 would have been a brilliant 26- to 39-episode series.

But remaking it...? I think the ship has sailed on that one. Besides, quite a number of people love it as is. For me, it's not my favorite Macross, but it's not my least favorite, either.

Besides, from all indications, the reamake exists in the form of MacF.

And finally, since Agent 1 is no longer here to bait Keith and get this thread locked, someone has to pick up the slack, so I guess I'll have to be the one to say it...

    "Assless chaps."

    That is all.

  6. Noooooooooo!!! Now I have to buy a new version of this kit just for the new boxart. :o

It's about damn time! I have one of the original kits that I got from Valkryie Exchange years ago, and I never built it because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find another.

So, they've rereleased the Elintseeker, the Minmay Guard, the VF-1D...dare we hope for the Ravens version of the VF-19 and the F-14 Tomcat...?

EDIT: I wish it came with a little Minmay to put in the back seat...but I guess you'd have to riddle the thing with bullet holes and tear off one of the arms to make that historically accurate...

  7. I'll admit, most of the official Valkyrie names in Macross have been really uninspired. I think "Nightmare" is about the only name in Macross that hasn't been used that much in other media but naming a black fighter nightmare isn't particularly creative either. Naming conventions are definitely not one of the things I like about the franchise. The naming scheme pretty much just follows real world conventional fighter designations, a naming convention which has itself long since run out of names (See re-use of "Lightning" for the F-35). Plus, nearly every fictional franchise has already used all these names over and over again (Gundam, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Star Wars, Battletech, et cetera). And I mean, there's only so many bird names one can use and all have them have been used and beaten to death.

I kinda like Chimera as someone suggested or Gorgon, but they sound almost too fantasy-like in a way.

Also, perhaps names like Zealot, Eclipse, Reaver might work.

Something that also implies transformation while sounding like sci-fi such as Parallax (a change in angular position)

Maybe even have a little fun, like Xenophobe :) (okay, maybe not, but you have to admit it's kinda appropriate)

I'd welcome a move away from the naming schemes of typical military convention. However, to really work for me they'd likely have to go beyond one word names or at least choose something other than conventional titles, mythology or nostalgic words. Perhaps VF-25 Star Wind or something like that would work.

Good point about the fighter names...if we're going with US fighter names, then I would submit "Tigershark," since it's my favorite neglected warplane. (And yes, I'm a BIG Area 88 fan, which is why it's my favorite.)

  8. All all the names suggested so far, I think Gubaba's suggestion of VF-25 "Seraph" is the most fitting.

    My suggestions.

    VF-25 Hellbringer.

    VF-25 Armageddon.

    Graham

    Thank you!

I like it too. I would also try the full spelling of it Seraphim or one of the other Christian angelic hierarchy like Cherubim, Ophanim, or Dominion to keep with the theme.

    ...but Seraphim is plural...

Still, you trump me. I don't know what the Ophanim are.

  9. Keeping with the Norse theme:

    VF-25 Wälsung

    VF-25 Brünhilde (maybe not...)

    Keeping with Hindu theme:

    VF-25 Vajrayudha

    VF-25 Indra

    VF-25 Shakti

    VF-25 Kalki

Or maybe a different tack is needed:

    VF-25 Seiko

    VF-25 Momoe

    VF-25 Gomaki

    VF-25 Ayu

    Vf-25 Mari ( ^_^ )

    Or my personal favorite:

    VF-25 Seraph

  10. Do you have by any chance Central Anime's and/or PsychoKORps' fansubs in .SRT or similar format? IIRC, Central Anime's release was hard subbed and its picture quality is noticeably inferior to some newer releases encoded in x264 that are floating around now.

No, I don't...but I noticed on datorrents the other day that some group called VIP is putting Central Anime's subs on H264 MKVs of the new remaster.

  11. If I were a big Hollywood executive, I'd probably go to the Hory Froating Head himself and say, "You've got a Hollywood blockbuster budget, you've got the best CGI and special effects people in the business, you've got the final say on everything, and you're retelling Space War I in a two-and-a-half to three-hour movie. Go to town."

Then I might respectfully suggest that he use DYRL as a basis, but shorten the scenes of Hikaru and Misa wandering around on Earth.

Also, depending on who they cast as Minmay, I might insist that the shower scene stays.

And then, if it's successful, I'd REALLY throw a ton of money at him and say, "You've got an even BIGGER budget, MORE special effects people, and final say on everything, and we're all DYING to know what happened to the Megaroad-01."

  12. I know this actually airs in Japan in April '08, but I've seen scenes on YouTube, etc. Is this 1st episode available on import/pirated DVD, etc. so I can get a copy? Anyone know? I dunno how to do any of that bit torrent stuff to view on my computer. I can't find any anime DVD site on the internet that is actually selling the DVD yet. Just makes me wonder how it got on YouTube.

Again, it's all here, availabe for direct download, all the information, everything:

    http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=24559

But, to answer your question, the pilot episode aired on TV in Japan on December 23.

  13. You know what's sad? I just started dating a girl in her very early 20s and she would have no idea about any of those things. So sad...

I don't know if there really is clamor for this but it has all the right stuff in it to still be a fun movie... but it'll probably just get raped instead.

Funnily enough, one of the biggest Devo fans I know is a 22-year-old woman...but she's a fan of A LOT of '80s music.

And yeah...it could be fun, but really, do we need YET ANOTHER sequel or remake??? (Of course, I'm completely stoked about Macross F...so yeah, I'm a big hypocrite.)

  14. I'm with Bsu Legato...is there a clamor for this?

Granted I only saw the movie once, as a kid, when my Mom took me to a double feature of The Last Starfighter and Footloose, merely to escape the summer heat, and I remember next to nothing about either movie.

...Now that I think about it, that experience is one of the most quintessentially '80s thing in my memory. Double feature...Footloose...the Last Starfighter...if Devo had shown up randomly with Max Headroom, it would have been PERFECT...

  15. C'mon, has to be that way for the American ADD Starbucks crowd. Nuance and subtlety would do well in European and Eastern markets, but not so much in the US. This will most likely be a PG-13 story tied to an action figure line, replete with inane one-liners, explosions, too-pretty to be real 20-somethings, and a reimagined storyline to "fit" with the modern world..i.e. the usual thoughtless drek targeting the teen demographic. I hope I'm wrong and the director chooses to make it in the same vein as 300 and Sin City, very true to the original graphic novels.

I think the problem is that - dare I say it? Yes, I shall - while you can argue that Sin City and 300 (I'm talking about the comics here, I haven't seen the movies) are just as good or better than Watchmen, I think no one can deny that Watchmen is MUCH, MUCH more complicated. Frank Miller is a very cinematic artist and writer, Alan Moore isn't.

The fact that Hollywood keeps thinking he is (and that goes back to Return of the Swamp Thing) just shows me that there are a lot of people in Hollywood who really have no idea what they're doing.

Now, if they wanted to make a D.R. and Quinch movie, THAT could be awesome...
