  1. It may be unfair to Hummingbird, but let's face it...that live performance was terrible. I'm not sure what was worst...the guitar riffs being taken over by a cheesy synth, the pelvic thrusts during the guitar solo, or Tomo Sakurai looking about as sexy as warm taffy.

Now if they had had Basara and Mylene's singing VAs doing the show, with a REAL band, that would've been a lot more fun...

  2. Well...they aren't really giving us anything new, but they DID discontinue the original Super and Strike Valks, so they're letting the kit remain available, just in a different package.

I thought they only discontinued the first three non-FAST Valkyries. The Super and Strike Valks are still being produced.

I'm not too worried about it. These will come around again eventually.

I'm more worried about not ever getting a VF-11, or VF-0D

According to the Hasegawa website, they've stopped production on the Super and Strike Valks as well as the regular ones...so get 'em while you can.

And I think we can pretty much bet on a VF-0D...they have the head and the cockpit in the VF-0B, they only need to make the wings. However, I agree with you on the VF-11...I REALLY want one of those...

EDIT: Whoa...you're right...it doesn't come with a J head...okay, I take back what I said, that's frickin' annoying. Worse than the VF-1S Strike Battroid being the only place to get Hikaru type VF-1A Super Battroid decals, and just as bad as the VF-1D being a limited edition...

  3. I love Hasegawa and their Macross kits kick ass, but I'm disappointed by this attempt to repackage something but not give us anything more substantive. <_<

Well...they aren't really giving us anything new, but they DID discontinue the original Super and Strike Valks, so they're letting the kit remain available, just in a different package. Consider it a consolodation (selling one kit instead of two) rather than a new product.

I wish they'd do the same with the original non-FAST Pack Valks...I'm a-gonna miss those when they're gone...

  4. Mari. before she became a hottie.

Bah, she was a hottie then, too. I have this old Macross book that I got in '86 or thereabouts that has a lot of rough designs for the show, and A LOT of photos of Mari. I think the book came out in '83, and she says in it that she just turned twenty.

At any rate, I fell for her in a big way because of that book.

Of course, I was also a hormonal teenager back then, so I was falling hard for almost anyone in a skirt and/or tight jeans...

EDIT: I mentioned this in a nother thread, but I might as well say it here, as well: Mari's going to be performing again at Genghis Cohen in Hollywood on August 13.

  5. I was wondering if the Fire bomber band with the voices from Macross seven has ever toured the U.S.?I'd love to see them play.No one answered my question about Mara Ijima touring the U.S. in the other topic.

I think that Fire Bomber as a touring act is long over and done with...although, judging from the performance on the Macross 7 bonus stuff, I'm not sure that that's a bad thing.

As for Mari, she's performing at Okaton in Atlanta (sorry, I don't know the dates), and again at Geghis Cohen in Hollywood on August 13.

    Her website is http://www.marimusic.com

  6. Well...yes and no. Some of the animation was very nice (although not as good as Evangelion, which debuted a year later),

But Evangelion had half the number of episodes on a equivalent budget. More time could be spent per episode and numerous other factors. If you must compare M7 to something, try Gundam. Same size with about the same size budget.

Point well taken. And M7 holds up pretty well when compared to, say, V Gundam. And I liked some of the animation loops...the VF-11 transformation was pretty good for cannon fodder (although not as nice as one from SDF with the battroid going through an explosion and coming out a gerwalk).

And I just watched Dynamite 7 again last night, and was once again impressed with the animation there. Beautiful stuff.

  7. Don't confuse re-used animation (something no anime series at the time wasn't guilty of) with bad animation. Macross 7 re-used launch & explosion scenes, something that's all too common, and as such you can hardly blame them for. How many ways can you re-animate something launching or exploding? When it comes to actual character detail however, Macross 7 stands up exceptionally well with its peers. Very consistent detail & character, mecha & BG art.

Well...yes and no. Some of the animation was very nice (although not as good as Evangelion, which debuted a year later), but the one thing that always galled me about M7 is that the animators have NO idea how to show someone playing a guitar convincingly. I mean, it's a small thing, but I get tired of Basara only playing one chord for an entire song...

  8. Did she really say "f***ing" in front of the audience? :o

Yep, she did. But she sounded so cute that it was hard to take any offense.

And now I'm definitely kicking myself for not taking any pics...although Mari signed my CD.

  9. Wasurekaketeru energy...

    Now hurry up!

    Tori modosouze!

I have to agree with the majority about the first twelve episodes. My interet didn't really peak until Millia got into her old Valkryie and starting lecturing Basara on how to fly.

  10. At the AX panel they definitely said that could release DYRL domestically as part of the "merchandising rights." They aslo said that Tatsunoko were co-producers of the movie, which is why the deal covered DYRL as well.

What was weird about it was that it was completely an afterthought...it wasn't part of their presentation; they only addressed the issue because someone asked at the Q&A.

And of course, no word on when the DVD would actually come out...

I could've asked, but I was carrying three bags of Hasegawa models, and I was afraid someone from HG would confiscate them if they knew...

  11. Argh! You guys are so lucky in the US. :p

I suppose you didn't get Reba West's autograph... or don't dare to admit that here... haha...

No, I didn't get the Divine Miss West's autograph, although I probably should've...It would've been interesting to get a photo of them together as well. Missed opportunities, I suppose.

As for the special occasion, I think it was just because Mari's new CD is coming out on Tuesday, although she had a box of advance copies with her. Put it up if you get the chance (and if you like adult contemporary), it's excellent.

And yes, Reba and her husband knew EXACTLY who they were seeing. The fact that they were there with a guy from C/FO proves that...

At any rate, I hope she plays out more often.

On another note, I'm glad Macrossworld is here...I don't know anyone else who would appreciate the weirdness. Thanks guys!

  12. I saw Mari Iijima perform at the Genghis Cohen Cantina last night. I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I certainly wasn't expecting the show to be anywhere near as good as it was. She did an excellent version of "Desperado," believe it or not, as well as other songs spanning her career.

Before doing a song from her first album, she told a funny story about having a crush on Ryuichi Sakamoto when he was producing her first album (apparently, he wouldn't even kiss her cheek, although later, when she ran into him in a coffee shop, he insited that she sit in his lap, which made her boyfriend pretty upset).

Towards the end of the set, she said, "I think I've made my peace with Macross," and asked how many people there were anime fans. Quite a few hands shot up, and she said, "See? On the one hand, it's nice. On the other, I've made twenty f***ing albums, but it's Macross everyone remembers!" She said she'd been trying to figure out what do for Macross, and had practiced "0-G Love," but finally decided on something else. Then she launched into "Do You Remember Love," which was awesome.

At the encore, she said she didn't know what to play. Someone shouted out for "My Boyfriend's a Pilot," to which she said, "Wow, that one is REALLY an anime song..." I shouted out for "Tenshi no Engoku," which she then played.

At any rate, it was a great show, and her new CD, "Gems" (a kinda sorta greatest hits), is really, really good.

The bizarre part of the evening involved the couple in front of me. The man worked for Star Trek, and was talking about it before the show. He also called his wife "Reba," which got me wondering. After the show, after getting a signed CD from Mari, I talked to them a bit, and the man said, "You know, my wife here played Minmay in America," so I found myself chatting with Reba West...

She was also very nice, and I felt comfortable enough to say that I thought Mari had had better songs to work with, and she agreed.

    So yeah...interesting night...

  13. Very nice!

You can still get the normal Strike version for a lot less, and it also comes with both missile pods, and the VF-1A head I believe.

Not really sure what the difference is? Both kits only permit you to make (1) valkyrie if I remember correctly.

I wonder if the only change to the decals will be the inclusion of all (4) Skull Squadron variants. The normal Strike comes with Roy, Hikaru and Max, and the normal Super comes with Hikaru, Max and Hayao.

Yes, it comes with decals for all four versions.

Now I just hope that they'll re-release the non-FAST Pack VF-1 in some form...nothing kills my model-making joy like the thought that if I mess this one up, I can't replace it...

  14. Well, the two Minmay Guard designs have touring information on them, so I assume that they're meant to be, um, guarding Minmay as she travels from show to show.

The REALLY odd part, though, is that the tour dates are for 2013 (in Paris, I believe) and 2014 (on the Moon)...Minmay would be off on the Megaroad at that point...

  15. Well...the problem seems to be that in the original series, the gunpods generally don't say U.N. Spacy at all. In Mac0, all of them have the words right side up on the left side and upside down on the right side (in fighter mode).

I figure this is now the official way to do it, so I've been using it for all my VF-1s, as well.

  16. I'm siding with justvinnie and Keith on this one...only seven Protodeviln were ever released in this universe, and all of them are still sealed on Varauta at the time of M0.

My best guess is, as others have said, that the AFOS is some kind of Protoculture mecha...but I'm still wondering (as is everyone, I guess) about the blood forming Roy Waka...especially since the AFOS itself started bleeding at the end of episode 2...

  17. I've gone from desperately WANTING to like M7 to genuinely having affection for it, and it only took me seven years!

I still don't like it as much as the original (I think it would have been improved by cutting it down by about 13 episodes, and by treating the Protodeviln more seriously...especially Zomd and Goram), but I think it has some interesting twists on the original plot.
