  2. That was a nice figure, and I own it, but as already been mentioned it's no Revoltech. The Kaiyodo figure was very limited in posability and couldn't pull off many of the anime/game poses that are just iconic Beyond the Grave...
  3. My god... they need to get Beyond the Grave into that lineup pronto!
  4. From what design material I remember the bow is purely ceremonial and was ever only used during that one time. I guess when you can afford to plate an entire MH in pure gold, a gold ceremonial bow used only once isn't too much of a problem It would be awfully nice if FSS MHs could be released as some sort of poseable toy instead of endless static display kits, but Nagano designs them so slender and top heavy it would be hard to pull off gracefully. The Jagd Mirage alone would tower over an adult and probably need real functional anti-grav boosters to stay standing...
  5. No idea... since I usually buy the Chinese translations
  6. For a few seconds there I thought I was watching the trailer for the latest Makoto Shinkai movie
  7. Sigh... there was a time when I actually knew all of this, but the three-year gap between releases had made it difficult to have any sort of continuity in what I read. I think FSS 13 is due out 2011, barring any accidents. I REALLY hope Nagano can finish the series.
  8. Not surprising. Taiwanese have very little in terms of long term cultural memory. Also, anime and manga that sell well in the US and Japan don't necessarily carry well in Taiwan. I can run through a loooong list of anime starting from the 90s that have seen only a limited release in Taiwan.
  9. 10 huh.. depends on how precocious he is, lol. Definitely El Hazard and Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Tenchi Muyo OVA... the original harem anime, lol. Miyazaki's Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away) is great, and also teaches some great values without going all out like Mononoke Hime. I would actually recommend Castle in the Sky... I watched it when I was barely 7 myself. Nausicca works as well, but I found it confusing as a kid... Azumanga Daioh is a slice of life Japanese high school anime. Funny as heck if you get the humor, and quite short. Personally I also recommend Hajime no Ippo, boxing anime extraordinaire. For you and the missus, I'd also suggest Ergo Proxy for a mental workout in pseudo-philosophy.
  10. Most of what I'm suggesting you've probably seen, but I'll throw it out all the same: The Full Metal Panic series. Hilarious humor, transforming super robots, cute schoolgirls, AND a love triangle. Fumoffu for over the top humor. FMP and Second Raid for more super robots. Detonator Orgun. I, and many others I believe, consider this to be one of the best anime from the early 90s. It's also short, a 3-ep OVA. El Hazard: The Magnificent World OVA (NOT the TV series!). This is my favorite anime from the late 90s. High quality animation sci-fi-ish/fantasy love story. I don't know an anime lover who wasn't touched in the last few seconds of the last ep. Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA. I liked it better than the TV series, that and the Soyokaze gets a terrific send-off.
  11. RD-RAM. I bought into it, and for a time had a wonderfully stable system that kept up performance with newer machines. Then the industry decided to conspire against Rambus and the whole thing died. No matter what you feel about Rambus, if Samsung and their ilk hadn't conspired to price RD-RAM out of the market, the technology itself was very sound. I also bought into MD players, but for me it's not a piece of technology that went nowhere. It only went nowhere in the US. I used my Sharp MD player for damn near a decade, and even recorded many a lecture on it.
  12. Sad part about the whole HG/Merchwarrior thing is that the games industry is taking this lying down...
  13. Somebody should tell Catalyst then, cause: http://battletech.catalystgamelabs.com/200...e-want-them-to/ They're not fighting it at all.
  14. Looking at the Dimension Diver stuff reminded me... why hasn't Kaiyado done a Revoltech GGG...
  15. From a purely culinary standpoint... generally you want to use rice that's been in the fridge overnight and had a chance to dehydrate a bit for any sort of fried rice dish, gives it a more fluffy texture...
  16. I won't be able to watch this without thinking of the Fully Monty, lol...
  17. There's a disconnect here from the usual smart and witty writing of Suzumiya Haruhi... I guess this is what happens when you go off the reserve and create your own content.
  18. Cross of Iron? Stalingrad? Thin Red Line? Flags of Our Fathers? Letters from Iwo Jima? Das Boot?
  19. I guess I'm the only one that thought "HQ, this is Alpha assault..." when I saw that trailer huh... it's basically an updated version of the MW2 intro... and that's a GOOD thing.
  20. Yeah... Oshii's films are love it or hate it, coupled with the hit or miss factor...
  21. Just to provide a counterpoint. There is significance behind the newspaper folding. It's not 2 minutes, he only takes less than a minute to fold the newspaper, but he folds it in a very specific way. The enemy has an ace pilot that you never see, yes. However, if you sit down and think about everything they talk about in the movie, then it becomes very obvious WHY you don't need to know anything about him, because Heck, just look at that very last dogfight, Kannami Those are the only two scenes in the whole movie served up on slow mo... that's already a big enough hint. Yes, the bowling scene is slow... but I think it's very symbolic of how Kannami and Kusanagi don't have much to look forward to in life, living life without a spark so to speak, whereas Tokino is more of a live-in-the-here-and-now type. So while some people wouldn't waste money on the DVD, I would actually spend the money to get a blu-ray of this. EDIT: So I'm a loser and went back to watch the bowling scene. Kannami has the skill and performs well, but has nothing really to live for. Kusanagi has simply stopped caring and hence doesn't even get a strike. Tokino is still full of youthful exuberance, gets a strike, and is overjoyed by it.
  22. Cicadas, and they're one of the things that symbolizes a hot summer season in the Asia Pacific islands. Not so much a jab at Eva, although that could be it too, but more portraying a regular summer season. Railroad tracks and all that also... you could even say they're referencing a lot of Byosuku 5cm with the railroads, but commuter railroad crossings are another one of those slice of life things.
  23. Finally had a chance to see this. Oshii has toned down a bit, but I think instead he's gone with even more silence... not that that's bad, since I actually like the way the movie is set up. The dogfights were pretty good. I don't think they needed to be drawn out affairs. The last dogfight was the best and had the most impact. After watching it a few times and thinking about it a bit, it makes sense why
  24. I'm still waiting for Ace Combat 6 to come to PS3...
  25. Figures... just look at what Double Helix did to Silent Hill...
