Has Anime-in-Action quit creating digisubs of Macross 7? It has been a long while since the sixth episode was released.

I haven't been following their releases closely since I've gotten up to episode 34 from another group, but I don't believe they've been releasing them on a regular schedule so a big gap between releases isn't that out of the ordinary.

On the issue of copyrights, who would Madman have to buy licenses from to release Macross in Australia? Studio Nu or HG?

Because it was licensed from HG and they own the distribution rights to Macross outside of Japan.

Another question, does these DVDs have dubs? If so, are they the exact same "robotech dubs" or are they a whole different dubbing?

These are exactly the same thing as the R1 Animeigo set, just on six disks instead of nine and in the PAL format instead of NTSC.

Original Series, by a mile. Trek has gotten progressively worse with every new series made (and don't even start on the movies, ugh).

I'd really rather forget that Trek after DS9 series 3 actually exists.

You really need both to get the full experience, but if you have to pick one, chose the OVAs.

While the movie has a better ending (much better) the OVA is better in most other regards.

Excellent. Still ongoing.

The movie had originally been shot in the aspect ratio of 2.35 to 1.  My original VHS version had this ratio as well.  I don't know about the first DVD release.  This current DVD release has an aspect ration of 1.85 to 1.  After having watched this movie in its original aspect ratio for so long, all I can say is that this new version just seems wrong to my eyes.

A second glitch, and this is a very curious one.  The subtitles for the translated Klingon speech is located in an area of the screen that suggests they were originally coded for a 2.35 to 1 picture.  The result is that, because of the aspect ratio of 1.85 to 1, the subs are now too high on the screen, very close to the middle of the image.

This is not a glitch. The film was shot on 35mm, which is a square frame allowing the director to crop it to his preferred ratio.

Previously, ST6 was released on the big screen at the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, but for this release and the previous dvd release, the director chose to format it in the 2.0:1 (not 1.85:1) aspect ratio.

Since the Klingon subtitles were hard matted into the original film source, opening the print to 2.0:1 makes them appear higher in the picture.

I personally didn't like the image flashes during the Spock/Valeris interrogation. It kind of broke up the scene instead of having it flow properly.

Maybe this is just a rights issue (like we haven't had enough of those) Perhaps Manga gets their name involved simply becasue they hold the licence to the "Ghost in the Shell" name, but the actual work is being performaed by Bandai.

I'd say it's more likely that since the GITS movie was such a huge property for them, Manga would have jumped at the chance to be involved with the production.

As example i have Macross Plus Ova and movie from Mangle and R2 from Bandai, quality of transfer is SAME, this mean source for this was ONE telecine transfer.

Manga Macross Plus movie release is comparable to the R2 release?

This isn't really that surprising - Manga are actually listed in the end credits of season 2.

3. They are to good for the public

A lot of them just come down to their not being enough market to make their release viable.

Newer modern anime is the main focus of the market, with older 'classic' anime being a smaller niche where you can only release a certain amount of material that fits certain guidelines.

For example, I'd love to be able to buy the Mazinger Z series on dvd, but I just can't see it happening any time in the forseeable future. A company would have to buy the resources and masters for 92 episodes (as a minimum, not including any extras), spend the time money translating and possibly remastering if its a series with deteriated master sources.

Given that, how exactly then would they turn a good profit on a very old series with obsolete animation that would take around 20 dvds to release? The length makes it impractical to sell on shelves, and the age removes the vast majority of the anime fanbase from being even potential customers.

I don't doubt it will happen one day, but there are plenty of understandable reasons for whatever anime not to be available.

If you pick up this month's issue of Newtype USA, you'll see just how bad the English dub of Azumanga Daioh is. Luci Christian (Kaname in Full Metal Panic!, Nako in Steel Angel Kurumi 2) does an unconvincing job as the voice of Yukari-sensei. Jessica Boone's (Misaki in Angelic Layer) does an even worse job as Chiyo than expected.

So, did Newtype have some different kind of preview? Because the Chiyo/Yukari trailer that's online gives exactly the opposite impression of your opinion.

amd panon, you buy the dvd's and let us know how it comes out, me, I'll download the perfect animeone and lmf fansubs with near perfect picture quality that ony an anal retard would notice any imperfections on his hdtv...

There's nothing wrong with downloading fansubs, since unlike bootlegs they don't directly hurt the anime industry and give money to criminal organisations in HK.

Anyways, sorry again if I pissed some of you off but I just wanted to get my thoughts out there and find out if anyone else feels the same way.  By the way, I am not judging the Macross TV series, just DYRL.  You'll have to let me know if the TV series is better than DYRL or different, etc.

Nothing wrong with that. I personally find it one of the weakest parts of Macross.

It looks wonderful and.. well, that's it's strongest point. I've always found it a pretty weak compressed and simplified revisioning of the original series, changed for the worse.

Really, it's an excuse to see our favourite old characters and valkyries given a second life with terrific high budget animation. Beyond that.. meh.

The movie and series are unrelated, as the series is an alternate universe to the originals.

The TV series is much, much better than the movie ever was, IMO.

The first episode is a much better first episode than S1E1 (which overall was one of the weakest of the entire series), slick animation and the slight tweaking they've done with the character designs is quite nice.

Most importantly, it didn't have wretched CG intro credits like the first season.

It seems that they've also changed the intro music.

That Get9 song is actually a new intro song for S1, which is replaying on TV in Japan. The song is absolutely terrible. Whoever decided that should be a GITS intro should be shot.

Don't waste your money on bootlegs.

The files you've downloaded are of significantly better quality.

hmm I am curious... the only Gundam series I have seen are the Original, Gundam Wing, and G-Gundam.  I'm not personally really into gundam and never visited the site.  But out of the 3 I have seen I liked Wing, Gundam was OK, and G-Gundam.... not gonna go there.  Besides the fact that apparently Wing sounded like it had a fad going is there a reason why everytime it gets mentioned other gundam fans bash it to death?

It was considerably popular despite being considered (among older fans at least) among the weakest entries in the series. That popularity was magnified by it being the Gundam series that gained popularity outside Japan the most obviously, so you have a great deal of people who only know of it and not the older series.

It's also usually latched onto by the UC elitists as a reason why the alternate universes suck, despite Wing being the only bad one.

I remember someone was going to do a fansub of it, but now I can't remember which MW member was doing it.

Shame it doesn't seem to have materialised, this is a show I'd like to see some day.

My opinion. I am enjoying M0 and I think the CG in it is far better than what I thought (in my worst nightmares). BUT, confronted to, say, Macross Plus (which is the highest achievement in hand-made animation ever accomplished by the macross franchise along with DYRL), the 'magic' is just not there. I like to watch animation (in general) and wonder 'wow, they did THAT!" like a child. Marvel, that's the word. Well, I don't get that feeling watching M0 Valks, although I must admit that, for a CG show, it's quite impressive, or better, the best CG animation I've seen so far, even with its many faults.

I can't complain about the detail in the CG beacuse it is very high quality. However, I really wished they'd slow things down a bit. It's like they made crappy low frame CG animation then sped it up to look more fluid. Half the time, I can't figure out what exactly is going on. I say, if you can't make animation on par with pixar (don't even speak to me about Gonzo), then you shouldn't even be trying.

see, thats the thing, yukikaze has super high and smooth frame rates, and the models are absolute eye candy.

For everything there's a price. Yukikaze's is that the detail is MUCH lower, and the entire show in general doesn't look anywhere as good as M0's art does.

And don't even give me the its to kiddie stuff. MSG, G,Wing, X, SEED were all more kiddie, and thats only talking about the first 14ish eps. After those it goes back to the mass darkness of Z.

None of those shows you listed ever get even remotely as juvenile as ZZ, ever. That ZZ was a direct sequel to arguably the best entry in the series only makes it worse.

Why can't they just bring out Zeta 1st then Double-Z, and then get Seed out towards the end of the year.

Gundam Seed is not that good.

Three reasons.

SEED is good, and a proven success with the Japanese fans (and online).

Zeta could not achieve the mainstream success SEED has the potential to achieve, so it's release has been scaled back.

Double-Z? Almost the worst crap in the Gundam franchise. I hope it's the last thing we see brought over.

I watched the first one, and it doesn't seem as unwatchably bad as the previous Japanese Transformers cartoons have been but - the Japanese just seem to have no concept of making a transformer that looks good. All the designs are ugly as sin.

Are you talking about DYRL releases or just bootlegs in general?

As far as DYRL goes, the MI release had slightly better subtitles. Of course, the video/sound quality was much, much lower on release as well as missing a couple of lines.

In general? Don't expect good subtitles from ANY bootleg company. Occasionally they reach the level of "passable" but not often better.

The ones with accurate subtitles are usually direct rips of the R1 dvds, and if you're after one of those titles buy the proper real version instead of a bootleg for christs sake.

A number of the cut scenes were originally dubbed just not included for various reasons. I think Robotech.com had a few clips of them up some time back.
