  1. yeah, finally in battroid mode.

however... how many years ago was that? took so long for VF-171 to become a mainline fighter only in 2058!?

Production delays probably. My theory on this is that it was developed as a more economical "stopgap" alternative to the VF-19 and possibly VF-22 using existing VF-17 production lines, parts, etc. however delays after the projects approval mean that by the time it did become the mainline fighter, the next one (VF-25) was already ready to be rolled out. Off course, it could be that the 2058 date refers to it becoming the mainline fighter for the Frontier and not the entire NUNS.

I also noticed that in the ship when the egg hatched, 3 eyes were glowing in the darkness. Then they cut to the little green thing that's been trailing Ranka, and it had 3 eyes as well (they all blinked). I think the little green guy's a Vajira, and the entire point of the series is that the Vajira are just searching for some decent music but everyone keeps misunderstanding them

    )

If that's the case, then they definitely should have gone after the Macross 7 fleet instead.

  2. Actually, the space folds in Macross Frontier don't necessarily appear all that different from the way space folds were originally depicted in SDF Macross. Granted, DYRL? and later sequels like Macross Plus and Macross 7 remade the look of the space fold (such as the YF-19 and YF-21 fold boosters) or simplified them (like the Varauta ships blinking in and out). But as seen in SDF Macross, space folds were rather grand, large and bright affairs that often created "spheres" of super dimension energy around the space craft. Given the Macross Frontier is regularly paying homage to the original SDF Macross series, it's understandable that the space fold would be re-imagined.

Hmm, that could explain it. I haven't seen SDFM in quite some time since I don't ahve a copy but I do have copies of DYRL, Plus and 7.

  3. Heck, let's just rename it "The Green Squirrel Show" and make it about the slapstick adventures of everybody's favourite panty loving green alien squirrel.

To hell, with mecha, action, the Vajra, story etc.....who needs em'.

Each episode can be about how our hero the squirrel has to collect a pair of panties from a different female character each week.

    I bet ratings would soar.

Make it a show about Sheryl stealing Meltran-size panties and we have a deal.

  4. This doesn't really answer your question but the styling is very similar to the warp gates seen in Cowboy Bebop, and Kawamori designed the theory behind those, too. Remember that in that show, the moon was destroyed due to some kind of gate accident; I was reminded of this when Ozma said that the official explanation of Ranka's parents' death was a fold error. So maybe he wanted to retcon the fold system in Macross to make it more similar to his more real-world (plausible) rendition of hyperspace used in Cowbop. However, I agree with the issue of relevancy, this sounds like it will play a key part in the plot later on.

But explanation for Ranka's parent's death was simply a cover-up for the first Vajra attack, (which we've already partly seen through Ranka's limited flashbacks).

  5. Another theory. Perhaps the Vajra, or whoever is controlling them have the technology to create these fold dislocations and created this one intentionally, to slow down the movement of the Frontier and Galaxy fleets.

This could explain why the Vajra carrier appeared to be immune to the effects of the Fold Dislocation.

At the very least, we know they have the ability to counter them which is probably linked somehow to the "super dimension purple crystals" (as I shall call them until we get an official name for what they are).

Speaking of folds though, I've been wondering if there's a reason why the folds in Frontier look very different from those we've seen in previous Macross shows. In the past, ships and other craft (including any close by) would simply just energize and blink out of where they were. In Frontier, it seems that folding opens a sort of gate and seems to imply that the craft would have to be moving towards it to actually fold. This contradicts what we've seen in past shows where stationary craft simply just fold in and out.

  6. It's curious to note that Cathy only mentions Alto's report of the VF-27. We know that Mikhail saw it as well. Did Mikhail not mention it? (either because he wasn't sure what he saw, or because he assumed that he'd been staring through his gun sights too long and was seeing things?) Unlike Alto, Mikhail only got a brief glimpse of it.

Michel never really got a good look at it, all he saw was the exhaust trail. For all he knew, it probably could have been a Vajra moving erratically. The princess on the other hand, got a pretty good look at it, enough to notice that it was some sort of VF.

  7. Can it be V = Variable, F = Fighter?

The US planes are typically name F = fighter, A = attacker, B = bomber. Maybe the folks in Studio Nue picked that up!

Yeah, I believed it is based on the US Tri-service aircraft designation system although with some differences (a V in front would usually mean that the craft is a staff or VIP transport).

Based on what we've seen, the NUNS version probably goes like this: Modified mission + Status Prefix + Basic Mission + series number, e.g Luca's RVF-25 (R = reconnaisance, V = Variable, F = Fighter).

There's a pic of Misa in a wedding dress in the Graffiti book here http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/books/series_best.htm

It also shows Hikaru and Misa with a baby while on a day out with Max and Miria.

Makes you wonder if Misa learned from the Miria school of child care. Throwing babies

thanks! at least now i know i haven't been a complete boob in calling everything a valkyrie. :D

Well to your defense, Valkyrie became a sort of popular term for VF's in the Macross universe anyway.

  8. (lightbulb) aha! now I know why nanase was so pissed off at sheryl. sheryl took the shower booth next to ranka! nanase was supposed to be the one next to ranka. if sheryl hadn't been there.... :p

First we got us a pretty bishounen trap as a hero, next we get a Meltran who's both sexy and a loli at the same time, now we get us some schoolgirl yuri! Truly, Macross Frontier has something for everyone.

  9. Anyone noticed when VF-27 was folding "back", a close-up view of the fighter showed that the cockpit seems to glow a bit? I think the pilot is definitely in the plane instead of remotely controlling it. I think a few threads in Ep. 7 showed the markings of whether it has NUNS and Galaxy insignia, perhaps someone can confirm this?

This was already brought up and confirmed a few pages back (scroll down a bit).

  10. But I'm fairly certain they've changed modes in a dog fight, although I can't think of a specific example. I'll have to keep an eye out for this the next time I watch anything Macross.

In Macross 7, it usually meant that the VF-11 in question would get pwned by the Varuta soon.

  11. Technically the use of micro missles is sort of like when the real air force "ripples" with long range weapons.

Actually, last I checked (in DYRL and Frontier ep 1), they were using long range missiles mounted underwing for the initial barrage.

  12. And second, is it common UNS tactic to launch micro-missiles before engaging the enemy, and in your own opinion, is it a effective tactic?

Of course, you can also list other maneuvers you have seen in the Macross series as well. Any helps is welcomed. :)

Makes sound tactical sense, I mean, why go for close range combat when you can take them out with missiles at the start. In fact, I believe most modern air combat takes place at beyond visual range and real dogfights are rare.
