  1. Like many companies, Yamato has also been affected to some degree by the global economic recession. This has taken the form of declining sales this year, especilaly for the higher-end collectables, as customers have had to tighten their belts and cut down on spending on non-essentials.

This obviously has a knock-on effect. Fewer units being sold means smaller profits for Yamato, which means less money that can be in ploughed back into new product development. And development of a new 1/60 scale VF is far, far from cheap.

I think this is why this year, we have seen fewer all-new models and most of Yamato's releases so far this year have been repaints of existing products, or have just featured small retooling modifications (i.e. VF-11B -> VF-11C & YF-21 - >VF-22).

Hopefully with the financial situation worldwide seeming to improve, we will start seeing some new products from Yamato.

Actually a good thing in my opinion for those who would like to have some true "exclusive" Macross toys. The way they are doing things now should keep some Valks in Limited numbers. Certainly the 1/48 TV Max and Kakizaki.

  2. I have to agree with KirK. Stock "customs" will always retain their Value just like manufacturer produced "custom" vehicles. Yeah, I can probably go to the baddest guy in my town that does custom paint jobs and do some other personal modifications to a vehicle, but ultimately when I take that vehicle to the dealership as a trade, they are going to care less about my sick paint job and modifications because it takes away from the value of the car in the base customer aspect. Now if you bring a Ford Shelby Mustang that has had authorized modifications approved by Ford the value of that car will retain its value may even appreciate.

This may be a bad analogy, but I think the general principle is the same. Being the owner of a Kurt custom I can easily say that Yamato could easily commission the guy for a limited run of 10 custom Valks and I'd bet my last dollar that members would be fighting to get them.

  3. I had planned on giving my son a 1/48 Hikaru VF-1J as a Christmas gift this year, but it is going towards something else so I have to do something else. He's looking forward to the holiday break so he can wear the kites in his head again already! He enjoyed every minute of explaining Macross to curious family members on Thanksgiving. The women he simply told "You wouldn't understand!" Too funny!

  4. Thanks guys! He gets to wear it just for the weekend because it would be too much of a distraction at school. I'll be cutting it down with a 000 blade. No special tools though miriya. I have the same blades and clippers that the barbers use. Just used the same basic edgers I use to line him up with. I'll probably let him wear it again for the Christmas break coming up.

  5. Not sure if this is the right place or not, but it looked most appropriate. My son came up with the crazy idea this morning that he wanted the Macross Kite with a Mohawk. Of course I pulled out the clippers and went to work. Turned out pretty cool.

  6. Hey eugimon do you want to post some pics to show the difference between the kind of pictures you can take with the Prime 35mm F1.8 lense you have and some of the others you may have? Would be interesting to see the difference you get between an f1.8 and a higher f stop lense (like a zoom) in Macro Photography.

Good idea logos. I'd like to see these as well whenever you can.

  7. the 10-24 is a wide angle lens, good for landscapes, group shots, etc but relatively long focal point and the bubble front element prohibits filter use. I'd recommend the 12-24mm f/4 DX instead.

the 35 f/18 is a wonderfully fast and sharp lens, it's my lens of choice for everyday shooting. I love this lens.

the 55-200 is slow... decent if you're shooting during the day or well lit conditions but a poor performer in all other situations.

If you're looking for a cheap but decent all purpose zoom, I'd suggest the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Nice construction with a metal mount.

It's pretty fast and pretty sharp. Not as sharp as the nikkor 35mm though. The only issue I have with it is that sometimes the lens and body lose their synch and you have to reseat the lens. Not that big of a deal for me but it is an issue with tamron lenses.

Thanks for the insight eugimon. If you had to choose from the three I've selected which would it be? My thought was to have three solid choices to cover a wide selection of different situations. I'm leaning towards the 35/f 1.8 because I think it will force me to grow and develop. Starting out I only plan to do table top studio shots of my toys, but plan to later get into shooting family events indoors and out as well as my son's sporting events.

  8. I'm expecting to get the Nikon D90 pretty soon. I decided to buy brand new instead of refurbished. I'll be buying the body and lens seperately and have narrowed my lens choices down to three as a starter lens. What would you guys suggest?

    Nikon 10mm-24mm DX

    Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX

    Nikon 55mm-200mm DX with VR

  9. The 1J doesn't have to be MISB (it would be nice, though), but I'm looking for one that hasn't been manhandled. That means the box is in good shape, the stickers are still on the sheet (not applied), the instruction booklet is there, and the valk has basically lived in the box. If it's been transformed a few times, that's fine--as long as it *looks* new.

In exchange, I'll print whatever waterslide decals you want, up to the reasonable value of the 1J, using my last published price structure:

Custom-designed sets are not an option--I don't really have time for that right now, but any of my standard sets are fair game.

I have a brand new VF-1J and GBP I received as a replacement after my original set was damaged. Hasn't even been removed from the box. Let me figure out which sets I need and hit you back later today if no one hasn't taken you up on this offer. In the meantime I guess we need to figure out a reasonable price for the VF-1J. Not sure what it sells for today, but this thing is case fresh. Upon receiving it I just lifted cover to take a look at the Valk and placed it on the shelf because I didn't have room for it. It's been on the shelf every since. Hands have not even touched it.

  10. I have one. No shoulder problems or anything. No stickers applied. He's a bit floppy in battroid mode, but otherwise in excellent condition. Absolute beaut in fighter mode. Pics can be seen in gallery. PM me if you're interested.

  11. Okay, so I have been checking resellers.com for certain companies to beware of for the D90 purchase. I've seen mixed opinions (not here) about getting a refurbished body. What do you guys think about getting a refurbed body? Also, what would be a good all purpose starter lens? One more thing, any suggestions on online stores for the purchase; refurb wise? Thanks!

Think I've seen these before, but that is still one big heavy ass gun!

That night, I thanked God for seeing me through that day of days and prayed I would make it through D plus 1. I also promised that if some way I could get home again, I would find a nice peaceful town and spend the rest of my life in peace.

This is my rifle! There are many like it, but this one is mine! My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it, as I must master my life. Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true! I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me! I will! Before God, I swear this creed...My rifle and myself are defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life! So be it! Until there is no enemy! But Peace! And that!"
