  1. The Gundam story kind of ends for me when it reaches Char's Counterattack. All the UC shows/stories after that seem seem to be like alternate shows to me. Gundam for me has always been Char and Amuro or Zeon and Federation.
  2. All the stuff coming out these days are done by computer, they don't even hand draw and paint cells much any more which give shows a "glossy" and clean finish. I think Turn A Gundam is the last gundam show to be hand painted and drawn.
  3. For me, it's the story and characters that matters first in a gundam show. If a show just have good mecha designs i would still watch it too, but not with the same enthusiasm. 0083 is crap imo, but i still like it for the mecha, but dislike it for the story and characters. Its the same for ZZ gundam and the like, these shows i'll probably watch once but wouldn't really feel like watching it again.
  4. I didn't really like 0083 much, seemed a bit rushed and messy at times and the plot was too far fetched with events poping out of nowhere that didn't seem to match the rest of the show like Nina having a previous relationship with Gato (where the hell that come from?). Also the ending about covering up the existance of the gundams was stupid, considering the public braodcast of the captured GP02 by Delaz earlier on in the series etc.......... The good thing about the show is the mecha designs and battles. The same for 08th ms team, just good old mech action, but week plot and story.
  5. I don't mind if the continuity is messed up, as long as its set in the UC universe. Continuity in UC has been messed about a few times, for first gundam we have the continuity for the TV show and the movies. The same can be said for Zeta. The main continuity for me is the shows made by Tomino, while side stories, games and all that jazz are just extras, exploring what could have been or what if?
  6. You got a very good point there. I always think of the gundam as something similar to a german tiger tank, in which not many were made but was feared by all and were not in use in every battlefield. Given the size of the area the one year war took place, gundams were probably rarely encountered on many of the battles thought on earth and space. People would have heard of them but wouldn't have encountered one. Thats what i think anyway. And yeah its does mess with continuity with the first show, but given the direction in which gundam is heading with all the alternate shows, I welcome all stories and concepts that go back to UC.
  7. Even though they've done one year war to death, they've kept to the same rules, in that the mobile suits are just weapons of war and not super invincible. The 08th ms team had more than one gundam but they were shown to be just as vulnerable as any other mobile suit. I know there are some episodes where the gundam can take a lot of dammage depending on the story, but its was always thought of or explained that it had better armour since its a more advance suit than Zakus. Another excuse is the pilot, if the pilot is crap like Sayla, the gundam gets damaged and since Amuro was good with the guncannon that also says alot. Its the pilot's abillities and the story that determines the fate of the gundam. I really wish they move away from one year war too, but i'm really enjoying MS Igloo atm. It would be great if they made new shows and side stories in the Zeta era.
  8. I supose thats one of the reasons why I avoid alternate shows, even if they are good or not. But one thing i noticed in the alternate shows is that there is just too many gundams in them, almost evey major character gets to have their own gundam and they are always given fancy names, like "justice" ,"Freedom".....etc. Its almost like its power rangers or something. Also they are shown to be indestructable and capable of destroying entire armies. At least in UC the gundams and mobile suits in general are protrayed as being weapons of war like tanks etc and they have their weeknesses and limits.
  9. I'm pretty much the same, I'm really not interested in any of the alternate universe shows like wing, seed etc......I grew up in the west watching UC when gundam was virtually unknown, until wing started to make its way over and became popular. After that, people lumped all gundam shows together and called it all "Wing" which really annoyed me as a kid, and it was hard trying to explain the difference and it was hard for wing fans to understand the whole alternate universe jazz.
  10. I like victory Gundam, but the way Tomino "killed them all" again and the constant suffering really put tears in my eyes when i first watched it. War is depressing after all and Tomino made sure of that. If he was suffering from depression at the time, seems as though he tried to make everyone else suffer from it too. You'll be surprised at how different the show is compared to other gundams. Its a great show and the story is upbeat.
  11. Yeah, the darker the tone for a show the better it is, especailly if the setting is in a war. But if he makes them too "dark"and unforgiving like Victory Gundam it can be very depressing, and if he makes them too "light" like ZZ it seems out of place and unbearable to watch at times. I'm glad he struck a balance for Turn A, that show gives me a good feeling at the end.
  12. The first gundam movies were great in that it had a narrative, a guy explaining certain events as though its a documentary and they also expanded on the Newtype theory and got rid of some of the stupid robot/vehicle designs that were in the TV show. In the Zeta movies i felt something was missing from it to make it feel more like a "movie". They seemed like a rushed job to me with some inconsistences. The Zeta TV show is by far more superior to the movie versions and also better than first gundam imo.
  13. I agree that the first gundam movies, especially the third part are much better than the actual TV show, as for fan service, comparing it to the anime thats coming out today its really not that much. Todays shows there seems to be far too much just to sell a show whether it be big breasts, panty shots..... which really doesn't add anything to the story but only there to appeal to the lonely otaku or horny teenagers. About the Zeta movies, i thought they weren't put together all that well compared to the first movies.
  14. To VFTF1, in your earlier post you keep comparing first gundam to macross, girls etc, but you should remember that gundam is an old show, way before a lot of the fan service crap we see in todays anime shows. What makes gundam a great show imo is the story, not the girls, or mecha. The story for macross is not really all that great compared to it. Todays' anime as a whole are relying too much on sexy/emo crap and less on story. So if your use to seeing the new stuff, i can understand if your having a hard time looking for fan service in a old show like first gundam. The first macross is the same, it didn't really have that much fan service, compared to Frontier.
  15. To be honest i think the ww2 German uniforms are more stylish and even their equipment and machines are well designed aesthetically, but to try and make the Zeon more like them is a bit unoriginal. First gundam never really set them out to be German or Nazi, but more like aristocratic europeans.
  16. I just downloaded and watched MS Igloo 2 epsiode 1, so far the animation is great and the story wasn't that bad either. Great to see the Earth Federation's side of the war, I know its a bit lame considering most Gundam shows have already shown the fed side, but to see it in a "realistic" kind of way makes it seem fresh to me. One thing that puzzles me in Gundam is the technology side of things, humans have advanced so far yet some of their equipment look like WW2 equipment, like that huge radio hand set they were using. Of course this is not just in igloo but in other gundam shows as well. Seems like they're trying to set it in a WW2 setting only with giant robots. The first igloo the characters had german uniforms lol and now the feds have got US uniforms.
  17. I was lucky to get the entire english comic collection from ebay for £23 two years back The movie is ok, but not great, seemed a bit rushed at times and confusing as hell without prior knowledge of the source material.
  18. Well, i would say it depends whos piloting the robot, if the pilot is crap then the robot gets trashed or if the enemy pilot is better skilled. If we look at Max he rarely got his valkyrie trashed, except when he helped Hikaru, Misa and Hayao from the Zentradi. In gundam Amuro is a better pilot than Sayla etc..... she got the gundam trashed. I agree that most shows do show the main robot can take a lot of punishment and theres always the cannon fodder robot too.
  19. I'm more of a real robot genre fan, shows like gundam (at least the ones i've seen) have always shown the mecha as being not "super" or "invincible" and are just like tanks that can be damaged or destroyed. Even though they have some wierd designs they are more believable to me simply because of this fact. Having a robot that is just simply super invincible unstoppable etc just don't apeal to me all that much. The only super robot shows i like are evangelion (are they robots?) and gunbuster so far. Real robot shows i would recommend are Gundam (UC), Votoms, Patlabor. They are my top three favouritres and macross if you can stand the JPop music.
  20. In the UK the blu ray versions of the movies are up for pre-order in some online shops, so maybe the series would too. Usually shows get released first in the USA before the UK (or not at all) so maybe Bandai USA has got plans for it already.
  21. I haven't seen the show in years, so my memory of it is not that fresh, but i think series 1 to 3 or 4 were the best, then it kind of went down hill when they brought back the entire crew of the Red Dwarf in the last 2 series.
  22. Bought Valkyria Chronicles the other day, good game. If you like tanks, anime or RPGs i would recommend this game. Anyone else played it yet? What do you think?
  23. I use to look for UC gundam stuff a lot when i first got internet, but it was full of Gundam Wing crap, so i gave up and found MW and have used this place ever since. I don't think there is a exclusive gundam place anymore, but MW serves my interest just as well. This place is full of gundam fans anyway, even though its "Macross World".
