Videos: Japanese Sword vs 9mm then .50cal
JELEINEN replied to Warmaker's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Take anything on Discovery or History Channels with a grain of salt. They tend to make a lot of errors. And statements like that just beg to be disproven. First of all, describing something that relies entirely on human muscle as 'most powerful' is specious at best. Secondly, a katana's high quality is due to being made by a process called pattern welding which was also used by many other cultures all over the world. Katana's were good weapons, but saying they were the best is just silly. Anyway, those video clips were hilarious. The American they got cracked me up. -
This reminds me of a reallygreat series of strips in Irregular Web Comic. http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/comics/irreg0386.jpg http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/cgi-bin/comic.pl?comic=393 http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/cgi-bin/comic.pl?comic=396 http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/cgi-bin/comic.pl?comic=417 http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/cgi-bin/comic.pl?comic=420 http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/cgi-bin/comic.pl?comic=434

Just more reasons to hate ADV. Their anouncement that Gantz would be 13 discs doesn't help matters either.

https://www.gineigoods.com/qh1S478/ It's tempting, but $240.00 for a jacket is very steep. If it came with a Rosenritter patch, I'd be even more tempted.

Hmmm... Next question: What famous American comedian's name was used for a character in Dancougar?
-
First I've ever heard of this. Can you cite a source? Personally, I believe the anime ending was very well done. The anime didn't try to tell the whole of Guts' life, but rather a specific series of events; specifically how he became the Black Swordsman (who we are introduced to in the first episoded).

The last time I had an entire series available at once was LotGH. At about 50 hours, there was no way I was able to watch it all in one sitting. I think it took me about a week to watch it all.

I've always liked Dangaio's ending... Anyway, I don't think the majority of anime have bad endings. Just that there have been some memorable bad ones.
-
Yeah. Bad wording on my part.

Fansubs are illegal has always been the assumption I've worked under; just uninforcable (up until now anyway).

Doing some research... So far I've found that US courts have held that "Berne Convention on copyrights did not require United States courts to enforce copyrights of other countries, when those copyrights did not satisfy originality requirement for copyrights set forth in United States Constitution," (The Bridgeman Art Library vs. The Corel Corp.). I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know what all this implies though. Most of what I'm finding is that a lot of the debate over the constitutionality of copyright extensions involves the Berne Convention, but I haven't read deep enough to know how for sure.

I can try. Most of the reading I did on the subject was a few years ago when I first got involved with fansubbing. Lemme see what I can still find and get back with you.

Well at least we know it has transforming robots. The designs really aren't doing much for me though. I might catch the first couple eps to see what it's like, if I get the chance.

Someone please explain to me Ghost in the Shell
JELEINEN replied to Panzer's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I honestly don't think Oshii is taking himself seriously at all. Nor do I think what the characters espouse in the films directly reflect his own beliefs. Also, the philosophy in the films is no heavier than what's in the manga. The films just lack the silly cartoonish bits to distract you from it. -

I disagree. I thought it looked amazing, especially in the theater. Also, the chara designs are pretty much the same as the first film, only slighly aged. -
Not surprising. The Japanese companies had already said they were planning on doing something about fansubbing at various conventions this year. Primarily it's because at this point most studios rely heavily on profits from foreign distribution and they perceive fansubs as cutting into that profit. There is also the issue that fansubs distributed online are not geographically limited and so are possibly even effecting their own domestic market (in other words, Japanese people downloading shows). There are a couple of interesting points here. First is that they sent the letter to animesuki, which is fairly scrupulous when it comes to this sort of thing. There are many sites and networks out there that are not. I don't think they're going to stop anything unless they can either go after the people doing the subbing themselves or the people downloading them. A difficult endeavor, if not impossible. The other interesting thing, especially to me, is that if a fansub group chooses to fight the C&D letter, we could finally see the Berne Convention put to the test. The Berne Convention is the international treaty in which all the signed countries (including the US and Japan) agree to recognize each other's copyrighted works. There is a serious question as to the constitutionality of the convention because the Constitution does not expressly provide our government with the power to enforce other countries' laws. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt anyone involved in fansubbing has the funds for such a fight, which would likely require a Supreme Court decision. Edit: There's also a third reason as to why the Japanese companies said why they were going to go after fansubbing. A lot of the bootleg DVDs are using fansubs as source material, either as translations or even as video source.

Bah. The manga fuchikoma designs are ten times better. It's not about the designs. It's the personality, direction, and voice acting that make the Tachikomas so great. Even so, where can I find the manga? GITS and MMI were translated and released, right? I've been unable to find them anywhere. The original manga just got a re-release from Dark Horse with all the parts originally edited out for the US release put back in. I imagine a comic shop should be able to order them for you. -

War Of The Worlds Trailer is OUT! Summer 2005!
JELEINEN replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm looking forward to the Pendragon Productions version. I won't give the Cruise/Spielberg version the time of day. -
In Genshiken, what's the first character we see Ohno dressed up as (not counting the opening credits)? Hint: it's a video game character.

So, so far, that would mean that ADV owns or controls: Newtype USA Suncoast The Anime Network (The ADV Network) Well, plus the fact that Anime Network shows mostly ADV stuff..... BTW Best Buy owns Suncoast Video and Sam Goody stores. I thought they sold off Sam Goody/Suncoast/Media Play a while back. Agreed that this is a very poor list. Was this a reader contributed list or was this generated by the magazine staff?

Cheater! It's still my turn to ask questions.
