  1. Ok - here's a very on topic question from me A while back, Seto explained that HG has the rights to merchandise from the Macross TV show, which includes the designs of the Destroids, while Big West owns the rights to the shows themselves. He explained this in the context of the Mechawarrior question, and whether or not the owners of Mechawarrior could license the destroids directly from BW. He explained that since video games fall under the merchandise category, then HG was the license holder for that. So...here's my question: For the sake of theoretical argument, let us say that the owners of the Mechawarrior video game make a Mechawarrior MOVIE. Let us also say that BW grants them a license for the Destroid designs to be used in the Mechawarriors movie. Now... The movie is made....with Destroid designs used in the Mechawarrior movie ...and .... then the owners of the Mechawarrior franchise decide to make TOYS based off the Mechawarrior movie... and one of them is of course based on the licensed design of the Destroid. Now - the toy will be merchandise - but merchandise from the Mechawarriors movie, which designs were licensed by BW.... So in such a case - could Harmony Gold claim that the license to those designs belong to them? Hardly. Because they are suddenly part of the Mechawarrior movie, not the video game (aka not principally merchandise, but principally a film property). So... what then? Does this make sense? And what does this suggest? Pete --------- MEMODOMINION2342355 SAYS I'LL BE BACK!
  2. Well I'll also chime in that I like my VT-1. Although - I will admit to a bit of VF-1 fatigue insofar as the thing that was really marvelous was the engineering of the version 2.0. Now it's just a matter of collecting the valkyrie from the show and those that I like from DYRL (those being the VT-1 and the VE-1). It's no longer exciting - it's just a chore really I have to finally get around to creating diaoramas. I think my best bet is to go to a pet store because I've noticed that they always have lots of nifty landscape and mountanous and other diaromas at pet stores - mainly for fish tanks and the like - but they could work. So much to do...so much to do. I'm basically planning on converting one room in my house and making it a different world... with diaoramas and sets for my Macross, my G1 Transformers and for Gundams. Oh - and for Revoltechs as well - although I've become quite selective with those and only keep the ones that are from anime I love - so Gurren Lagann and Haruhi Suzumiya....although Yotsuba and Danbord, while I have yet to read their manga adventures (though I did read a translation of the beginning of Yotsuba online)...are definitely staying too. So cute Oops. Craps. Wandered off topic again... Ah - yes..back to the VT-1... what I could really use is Hikaru and Misa in 1/60 scale kissing, and then the same pair, only with Misa slapping him In any event... 'tis all good. Pete
  3. My, my. Such a travesty of justice that this thread hasn't been updated for...one....hang on...after July is ...June, August?...and now it's September...the end of September... So...three months! Oh...how the pink bunnies must have cried. Happily, I can now announce to all that I am the proud owner of this: Finally managed to get around to getting her. Still wondering what to do with her... Most likely, I shall make a little shrine with my Revoltech Gurren Lagann figures worshipping her. It's only fitting. Pete
  4. I dunno. I think the only real downer on the DX is that it doesn't do what the model does with the swing bar on the hips that allows the legs to rest a bit lower down. That's it. Just add that swing bar and it's fine. Other than that it's a solid piece. Also - it's strange because now that I have Ozma, I can see that there is a neck there, it just doesn't "work" very well - which is why you need the etension. It's strange.... But...whatever...I've gotten over y initial problems with the DX. My main issue is whether or not it looks good alongside my Yamatos. Since Macross is all one universe, I would have been unhappy having Macross Frontier fighters that look terrible next to Yamato fighters... but it's all good. I am sure that a zillion improvements could be made, and in a sense, I think it's worthwhile to remember that when the 1/72 Macross Plus stuff came out from Yamato, those were all the rave. Heck, I think there's even a comparisson gallery posted by Graham on MW's main page where it goes up against the SHE version and wins hands down. Now, compared to the new 1/60 YF-21...well...it's no contest. So yes - everything can be improved upon. Personally, I get the feeling that the VF-25 needs...a bigger scale to work... I dunno.. Just lots of stuff going on there. Should be made in 1/55 scale or something... Pete
  5. I'm on the fence here... Proportions look pretty bad. Not only the big intakes - but look at the legs...they aren't...well...flush with the "backpack" in fighter mode... they just kind of hang there...sort of like Toynami's 1/100. On principle, I have nothing against transforming Revoltechs... but... well... no comment until I see more. Pete

  9. Reading through this thread; these novels sound exciting for one big reason - namely they are literary works, and if there's one thing that's sorely missing in the general sci-fi universe online, and in particular on Macross world, it's literature and discussion of literature. I don't want to get into a "what's better - the visual arts or literature" debate.... but surely there's room for both, and while the mass of fansubs have made anime available to us non-Japanese speaking people.... the literature remains unavailable to us. May I please ask that you do one more bit of work, Gubaba? Can you write a prologue to your translations, with a literary analysis of the plot, the characters, how it relates to the bigger picture and anything else you find interesting? Often times, translators of foriegn works put such introductory essays into their books, and they are often very long. Also, it would be worthwhile to write an essay on the translation itself, pointing out interesting things which you noted as you struggled to make the works comprehensible and yet true to the original. I think that these kind of essays need to appear, and I hope that once these novels are released in English, we'll have as many threads discussing the novels as we had discussing the episodes of Macross Frontier. Pete
  10. Looking good! I couldn't do that if I wanted too. Or maybe I could if I even knew what Maya was Still... can you fill in some colors? Maybe make a custom? Minmey Gaurd or something? Pete
  11. Oh...interesting... I guess I am assuming too much knowledge of these characters after only 12 episodes... I'll be going through the next episode tonight or tomorrow morning... then during the weekend a ton more hopefully... I get the feeling also, that Turn-A is very similar to Gurren Lagann in terms of the fighting - except it's more restrained. Gurren Lagann is no holds barred. These guys make just about as much noise as the teams in Gurren Lagann when blabbing about how they're gonna go fight...and then they go to it...but it quickly turns out that the fighting doesn't go all out. Not that this is a complaint, mind you... But just... I dunno... Oh - and Corhan as a character might get more interesting, but his mecha, and the mecha of Bobby and Jacob...(spelling?)... hm... not really liking those designs. In fact, I don't like any of the Mecha that the Moonrace use. Might I not be the only one, given that other that the Kapool and Turn-A-Gundam, we don't have ....any?...other Mecha in model form from this anime? Or am I missing something and someone is gonna whip out a link to show me all the cool stuff I could have ? Pete

  14. Sorry for the double post, but I just watched the next episode (12) and I have to contradict myself Now I really like Diana-sama too! And that closing scene with Loran sleeping on her lap and the Turn-A-Gundam in the background....so sweet... though the rainbow out of nowhere was bizzarre. It's almost like Tomino was saying "fine! sick and tired of death!? I'll give you a sweet love song, a tender scene and a rainbow!" And Corhan (is that his name)...didn't die.... How exactly is he able to pilot his mobile suit with the cockpit open and him standing up all the time anyways?... And Lili...I like her voice... and I like her reasons for becoming a spy .... Lord Ginford (spelling?) seems to have a mistress in every town Anyways...a nice and tender episode... Pete
  15. That's a good way of putting it. I guess it works, but it's really risky. Personally, I suppose I prefer the narrative that we get in Macross Frontier, where you can pretty well divide the series into comical/humor episodes, mecha porn episodes, character-driven personal story episodes....well.. at least more so than with Turn-A... in Turn-A... there is definitely this tension - everybody just wants to use their power in some way.... Oh well...off to watch episode 13! yay Kiel is great After enduring 40 some episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam with not one babe to drool over for the vast majority of episodes (although Sayla did become somewhat more attractive after she started piloting the G-Fighter instead of just standing around or making snide remarks in elevators...and of course there was the Zeon spy girl who I loved...)... Turn-A-Gundam finally gives me a girl I can bear watching. A fantastic start (bathing in the nude), great hair (unlike Diana-sama), traditional dress and demure lady-like manners, as well as an inner-strength and social intelligence. The perfect woman. Diana-sama, mind you, even when she's dressed up like Kiel, doesn't evoke the same affection as Kiel does in me. With Diana-sama, I feel like she is simply a very compassionate Monarch, and her personal life is really bound up in the life of her people. Kiel's life revolves more around her family and close friends - she has the simple country girl charm in her that I love Anyways, I am somewhat curious about Coran's knowing the word "Gundam" and what the "good old days" when Gundam would come out to you were.... was he alive during the "Dark History?" Did he fight some Gundams? Or ....did he actually read some books about it?? (hard to imagine, but stranger things have happened!) Pete
  16. ZZZzzooooo.... More Turn-A-Gundam commentary! I am so definitely enjoying this more than MSG. Why, the only thing I find inferior in Turn-A compared with MSG is the pacing. Yes, I know, you're going to tell me that it's the other way around, that it was MSG where "nothing happened" for episode after episode while Turn-A Gundam moves with a brisk pace and the story "advances." I understand that - but I always prefered stories that didn't do much advancing, or rather did them in a way that was barely noticable. This is because the more smoothly a story "advances" the more I get the feeling that it IS a story rather than being fooled into feeling for the characters and their situations. Smoothly advancing stories tend to dilute the characters; not giving them time to mature. With MSG, the grinding pace allowed the characters to really sink in, and also allowed an attention to detail that is somewhat lacking in Turn-A Gundam. Now...granted...I'm only 12 episodes into Turn-A-Gundam..but a LOT has changed since the begining. I think the Moonrace and Diana-sama appeared way to quickly. Just as I think Turn-A-Gundam and then all the other mobile suits appeared way too quickly. This procession is almost reminiscent of Transformers, where Autobots and Decepticons would whilly nilly appear for no other reason than Hasbor was pimping them in a given year's assortment. And since the writers didn't have time to explain where someone came from, it was ignored, they appeared, shot stuff up and made sure to give their names and a short advert for what they could do... Now I fully grant that a saving grace here is the fact that Diana and Kiell's stories are compelling; the mystery of their looking alike, Diana's sensitivity and her....apparently crazy plan to switch places with Kiel...all of this is very moving. I loved the scene when Diana cried over the grave of Kiell's father. I loved the scene where Diana admired the sky from the cliff and said that she hoped all people of the Moonrace would be able too. I like the intensity of these girls. I naturally think Kiel is way way cuter. Diana looks like a carved chocolate figurine that someone got in their halloween stash last year...but...whatever... The thing is, I really like the situations that each episode sets up...but then we move too quickly out of one situation into another and it's like...aw...I already miss that old one... That said, on the plus side - the political teaching of the first 12 episodes is amusing, insofar as it basically tells us that the Emperor is always naked, particularly when the issue is war. Once the passions of conflict and the resulting deaths in families has been unleashed, then no amount of authority and top-down control will ever keep the passions of the people in check- people will do what they feel they must, and the fighting escalates. My FAVORITE part in the entire series is when the leader of the Ingless gets knocked down by that guy on the horse who says "your money is worthless!" It's great. The collapse of a state and its' paper money - all rendered useless in one fell swoop. An amazing site. I guess I was supposed to feel sorry for the guy there - but let's face it, he mainpulated Sochie's feelings of remorse after the death of her father, he keeps hitting on Kiel and I'm not blond so I don't like when blond guys in cartoons hit on chicks I like because I just can't identify with that, and he made Loran dress up as a girl, which in and of itself wouldn't have been bad if "Laura" even managed to look half decent. And no, I don't blame Kiell for it even though she was "in charge" of the wardrobe. Women are no good at dressing men up as women because heterosexual women don't find transvestites attractive and therefore really can't be too picky. Kiell was like...yeah...tee hee...let's have fun... but in the end...I think she doesn't have the talent to do justice to "Larua" - although...let's face it...Loren is no Alto. I mean - Alto has a far more feminine physique than Loran...Loran's just got long hair and that's it... I dunno...I just hated that whole "dress him up as a girl" scene and the whole idea was retarded. Harry really can't tell Loran and Laura apart? Then again - they can't tell Diana and Kiell apart either... Lots of swicherooing going on.... Hm... It's kind of wierd...I start this post off with lavish praise and then all I do is bitch for seven zillion paragraphs on what I don't like... But... I AM enjoying the show. Really. Great stuff Pete
  17. I have improved on that above picture for the sake of accuracy: I mean...right? On a serious note those- those pictures don't do justice. I once did a close up comparisson of a Yamato 1/48 with a "MP" Toynami - and the lack of details on the toynami (aside from the retarded mould) is terrible. Too much to go into... one needs to keep in mind that the chunky Bandai was designed almost thirty years ago. Meanwhile, the "MP" from Toynami was designed something like 5 years ago - and yet it really in no way shape or form is in any way better than the original chunky bandai one. To even put it up there as a comparisson to the other ones is a crime against nature The details can't be seen on pictures like this but seriously - they are night and day. And of course we need to also mention one other thing if we're comparing the v.1 from yamato to the v.2 - namely the v.1 does not have a transformable heatshield. instead, they use removable cockpits which anime-magic like - get replaced by removable heatshields. Now - again - this isn't a particular yamato fault since the v.1 is...what?...10 years old now?.... but certainly the 1/48 and then v.2 1/60 are improvements by leaps and bounds over the v.1... The v.1 was, on the other hand, Yamato's serious attempt -and probably the first truly serious attempt - at anime accuracy in a VF-1. Even if you compare the VF-1 v.1 from Yamato to Bandai's earlier efforts, let alone the MP line from Toynami - they are still more detailed and more anime accurate. It's just that the v.2 is so much the better. Pete
  18. You know.... I think there is a right time to give a crap and a wrong time. I mean - as soon as I noticed that episode after episode was just Endless Eight all over again...guess what I did? I didn't watch Endless Eight over and over. I went and did something else. Then when I heard that a couple of episodes came out "solving" the problem - I went and watched those. Yay. Happy me. Then I watched Sighs. All of the episodes in the second season were great. I don't understand why people would sit through endless episodes of Endless Eight...unless maybe they were the types who didn't want to be 'spoiled' so didn't read "spoiler threads" and had to "see for themselves" and even when 20 seconds into the episode it was obviously the same thing over again...they still held out because "maybe at the end something is significantly different." Not trying to criticize people's watching habits, mind you - but I just find it amazing that the producers got away with it because in the age of the internet when people can just click instantely on something else when what is presently before them isn't satisfacttory... it's almost as though lots of Suzumiya fans are masochists... "I HATE THIS! BUT I'M GOING TO KEEP WATCHING IT!" Granted..I understand they were waiting for some alteration, some nifty change, some surprise..... So it could have gone both ways... Oh well. Pete
  19. Finally got my Armored Ozma. Thus far, I've been content to just stare happily at the straight head-lasers. Looking at the above posted pics of Alto with that Armor on him...I think I'll be putting my armor on Alto. Definitely suits him better. Ozma will stay naked I also get the impression that there are a lot more tampoo markings on Ozma than on the other three SMS valkyrie. Am I mistaken? Pete
