Yep just checked in the movie. The kite is colored-in in an earlier closeup shot, but not at all in this one. They must have just missed it and never made the correction.

No I am not going to bid. Too rich for my blood, especially since I already have something of both of them (essentially). And why the kite isn't colored? I can only guess they missed it. It is colored in on the douga. Might be worth a look in the anime to see what it is like in the whole sequence.

Yes I am quite interested to see where the mecha auction on YJ ends up as I have a cel from the battloid sequence and the matching douga for the valkyrie already in my collection. It would be nice to get these new ones as well but more than I am willing to spend at this point.

Well no one in the end seemed to think the cel was worth the starting bid. The auction ended yesterday with no bids placed. Given the craziness of the market the last number of years I am slightly surprised there were no takers, but then again not too surprised.

Bonhams is a rather old brick and mortar auction house. I don’t know if online is a new outlet for them, but this is the first time I’ve become aware of them. If the Heritage auctions are any clue this one might get some action as well.

I have never heard of the auction site before. I saw it linked in another group. I am not bidding. Their starting bid is too high in my opinion for that cel. Plus if you read the fine print there is a 27.5% buyer’s premium on top of the sale price. That definitely makes it over priced in my opinion.

Congrats. Attractive looking cel. I don’t think that is the correct matching background though. Doesn’t even strike me as being from Macross at all.

Well I know now where to consign my collection if I ever want to sell.

Ghibli art does indeed command a premium these days. I bought my one Mononoke cel many years ago and paid a pretty penny for it then. I could only image what it would go for today.

I had forgotten I had this one. Not sure what part it is from, but definitely not the first one, which I watched last night. It was ok. The music was by far the best part, and I enjoyed the character animation. The premise was ok but the execution was a little wonky for my taste. I'll have to decide if I'll come back to the other parts or not.

Those are nice. I opened up the frames on mine to have a look at them. Both are hand painted cels just like production ones. I would have to look up what I paid for mine but I am sure it was less than that for each of them.

I was thinking about this a little more. My Macross armada pan douga are just under 11x21”, so your size isn’t completely unheard of.

Well there is no cause to be suspicious of the framer then. You say it is about 11x17? Interesting. I have not seen a Macross cel with those dimensions or that kind of layout before. I am at a loss as to what it might be.

I would be interested to see it out of the frame. I personally don’t like the esthetics of how it is matted, with the elbow and shoulder cut off like that, and it makes me wonder what is going on with the cel that they felt it should be framed that way. Where those portions of the cel not finished? I wouldn’t expect a hanken cel to have large portions of the character unfinished like that unless the final image was to be a closeup. If those areas are not painted on the cel and we don’t find a closeup usage of the image somewhere I might start to get suspicious. And if they are painted in, I would be suspicious of the framer!

Have you had a look at it out of the frame? As FM says, does it have registration holes in it or a sequence number at the top right? If not it certainly is not a production cel. Otherwise it may very well then be a hanken cel if we can find the image it was used for. Or, I hesitate to say, it might be a fan cel instead.

Huh, I am not quite sure about that one. When you say large format, how big is it? Regular production SDFM cels are about 260mm by 230mm.

Interesting. I have a Rick that is probably from the same scene as that one. I bought mine 16 years ago for less than a tenth of the price.
