    Hey everyone!

I just wanted to share this project with you, because there seems to have been at least some interest in Southern Cross mecha.

A fellow MWer has commissionned me to make the master patterns for a 1/48 SPACE BIO LLOYD (Bioroid) complete with its FLYING CONVEYANCE (hover-sled) and I wanted to know how many people would be interested in a kit? Consider this to be that rare opportunity to get a properly sculpted model of this subject from this otherwise obscure series.

The kit will have the following features:

-built in accordance to original, primary visual source material

    -integrated (free-pose) ball-joint system

-parts to build one of the three primary variants

    -includes FLYING CONVEYANCE

Kit price until March 1st: $300 CAD + shipping

Kit price after March 1st: $330 CAD + shipping

Shipping charges will be determined at a later time. Take some time to think it through, see if finances permit. If you think you can manage it, then by all means, let your typing fingers do their thing.

Cap'n, you said this model will be roughly 18cm tall, right?  Approx what scale does that work out to?

    Captain’s log: February 17th, 2021

Even though I try to conserve as much modelling board as possible, I always end up with a huge pile of leftover bits, and that pile grows with every project! Thankfully, beause this project is made-up of numerous smaller blobs, I’ve taken it upon myself to recycle some of my scraps and convert them into useful shapes.

Pic 24 is one such instance. Here I’ve cobbled-together threee different parts with some CA glue, and will begin shaping it into one of the blobs on Bio Lloyd’s back.

Pic 25: small parts means many slow, delicate operations. Here I’m going in with one of my many files to shape what will become one of the fingers.

Pic 26: after many frustrating hours, the hands are getting close to finished. The missing knuckle joints are by design, as I will need to cast multiples of these and bend them into predetermined poses before adding the joints. While it’s certainly possible to scratchbuild all the different fingers directly from modelling board, one thing I’ve learned is to take advantage of the different attributes of various materials. Polyurethane castings will be much easier to cast and shape than carve from scratch, and the fingers will have consistent shapes for both hands. Because these mecha hands will only have three fingers (two and a thumb) the fingers need to be beefier than usual to hold its weapon, especially the drum.

Pic 27: remember that cobbled-together scrap in pic 24? That’s it on the right. The different mecha variants have somewhat different back parts, so I’m creating them all modular and separate, which is part of what makes the project so tedious. The advantage is that there will be almost no compromises for the different variations, and even then, I believe that some of those minor differences may be due to a rushed production and rendering schedule than actual differences in shape.

Pic 28: more putty forming being done, and much more to come! The part on the left is the chest housing being fitted for a sensor blob for the green variant, while the head parts you see will be for the blue version.

Pic 29: it’s nice when my camera actually focuses on the foreground subject like it should! Here I’m chiseling the schnozz for the red variant. The chisel in question is in fact an old flat blade screwdriver which I repurposed. Sometimes it’s just easier to make your own hand tools than bying purpose-designed stuff that just never feels quite right.

Pic 30: I decided to use the same visor part as the foundation for all three variants. There are still certain shapes and blobs missing, but that’s because I’ll need to mold the visor first. Those parts will be so small and dainty that it will be safer to mold them as one piece with the head housing.

Pics 31-34: the legs are coming along nicely! As you can see, the shapes are stupid authentic to the line art and with a little extra time and effort, I was able to get some impressive range of motion out of them. I even took care to make the inside of the joints look blobby, like the rest of the design.

Pic 35 shows the arm and hand assembly. The latter is merely the parts from pic 26 dry-fitted, but they look great together and just like with the leg, the wrist will have excellent range of motion—that will probably be needed for it to properly grasp the handle on its sled.

That’s all for this week, don’t forget to tune-in next Wednesday when I’ll have some (semi) full body mock-up shots to show you! Oh, and less than 2 weeks to take advantge of the pre-order pricing. Tick-tock!

That is just astonishing.  You've clearly developed your talent.  I just can't even believe the level of sophistication and detail your achieving here.

I don’t think Mephisto would allow all the little chinks/glitches to pass through Wanda’s world.  Devil’s in the details, and I doubt he’d allow so many holes to break into Wanda’s false realty.

I could see it being Dormammu, wanting to get payback on Earth.  But the lack of finesse doesn’t seem like Mephisto’s style.

I'm pretty sure Wanda is doing it herself, her (movie) powers came from the mind stone, and I'm pretty sure it's consistent with the comics to have her able to manipulate the minds of those around her to alter reality to suit her desires.

  4. I’d like to find some kind of glass or acrylic case for the top of my display cases, you know there all that real estate up there that’s not used.  Anyway I found this site after a quick google search and just wanted to ask if anybody has used that site, done anything similar, or had any recommendations.

So is 42,000 + shipping just the price for 1Js these days? (2000 less if it's an open box) Mandarake has a few in stock, and they are about 10,000 more on yahoo auctions  When I was finding them at auction for 30,000 (perfect condition open box) 34,000 MISB this past spring/summer I should have just hoarded a few :D

I think this is a significant contributing factor. So many people out of work or cutting back just in case.

There are roys to be had for ~22,500JY if you are patient. I paid far too much for my backup at mykombini. Definitely would have waited if I knew demand would be this low.

Also the release of the VF-1D as a pay up front web exclusive at the same time that the VF-1S Roy is coming available on the secondary market could be impacting collecting budgets.

  7. I laughed at the Scout troopers, but then again I also laughed at Poe mocking Hux in the beginning of The Last Jedi, the first time anyway, the two times I've seen it since then, the scene hurts my brain.  When I think of humor in Star Wars, the scene that always comes to mind is 3PO trying to keep up with Han and Leia while evacuating Hoth Base.  My favorite bit is where the door closes, and 3PO says "how typical"  then Han opens the door and drags him through.  Always makes me smile if not laugh.  The scene worked because 3PO was consistently a prissy inflexible protocol droid, and the others reacted to him consistently as a prissy inflexible protocol droid.  In the example with Hux and Poe, I don't really have a problem with Poe as a wise cracking pilot, the "who talks first" bit from The Force Awakens actually worked really well.  But then the powerful, insidious, resourceful, clever, tactical genius reacts to a "can you here me now routine" and a "your mama" joke like a petulant 13 year old who was just griefed playing call of duty.  Just doesn't work for me.  Then there is the whole of Finn's character being played for laughs, just stupid.  Sorry for the rant, humor and overall change of tone is my primary grievance with the Disney Star Wars sequels, and I was/am still very nervous about Jon Favreau and TTaika Waititi's involvement in these new Disney Plus series.  I've been very happy so far, but I really hope they don't try to make it into Iron Man or Thor Ragnarok.

I wish they had continued with those kind of asides.

On the contrary, Star Wars is not Marvel.  Despite the pulpy/western nature of the Mandalorian, those goofy fan service humor scenes are exactly what they need to be most careful with.  Humor is fine in Star Wars, but it needs to be appropriate and used like a scalpel not a club like they tried in the Sequels.  Just my opinion

No guarantees they would reissue the 1J though....

If they fail to reissue it those already ridiculous prices will skyrocket.  Crazy that they might not, but as we all know our priorities are not Bandai's priorities.

Though to be technical, the Yamato 1/60 v2 had the extra feet pieces, not the v1 1/60 and not the 1/48.

Very true, however since you're correcting my correction, I think that means I get to label you pedantic.  :5:

    ^_^ All in good fun.

Those look like original feet in the picture. "Shoulder extensions" seem to be a common way to get the armor to sit on the valk correctly and allow for some movement. They show up on the Bandai HMR, Yamato and Arcadia 1/60s, and the Yamato 1/48. None of those do anything with the feet, otherwise the toys would be very hard to pose. I'm assuming Bandai is going to continue that tradition for their release (assuming we get one!).

Wow Anasazi37, correcting you twice in 24 hours.  ;)  YamArcadia 1/60s use plastic foot augmentations, I think there's a good chance Bandai may be using something similar, but it's really hard to tell in those pics.  However, the feet do seem to be lacking the metal mold seam.

If Bandai follows what they did for the VF-1D in the Hi-Metal R line, then this is the only time we're going to get that extra piece. It's integral to how the VF-1D appears in SDFM, but I don't recall seeing it after that. Who knows, something very much like it could show up on Shapeways at some point after release, like the properly-sized replacement pilot for the DX Hikaru 1J.

Pretty sure it was shown with the GBP, but yeah, don't count on Bandai including this with the remainder of the line, or the extra TV Hands

It's very unlikely De Japan is set up to do that. They would need an order in their system to match your delivery to. This gives them some level of assurance there isn't funny business going on also. They would almost certainly want some mechanism for charging you for doing this, at least a minimum order charge of some type. I've never heard of any store or proxy doing this so I'm pretty sure they would turn you down.

kind of what I thought, thanks to you all for the input.  Also realized I paid paypal, and I don't think they would change the shipping address from that. Guess I'll just eat the upgraded shipping.

  14. Random question, I have 3 missile sets waiting at Kurama Toys, and I have a set of super parts at DE Japan.  Does anybody know if I could have the missile sets sent to DE Japan and then shipped surface?  Kurama wont do surface.
