  1. The "Basara Explosion" bit was the best worst joke I've heard in a while. Never going to hear "My Soul For You" quite the same way...
  2. It's funny you should mention that, because "A Sai En" always makes me think of Kenji Kawai's "Making of a Cyborg." So, to me, both scenes of an emerging artificial being share a similar soundtrack. Really appreciate the background!
  3. Thanks, Mr. March. Just as with the general confusion about what exactly happened between Isamu, Guld, and Myung, it's comforting to me to realize this is legitimately a gray area in the source. I can live with ambiguity, I just don't like to feel that I'm being obtuse.
  4. Thinking about Macross Plus, I realized that I've never been clear about Gueldoa's motivations for introducing the unstable AI chip into Sharon, and his actions after that. It initially seems like he's just obsessively dedicated to making the project work, but it goes so far beyond that. He unblinkingly commits murder to keep the project under wraps, and by the "A Sai En" scene, he's clearly aware that Sharon is taking over the SDF-1 and treats this as the culmination of his work, apparently committing suicide as the ship comes to life. So, what is this guy's deal? Is he totally brainwashed by Sharon, and is there a chicken-and-egg problem there, since he essentially created her and was obsessed with her before she had that power? Is he just an insane nihilist? Does he think he has created humanity's successors, or is he just a music technician whose creation drive him nuts? I feel like his story gets lost behind the main characters', but maybe I'm missing the details.
  5. Found this for you, veef. I like to think every missile represents one of Itano's tears:
  6. All that song energy in one place is just begging for a Protodevilin attack. Akibastar is gonna be ground zero for the apocalypse. Unless we get some transformable Jaegers in there to cancel it. Piloted with guitars, of course.
  7. If we're recycling jokes, I'll just say that there's no reason the AKB0048 universe and the Macross universe couldn't be rolled into one. An idol singer squadron is the way of the next series. Look into your heart... you know it too be true ;-)
  8. I like that Z'Gok better every time I see it. I was initially really turned off - it seems like such a cartoony, unlikely design for a RG - but they found so many ways to pack detail in. Seeing the frame was probably the turning point fur my opinion. My only sticking point may be the colors. On one hand, it looks like an exact color match for RG Char's Zaku II. On the other hand, I find that one much more rose/magenta than red. The Pink Comet just doesn't seem as scary.
  9. Just a heads-up on Amazon - the prices on the RG kits jump around a bit, so it can be worth watching them for a while if you're pinching pennies. I have the Mk. II and Zeta in my wishlist, and while the Mk. II is around the middle of its range (~$27), the Zeta jumped up recently and is around $36 (it's usually more like $32). Also, the "Used" section sometimes has items from Amazon Warehouse Deals, where they've discounted the kit because they damaged the packaging. I got my RX-78-2 for like $23 just because there was a crease in the box top.
  10. Maybe Ranka just wants us to try some yak's milk yogurt that has been pasteurized. ;-)
  11. I was in a similar spot - until this fall, I hadn't built a Gundam kit since the Wing kits were available at Toys R Us. I wanted to make some "casual" models that wouldn't require painting or a lot of tools/workspace. I discovered the Real Grade kits and was just blown away by them. They look excellent without paint, due to nearly all parts being molded in appropriate colors, and even using multiple shades for some. Their decals also look much better than I ever thought a peel-and-stick could; I can imagine using waterslides if you planned to paint, weather, and topcoat the kit, but a straight build with decals still looks excellent. These kits are a STEAL at $25-$30; the engineering is light years ahead of HGUC, and better than a lot of MG that I've seen. As long as you don't mind fiddly little parts, I think you'd feel like you got your money's worth out of both the time spent building, and what you have at the end. Having said that, I have made a few more recent HGUC kits, and those are a lot better than the old Wing/Endless Waltz kits. They don't look out of place alongside the RGs, but the RGs definitely outshine them. But RGs only come out a few times a year, and have only covered a few select mobile suits. I wouldn't wait around for a specific suit to be covered if you really want it and a HGUC version exists. As far as where to buy, Amazon pricing is competitive in my experience, factoring in shipping. If you had a local shop to support, sure, do that, but otherwise I can't think of a reason to go elsewhere unless there's a sale or you are placing a large enough order to offset shipping.
  12. I think FB7 already had that covered.
  13. As long as they didn't get all "Voices of a Distant Star" on us, and we're still getting messages saying they're fine long after they aren't...
  14. Wait, do we expressly need the Frontier movies to tell us that Isamu is still around? I don't recall that the series had anything to say on the matter. But, regarding Michel et al., yeah, that's a puzzler.
  15. There's something about the size-to-power ratio going on here. I lived much of my life near a C-5 base, and I got very used to their sound. Those huge TF39s each pack almost the exact same power as an F135 - and C-5s have four of them, of course. While they aren't quiet, their particular throb is distinctive but by no means abusively loud. I admit, I have no idea how often they ran them all the way up, and they don't have afterburners, so there's a great degree of apples-to-oranges here, but that's sort of my point. Getting the same power as a massive high-bypass turbofan out of a little engine like the F135 apparently means turning a whole lot of jet fuel into noise.
  16. Helicopters are loud as all get-out, in their way. But I take your point - it's not the fan.
  17. Is it the B version that you are hearing? It's puzzling to me that a single "conventional" F135 would be such a howler, but once the lift fan gets involved, all bets are off. EDIT: I found this info which ties it to the afterburner design (so, all versions)... but says it's being fixed, and dates back to 2011. How strange.
  18. Maybe this is getting creepy, but since some folks have met her, I wondered about how tall Chie is. When she appeared on stage with Megumi (who the interwebs say is 157cm) for some of the FB7 promotions, Chie looked considerably shorter. But with shoes, camera angles, etc. it's hard to tell.
  19. I think it also bears mentioning that Valkyries and Regults (and most Zentraedi units) are totally different classes of mecha - they just appear comparable because of their scale. Where Valkyries are complex transforming "giant" robots, Regults are "little" armored pods that barely cover the pilot while improving mobility and allowing the attachment of weapons. Likewise, Queadlunns and the like are more like heavy power-armor than ships or piloted robots. When you look at it that way, the fight is closer to a Panther tank going up against an over-scale Bren carrier.
  20. Thanks, veef! I really appreciated the show(s) where you and Gubaba ran through all of the Macross music by decades, by the way.
  21. http://youtu.be/H8TYsSYThEs Also - sorry to be a pain, but I really dig Chie - I noticed something in her appearance on Animax a few years ago. When Chie is introduced (around 6:50), May'n gives Chie's name in the western style (given name, family name), and Chie repeats it the same way. This is in contrast to the other guests. What's up with that? I don't speak Japanese or have any great understanding of the customs, so I apologize if I missed something basic.
  22. Thanks, Gubaba. That is very cool. I was hoping that you or Tochiro would chime in here. Do you know if I have that right, about them not meeting before/during the M7 recording?
