  1. Does anyone know if there was any post-show continuity in the comics? As Valkyrie Hunter D mentioned, they kinda left us hanging. The guys who did Avatar: The Last Airbender produced two excellent graphic novels to provide additional post-show information & adventure; I'd be thrilled if Marty Isenberg and co. produced a similar book(s) to extend the series a bit. I'd also love the same for the 2011 Thundercats show. It was hitting its stride, and then got canxed by Cartoon Network, most likely due to poor toy sales. My wife and I really liked the show, though.
  2. He left a heck of a legacy within the horror genre. Another master of his craft gone too soon.
  3. Shogo Hasui-san has my everlasting gratitude for the MP Fairlady Z mold. I already have Prowl, Silverstreak, and Smokescreen, and considered myself done with that mold. Nope.
  4. Misa Hayase. I think she was the most complex character in all of Macross. She suffered the loss of her lover, lived in the shadow and disapproval of her father, occupied a high leadership position rife with enormous pressure in unprecedented circumstances, was captured, poked, and prodded by giant sex-fearing aliens, and began a relationship with an indecisive guy with baggage of the cute singing variety. I like that she was a strong competent leader, but she was also human, and her frailties were also explored. Hikaru chose wisely in the end.
  5. TF collecting has lost a bit of its luster of late. RiD doesn't interest me, nor do the majority of Combiners. I like CHUGs, but the production has either trickled to a halt, or stores in my area just aren't ordering stock. I seldom see any of the CW toys, except Silverbolt and some of the Legion/Legends class figs. I'll be glad when they've exhausted the Combiner theme and go back to being Generations. In the meantime, the only CW fig I'm looking forward to is Ultra Magnus. I have the Takara version preordered- it just looks better to me. The MP line rocks, however... MP sales at TRU are a rare, sporadic, overpriced, and fleeting phenomenon, and I just buy all mine online. The MP line is also a slow trickle of releases. I guess that's good from a financial POV, but as a collector, I want all the G1 figs ASAP, or at least the reassurance of what figs are in the long term plan for production. It doesn't help when figs like Apollyon, Gun Dog, Spinout, etc are filling the gaps respectably. While we have Tracks, Road Rage, Ironhide, and eventually Ratchet, to look forward to, Beast Wars seems to be the focus for next year, as no other official G1 figs have been teased or announced(that I'm aware of). I love BW, but, given the choice, I'd rather have G1 figs in the MP line. That said, I must admit to being curious to see Optimus Primal given the MP treatment. Usually BotCon and SDCC feature some big reveals for upcoming toys, but the offerings this year were mostly repaints and Devastator, who I sadly felt had too many compromises. I was hoping Has/Tak would release a Kickback fig to finish off their really well done recent Insecticon figs, but no. Most years there's usually at least one fig that has that 'wow' factor, but this year was underwhelming. Half the fun of collecting is that sense of anticipation for a new or long-awaited fig, but I didn't really get that at all for the remainder of the year. Hopefully there'll be some surprises at ToyFair in Feb. In the meantime, I look forward to getting MP Tracks & Bluestreak, and CW Ultra Magnus to curb my Transformer toy-lust.
  6. Seconded on that Omega Supreme toy. I've never understood the allure of the original G1 toy..serious partsformer that always looked like crap to me. The Animated Ark Omega was a great design, and looked good in both modes, while still retaining the G1 head design with the cannon. It would have been an awesome toy.
  7. It's a great show on its own, but it quickly soars into 'excellent' territory if you're a G1 fan, jam packed as it is with nods to the original show and characters. I wish we'd gotten at least two more seasons. Like Beast Wars, very character driven...and the characters all have "character", thanks to the writers/awesome voice actors who brought them to life. The look of the show had a lot of folks offput, being very cartoony and stylishly animated. I was one of the beginning offputters, but once I started watching it regularly, Derek's designs really complemented the tone, and I grew to love them. Moreover, Takara did a fantastic job translating their toon look into toys; my collection remains on constant display. In truth, I wish more characters would have received the Animated treatment in toy form. C'mon third parties.
  8. I grew up in the 80's, but Robotech wasn't on tv where I grew up. However, my first exposure to anything Macross were pics in the Sears and JC Penny catalogs of the old Matchbox toys. I had no frame of reference, and I doubt that I even realized that the 'veritechs' transformed. I was aware of Jetfire, of course, but never made the Macross connection until many years later. Fast forward to the early 90's, I was stationed in Florida, and Robotech was shown in the early morning cartoon block (back when such a thing still existed), so I caught a few eps here and there, but not enough to follow it. In '95 I was checking out a Japanese hobby magazine at the local comic book store. My "eureka" moment came when I came across a pic in an ad of what was to become Yamato's 1/72 YF-19. I was completely amazed by it...so poseable and realistic! Bear in mind, up to that time, Transformers were my gauge for all transformable mecha. Anyway, I discovered that it came from something called Macross Plus, which I believe I rented, and later bought, on VHS. I also later bought the Bandai VF-19 Kai model at that same store, although I was blissfully unaware at that time that it was from Macross 7. Macross Plus was my introduction to Macross, and I still consider it one of the best animated series I've seen. In 2004, while TDY to Mildenhall, UK, I discovered that our Shoppette had the entire Robotech series on DVD, so I started renting them. I made it through all of the Macross portion, which I thought was pretty damned cool. About three eps into Southern Cross, I quit. It didn't jive to me, and the mecha seemed a serious step backward from the lovely VF-1. At this point, I owned Plus, Zero, and M2, but had never seen the original SDFM. Fortunately, ADV (RIP) redubbed and released it on DVD. Whatever folks may think about the dub, I'm just glad to have the original series with Mari playing Minmay. I joined Macrossworld around 2002, so my education about the series, its history, and its history with Harmony Gold grew by leaps and bounds before I ever saw the series that started it all. Ironically, like most of us here, I still saw Robotech before seeing the original show. I need never see Robotech again.
  9. Saw it today. There's a lot of humor throughout. Set in the 60's, they play up the Russia vs America theme, but in a one-upmanship kinda way that's entertaining. All three leads played their parts well...loved Cavill's arrogant American. Vikander is just . It made for a nice distraction on a Saturday afternoon.
  10. I'm with the crowd that thinks he ought to let Avatar be and carry on with Battle Angel (Gunnm). I'd far sooner watch a cyborg chick kicking ass in a dystopian future than tall blue people cavorting in the woods. I'd be really impressed if he had the balls to cast mostly Asian actors and set it in a future Japan, unlike a certain other popular anime getting the live action treatment with whitewashing all over it.
  11. Their not-Inferno is cool, but Gun Dog is awesome. Love the chunkiness of the legs; TT tend towards skinny thighs. That waist joint is pretty cool- he's a really dynamic figure, and his alt mode looks great. Maketoys got game.
  12. Excited for this. Striking with the white/black with red accent motif, although the TIEs look odd with white panels. The AT-AT's look more like AT-TEs, only with 4 long legs instead of 6 stubbier legs. They should've left the AT-AT design alone; it's one of the best, most iconic mecha in film history. I wonder what George Lucas thinks of the new movie. It's kinda sad that he's been all but excluded from making inputs to the franchise he created, but he's also introduced the most unwanted/unnecessary changes to the OT and wrote/directed the deservedly maligned Prequels. I'm with Disney on giving Abrams final say. Lucas has an amazing imagination, though, so I do hope they can tap that well from time to time while he's still with us.
  13. YF-21 or VF-22 variant, VF-14 Vampire (b/c who doesn't want an SR-71 inspired valk), VF-5000, and VF-9 Cutlass. All of these have been done in garage kit form by Experten. I'd love to see Bandai, with all their experience and resources, produce these as toys. And the Variable Glaug, b/c it's cool, and I want it in toy form.. The VF-1 has been done to death. All the above pose any number of engineering challenges, and I believe Bandai has the pedigree to realize these as practical transforming figures.
  14. That was...chaotic and odd. Maybe it'd make more sense to me if I spoke the language. Shrugs. That Prime toy had so much potential if they'd just taken the engineering a bit further to make the cab and trailer work like the real thing, as they did with both Ultra Magnus figures. I've only bought 3 RiD figs, but compared to all my CHUGs, Prime, and Animated figures, these are a step back. I would expect Hasbro to throw more effort and finances into one of their flagship IPs to ensure a consistent quality product. Having handled a few, I get the opposite impression. Oh well, more money for LEGO, who continue to produce a high quality product, with constant additions and improvements. They've earned earned their place as the top toy producer.
  15. I wasn't aware that Maketoys had a pending MP scale Megatron in the works. Interesting. I wonder if the guys at TT are biding time to see what kind of innovations these 3rd party folks can come up with to make a more proportionate Megatron. Apollyon is pretty well done, although I have to echo the above sentiment regarding the kibble on the interior leg. I thought it recessed more into the leg, but it doesn't. And it doesn't peg into anything...just held by friction. I also forgot to mention that after one transformation to gun and back, the rivet that holds the barrel is now very loose on mine. It doesn't help that the barrel is die-cast. Gravity is always on in my local area, making that particular concern worrisome whenever I'm compelled to handle him. None of these nitpicks make me regret getting him, though. He's a marvel of engineering, esp all the linkages required to get the arms in place. Those little linkages also make me grimace a bit, as little rivets in a couple spots are all that hold the arm assemblies. Too much force, and you're stuck with a parts-former. But enough negativity. He looks fantastic standing next to MP Soundwave and Prime; I need to acquire a Decepticon symbol for his chest, but otherwise, for all intents and purposes, he's the leader of my little Decepticon army until something better comes along. I also saw that Maketoys are working on an IDW inspired Bomber version of Megs. I'm happy with my official Deluxe, but I'm curious to see how this turns out. I like the idea of Megatron as an aircraft over his becoming a tank; both options are better than his becoming a handgun, but that G1 nostalgia still holds sway. Anyway, some of these third parties are really bringing some remarkable looking figures to the table; I'm feeling the temptation.
  16. I received my Apollyon today. He's a cool figure, but not without flaws. The shoulders are very limited, esp because of the hammer areas; I wish they could have found a way to make the shoulder socket extend out of the arm a little to increase its range of motion, but it is what it is. The shoulders on mine aren't floppy, but they're not real tight either. The hip areas on mine untab relatively easy, so I press on the hip skirts when I reposition the legs. In pistol mode, I had some gaps where the various sliding plates that form the handgrip didn't quite peg securely, and I had gaps where the black parts on the back of the arms mate up with the hip skirts ( the area that became Megatron's head on the G1 toy). Honestly though, nobody's buying this guy to keep him in pistol mode, and bot mode is where this figure shines. Arguably, this is the best looking G1 Megatron toy to date, and if TT do finally make an official version, this toy will be a challenge to beat. I'm glad I got him. I've also been eyeing X-Transbot's Cyclonus...so far, he looks amazing in both modes.
  17. Well, as for the race question for Johnny, the last trailer provides an answer, implying that Sue is most likely adopted. In this context, it's a non-issue for me. I just want them to be written/played in accordance with their established characters. So far, it looks like that's the case. Honestly, Doom's portrayal is the one that concerns me most. He was so poorly realized in the previous FF films; it's analogous to the Prequel's depiction of Anakin Skywalker. Dr. Doom is arguably one of Marvel's most intriguing and enduring bad guys, and for the sake of the film, I hope the writers did their research to better capture the character. From what I've seen in the trailers, the Four seem to be on the mark; Doom will be the deciding factor. Already, his mask looks odd to me...like it's not a mask at all. I hope that's not the final look for the character; I want to see a fully armored Doom wielding science and sorcery to the detriment of all who oppose him.
  18. I'm also on the no more bugs bandwagon. Make the enemies human, or humanoid, with transforming fighters of their own. I liked that dynamic in Zero, and the SV-51 is still one of my favorite valks. And find a way to put the Variable Glaug in there, increasing its relevance sufficiently enough to warrant a toy.
  19. Although TT's Thundercracker looks better overall, I think I like Hasbro's blue better. But, the toy itself has too many flaws and begs for a redesign. If TT makes a new MP seeker, I hope they can find a way to have the chest intakes sit slightly higher than the head mount, and find a better solution to stowing the main gears, as well as making the mains more real-world accurate. A MP toy should depict both modes as accurately as possible, IMO. I went out on a toy hunt yesterday, mainly for LEGO, but I always cruise the TF aisle in the hopes of seeing something new. Other than some of the smaller RiD toys (Fixit) and the little transforming weapons for them, I didn't see anything new. I did see quite a few Silverbolts. I've been to TRU the last two weekends, and I didn't even see a shelf marker for Devastator, so I'm guessing they sold out as soon as they were put on the shelf, or they didn't get any stock. I did score the LEGO Mystery Machine though.
  20. Definitely proving more durable than the Arcadia; I've had mine in battroid with full packs holding a pose next to my Arcadia for about 3 weeks now, and the wings haven't drooped in the least. Very solid. My Arcadia's ankle joints are pretty loose, esp the right, so that's a huge detractor when your $300 toy is so precarious in a standing position. I love them both, but based on durability and overall engineering, I'd go with the Bandai. Just watched the M+ 4 part OVA. After 20 years, it's still phenomenally magical to watch, and it really makes me appreciate how well done these latest -19 toys are, esp if you look back at Yamato's old 1/72. It also drives home the necessity of a new improved -21 with more lineart proportionate battroid.
  21. Weird. Not crazy about that. Heh, they can put an evil-looking face gazing out the windshield, but couldn't put little folding treads on the accessory tray. As homages go, I'd much prefer the latter. The TT Thundercracker looks good. I only have a few MP Seekers, all of them the Kawamori redesign. I actually prefer the original Takara design better, but at this point, as someone else mentioned, this mold has been well milked and I'm holding out for, hopefully, an improved design.
  22. I've only seen Megazone 23 once, and quite honestly, I vaguely remember it. I do like the Garland designs, though, so I hope this turns out better than the Yamato, which I never got. From all the criticisms I've read, probably a good thing. The Yamato guys who stayed with Arcadia have gained quite a bit more experience since then, and hopefully it'll be fully evident with this design. I hope so, b/c I'd like to have one. The Proto-Garland even more. I also hope they'll revisit the Moto-Slave, as I love how it looks. I also passed on Yamato's version. I guess I'm a rare breed, as I require no attachment to a series or movie to like and purchase mecha toys if I like the designs. To me, a cool toy has its own value apart from the media.
  23. Those hands look funky, though. Why not use the regular MP hands that look good and can still open and close? Would've been nice if the side skirts rotated behind to cover the tires, but overall, he's a pretty good looking Ironhide. Definite buys, he and Ratchet. I wish these had a greater retail presence here in the States.
  24. I'm inclined to think Tracks' mold is better fitting to the female version. She looks great, but I've already ordered Tracks, and I'm happy with having one copy of that mold. I love the Fairlady mold, though; that Bluestreak is gorgeous, and mighty tempting.
