All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
mikeszekely replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, that's pretty much where I'm at. Back when the console wars was Nintendo vs. Sega, I was very much in the Nintendo camp. I've owned every Nintendo system except the Virtual Boy (I actually did own a Gameboy Micro), while I my first non-Nintendo system was the first PlayStation. I love Nintendo's franchises, and I keep buying their hardware for those franchises. Thing is, I'm getting tired of buying their hardware just for their franchises. The Wii and the Wii U were both underpowered, gimmicky devices, and Nintendo's online strategies are still a joke. At the end of the day, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be a lot happier with it if Mario Kart 8 were on, say, the PlayStation 4 instead on a separate piece of hardware with a large, uncomfortable controller that I only buy software for twice a year.- 6894 replies

Do you like Nintendo's regular 1st party fare (Mario, Zelda, etc)? If not, you might be buying a console for just that game. Seriously, I've had a Wii U almost since launch, and until today I only had New Super Mario U and Super Mario 3D World. I picked up Mario Kart 8, registered it with Club Nintendo, and downloaded Windwaker HD.- 6894 replies

Just unlockables. There's at least 14 locked characters, and I've got 8 of them from winning all the 50cc cups (don't know if it's necessary to get 3 stars on them all, but I did anyway). Plus, you can collect coins while driving, and they go toward a cumulative total that unlocks vehicles, wheels, and gliders at certain increments. For me, that's enough to keep me playing for a few days solo, but your mileage may vary.- 6894 replies

So... I picked up Mario Kart 8. Pros: It looks fantastic. You can change the view on the Gamepad, allowing it to mirror the TV when your wife wants to watch whatever's grabbed her fancy (mine just discovered some show where Gordon Ramsey yells at aspiring chefs), or if the TV's all yours you can use it to display the map. There's new items, including a sound box thingy that, if timed properly, will destroy an incoming blue shell. Tons of characters and vehicle customizations. And if Mario Kart 8 doesn't seem worth the price of admission on it's own, if you register it and your Wii U on Club Nintendo you can pick from one of 4 or 5 games to receive as a free download. I took Windwaker HD, since I was on the fence about whether or not to buy it in the first place. It was a no-brainer freebie for me. Cons: What character you pick, what vehicle you pick, what wheels you pick, and what glider you pick all affect your overall performance in different ways... but the game doesn't give you any indication of what that might be. Veteran players probably remember that lighter characters are slower but have better acceleration, and heavier characters are the opposite, but if you want to know the advantages of the standard kart over the standard bike (let alone the advantages of the standard bike vs the sports bike), how slim wheels are different than wooden ones, or why you might want to go with the parafoil over the standard glider, it's off to the internet. Also, the Gamepad doesn't feel very comfortable for this game... does anyone have any opinions on the Pro controller for the Wii U? Mixed: The new anti-grav sections don't really feel like they added anything more than the underwater sections or the glider sections did before. Most of the classic tracks have been altered to include underwater/antigrav/glider areas, which can really change how you play that track (why avoid traffic on Toad'd Turnpike when you can drive along the wall?). Classic tracks from Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart Wii don't feel all that classic. You have to have a Wii U to play this game. I mean, Nintendo makes great games, and that's why I keep buying their hardware, but when every game I own for their home console has either "Mario" or "Zelda" in the title, it's hard not to wish that they'd go the Sega route and release software for other consoles. On the whole, I'd say it's worth buying if you already have a Wii U, but I wouldn't buy a Wii U to play it.- 6894 replies

I don't know if it's just me, but Kronos looks too much like the cartoon. He looks a little flat and simple, the way an animation cell from the G1 cartoon looks flat and simple compared to a modern comic book.- 9275 replies

Yeah, evasion mode Optimus doesn't look quite right in bot mode, but the thing is the way he transforms makes me think he can retain the G1 look in alt mode while being repainted to look more like movie Prime in bot mode. This, pretty much. I mean, as cool as transforming dinosaurs are, the bot modes on the most of the Dinobots just look like crap to me. Grimlock is the only other one I'm even remotely considering, and definitely not the derpy dino Leader one.- 17161 replies

As bad as the current Leader Prime is, he looks like a step up from the First Edition release a few months ago. As for Grimlock, he does look pretty cool in the box, but is alt mode looks kind of derpy. I think if I buy a movie Grimlock (big if!), I'll go with the Voyager one. Speaking of Voyagers, did you happen to see Evasion Mode Optimus? I dig him. His bot mode is a good representation of Prime from the first three movies, if off-colored, and he transforms basically into G1 Prime's alt mode. In fact, it's only slightly bigger than the G1 toy.- 17161 replies

I was on. Was. I did the first two campaign missions, then the game starts encouraging you to do online co-op. Now, I really loathe playing online with strangers, but I figure it's co-op, so it can't be too bad (I mean, I did play Warframe for awhile). The game goes on to explain that, yes, it's co-op... but it's also vs. You're put on a team of 4, and you're attacking AI targets, but another team is also attack the same AI targets. The team with the highest score wins. So, I'm starting to get turned off, but I figure I'll try at least one match. After sitting in a room for a few minutes waiting for the match to start, the host comes on and start saying he's gotta take care of something and it'll be awhile before the match actually starts. Everyone leaves the room. I try again. After searching for a few minutes, I get a message telling me the room is full. OK, it's not like I really wanted to do MP anyway... So I go back to the campaign, and I see that Mission 3 is locked. It says I need to beat Mission 2 (done) and pay 200,000 credits to unlock it. I look over and I see that I have 81,400 credits. So it shouldn't take me too long to have enough credits to unlock the next campaign mission, right? Wrong. See, every time you want to play a mission, be it singleplayer campaign or online co-op, you have to spend a fuel. Game starts you with 3 (actually, if you sign in before a certain date, they'll actually give you 10 to stockpile, but I digress), and you earn another one every 4 hours. I'd already used 2 of the 3, so I'm already thinking that I'm not going to get enough credits playing the campaign, but what the heck, I figure I'll replay Mission 2. This time, I pay a little more attention to the rewards at the end of the mission. I got a B rank, and 200 credits, bringing my grand total to 81,600. So either I did really well on Mission 1 (not likely), or the game starts you with some credits. Either way, it looks like you will either play Mission 1 and 2 over and over for a long time, play the online co-op I don't think a lot of us wanted to, or pay real people money for the "Unlimited Campaign" pack. Now, I'm an Ace Combat fan. I'm willing to pay money for a good single-player experience (although the first two missions were just sort of meh). So what does the $19.99 Unlimited Campaign buy you? You can play Campaign missions without spending a fuel, and it'll unlock all the missions up to 8. That's it. Because apparently, so far, there aren't any missions past 8. I'd still consider it, except that your hanger is unaffected by the Campaign. See, you start with an F-4E and one special weapon. You can earn credits, plans, and I think XP to level up your planes and pilot, and to develop new planes and weapons. Except, you can only do that in online co-op. If you use your own plane in single player, you get jack. The only other option is to use a rental, which is a solitary pre-sent plane/weapon combo selected for that mission. Ultimately, after playing for maybe a half an hour, I feel like AC Infinity is way more multiplayer focused, with the bare bones singleplayer campaign stuck behind either a paywall or online co-op play that's still basically vs. I left feeling frustrated, both with AC Infinity and the fact that the only other AC games on the PSN are Assault Horizon for the PS3 and Joint Assault for the PSP.

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread

Yeah, you're right there, about the gunmetal. And you're right that Galvatron isn't gunmetal. Like I said, he's a couple shades lighter... so gray. Gray like the color of the scroll bar on the side of the posting window. In terms of brightness, or the amount of white you'd have to mix to get that shade, I think Greenscream and Galvatron are similar. But Galvatron is like what you'd get when you mix white and black (or white and gunmetal), and Greenscream's more like if you mixed white and a dark forest green. Getting back on topic, I have never bought a single third-party figure, but I've been tempted several times. I really think I want to get in on the Hegemon reissue. Where do you guys usually buy from, or am I opening a whole can of worms with that question? Does anyone have any experience with Captured Prey?- 9275 replies

They might have. What I do recall them saying is that they more or less didn't care about making the game playable with lesser hardware, that they figured people who wanted to play it would upgrade. Seemed like, even then, they were making excuses for shoddy PC development.- 6894 replies

So... I picked up Evasion Mode Optimus Prime from the new movie. On the plus side, he's a surprisingly solid figure. He's sort of like a G1-painted Prime from the first three movies that turns into G1 Prime's alt mode (with only one smokestack, oddly). Perhaps the most impressive thing is how they take what is essentially the bot mode of the the first three movies and turn it into a blocky cab with very little kibble in either mode. Basically, his transformation (which is fairly simple without being too boring) involves turning his torso inside out. His bot mode is pretty poseable, too, with a waist swivel, good range in his elbows, shoulders, hips, and knees, and even a little play in the ankles. He comes with a big gun, and none of the awful Mech-Tech crap from DotM/TF Prime. Just a big, missile shooting gun. The only real negative I have is that he's gotta set some kind of record for the skimpiest paint job. Almost every part is molded in whatever color it was supposed to be (save his shoulders... which are molded in blue, despite them being red and white on the box art). It's a shame, because pictures on the box have bits of red and white detailing that just isn't present on the actual toy. Plus, even where the toy does match the box, like his lower legs and feet, you still feel like they could have worked in a little more color, like silver or something. At the end of the day, though, I think he's one of the better toys I've bought from any of the movie lines. Granted, he's no MP, but he isn't running MP prices, either.- 17161 replies

The CHUG one? I think, if they'd gone with their original plan and made him a Voyager, he'd have turned out better. As a Deluxe, he's a pain to transform and a pain to pose. Plus, for a Decepticon leader, he seems smaller than Bumblebee.- 9275 replies

I don't think it's lacking, as that implies that there was not enough. The problem was that the human element was mishandled, and they could have done more effectively had they opted to go with less.

Man... I'm really wishing I had some extra cash right now. Seems Hegemon is getting a reissue, and I always wanted one to replace the kind of crappy purple and green classics version. And that, naturally, makes me really want to get Mania King, too, to replace the even crappier CHUG Galvatron.- 9275 replies

Saw it yesterday. I liked, but didn't love it. While I agree with the notion that a slow burn can be good and it wasn't necessary to jam pack the movie with Godzilla, slow burns only work if you're building up to something. I never felt like they were; they were just showing clips of Godzilla fighting in between a human story that I just didn't give to craps about. Oh, and is it just me, or does the MUTO look a lot like the Cloverfield monster (no one mentioned it in the last two or three pages of this thread, and to be honest I'm not going back and reading all 14 over it)? Same weird knuckle-walking on the big front legs, same little legs on the underside of their chests, same narrow mouths...

My regular Prime has had his pop off maybe once or twice in all time time I've had him, and not at all for YotH Prime. Let's say it's something I'm aware that can happen, so I take care when posing their hands, but it's not prevalent enough that I'd consider it a problem. It's much, much worse on my Hasbro MP Soundwave.- 17161 replies

I do tend to collect Primes more than other characters, and I do think MP-10 is the best Transformers toy released thus far in the 30-year history of the brand, but it's not that. For some reason, I'm really digging the size and appearance of MP-10's alt mode when it's got a trailer. If I had the extra money to burn, I'd buy every MP-10 repaint, plus either buy loose trailers or buy extras, sell the Primes and keep the trailers, until every Prime repaint had a trailer.- 17161 replies

Like I said, I think that's the fugliest MP-10 by a wide margin, and I have Year of the Horse Prime.I absolutely love the trailer, though. Maybe I should try to find someone who wants the Prime but doesn't care about the trailer to goi in on it with, although then I would have to find another MP-10 to go with it. I kinda want to pair it with Black Convoy/Nemesis Prime, beacause I think the trailer would rock with a black cab, but the Autobot symbol on the trailer would clash withthe Decepticon cab. Maybe the BAPE version, if it doesn't come with a trailer... For the record, both my regular MP Prime and YotH Prime are currently trucks, on a stand in an alcove near my bedroom.- 17161 replies

Sorry to hear about your laptop, but it's been my experience that there are always sacrifices for gaming on a laptop. Won't do you much good for traveling, but if you really want to game in another room, Steam just launched a feature where you can run your game on desktop hardware and stream it to a laptop, so there's that at least... Anyway, take this with a grain of salt, because I bought i7s for my last two rigs but have never spent more than $300 on a graphics card... but for 90% of the games out there, your GPU counts for a lot more than your CPU. I mean, Battlefield 4 lists a Core i5 as the minimum requirement, but I've seen people run it just fine on a Core i3 and a solid GPU. That's not to say that a processor-intensive game can't or won't be made, but the GPU handles most of the heavy lifting, including physics, in most games. If you're working with a budget, you're going to get more bang for your buck with a Core i5 and a GeForce 770 than you will with a Core i7 and a GeForce 760. Are you planning on building it yourself? I always think it's fun to order a bunch of parts I picked out on Newegg, then spend an evening putting it together and most of the next day setting up the software, but I'm probably a minority. If you don't have the time/knowledge to build one yourself, a friend of mine ordered a custom built computer from Digital Storm, and he was extremely satisfied with both the computer and their service.
