That thing is gorgeous!!
maybe I should make a Sdf-1 in same scale....
-
ok i finally have a update for u guys!!!
first though.... Do u know those times where u know something is off but cant quite place it?!?!
just had that kind of "Aha" moment
found two things wrong with this battle cruiser....
the "Shoulders" where at the wrong position..
and the "arms" where looking like the Movie version
why didn't i see that!!!
well i have changed that, well in the process of changing it!
first up is the re-position of the "shoulders"
next is the first step in the new and improved "arms" also more sturdy

Real life has Been interfering lately....
However I suspect I'll have more time within the next couple of weeks....

ok i have made a decision!
while contemplating how to make the transformation i encountered a problem.....
Perfect Transformation or Aesthetics (appearance and form) or both....
heres what i arrived at:
1. both is not possible with paper, theres not enough room inside the parts + durability will be a issue
2. im not sure plastic is durable enough for that purpose either
3. i dont have the tools to make the mechanisms in metal
4. Perfect transformation alone is not a pleasing sight since it will just be SDF-1 Movie version all over again
the chest thrusters being the main issue, movie version chest thrusters dont move out from center ship
5. Aesthetics it is, with my own touches ofcause
Appearance in this case i more important imo.
That doesn't mean im giving up on the both option!
Some progress has also been made:

Will the ARMD's that thunderchild made fit on this? if so I need to print them and print out the SDF-1!!!!
Hmm i havent checked if it does.... But u can always print it out in scale if it isn't already...
The TV ARMD platforms are already on my to do list....

As promised, I'm going to attempt my first ever build up of Jasmine's photoetch VF-1. The box arrived slightly less than two weeks after it was shipped, and luckily, Canada Customs saw fit to not charge me the applicable fees!
The kit has 3 sheets of thin photoetch, a great construction manual, and a bag of resin parts. The photoetch is sandwitched in between two thin plastic layers, and I plan on leaving one layer on to prevent parts from flying off as I cut them out of the tree.
Keeping in mind that I haven't completed any serious amounts of photoetch, one must wonder WHY I decided to jump in with both feet. The simple answer is because this looks cool. That and I may be slightly insane. But mostly, because this looks damn cool.
This is everything that's in the box.
AA battery for scale of parts.
Be warned, I'm a slowish builder and I won't be starting this kit for a few days, but I'll keep you guys posted!
You know.... this is candy to my eyes
Must......have......my......own!!!!!

The old cardboard statement was meant more in jest, this thing is stronger than the Chunky Monkey VF1
it weren't meant as a correction... cuz i do use old cardboard too...
for different purpose though....
-
I love The gerwalk!!!
Especially when The creators pull it of nicely,
There are some mechas that doesn't pull it of so well though...
When the nose is way to long is one example...
The best gerwalks IMO is VF-1 and VF-25
-
I've seen kits that look rubbish compared to this, and to think its made out of old cardboard and paper.
the "arms" are rock solid... made of book binders cardboard they can easily with stand 50 kg pressure, maybe even 100 kg....
since they are gonna hold the Prometheus and Daedalus while also able to move bend and turn, they'd better be sturdy

So the devil took hold of me again....
I decided to make the arm actuators movable
To Better accommodate the "transformation"
I'll post update to show u what I mean, tonight.

I would test it on a small area or a discarded piece first to see how it looks, probably more of a satin finish though, given the size of the "actual" ship. Naval ships are mostly flat in color, but the water and constant repainting, cleaning can make them appear shiny.
i will do that.... also i was leaning towards satin on most of the ship.... matte on thruster clusters....
no pun intended
Keeps looking better all the time!
Are you adding detail to the Daedelus and Prometheus?
yes definitely, its a must i would say
-
Ok i was wondering, which type of varnish would be best for the main hull of the SDF-1 : Matt, Satin or gloss....?
Personally I dont like gloss for this purpose, but I'm not sure about the other two types...?
Any input would be useful..
-
and yet again i have something to show you!
well nothing major like last update
did some of the stripes Main thrusther and upper side of the "shoulders"
also some progress on the rail cannons still not finished though...
some weathering has been done around the "legs/thrusther" area... not sure if i overdid it abit?
and i realized that i never showed u guys the underside of the SDF-1
here goes.....

this is awesome.
what is the best place to look to actually learn to do papercraft?
Papercraft in it self isnt that hard... same skill level as gluing a plastic model together...
other skills needed: Precision and Patience...
however if u mean a forum like this one....
would be the go to forum for that...
im not there my self that much...
but definitely the go to forum for learning papercraft...
-
just acquired the paint needed for painting the stripes....
and also bought a new airbrush
-

Absolutely awesome!!!! Can you ship it to us for the MacrossWorld Con to display! LOL
Great job on that. I love the blue you chose...really nailed it.
thx Shawn... not sure i dare do that xD
tweaked it a couple of times before i was satisfied with color.
Is it Non-Spec Sea Blue? (if so, we need to mail a bottle to Arcadia...)
yea it is... have half a bottle still...
I always knew this was going to be incredible! Great job man!

Dare I ask if it can transform? Scratch that, don't care it is so awesome that I don't want to see it hurt. Would love to see it up close but we know what happens when people send prototypes to Shawn for MWCon, lol, jk.
yes it will need to make some changes to 3 parts which is not that difficult... just need some extra parts...
hehe

OK today i have a treat for you guys,
im gonna show you the SDF-1
fully assembled and painted....
bare in mind that the weathering is not finished yet, and still need striping in various
places, like the yellow stripe around the main engine thrusters,
the red striping on the "shoulders" and midship.
the Rail Cannons still needs some paint...
Anyway here we go!!
-
wow...just wow.....you are probably the only person not waiting...no, not needing to wait....for an Arcadia TV SDF-1......
I look forward to seeing the completed model.....thanks for sharing!
tx alot
if Arcadia ever makes the TV version im gonna buy it, how could i not?
-
i'm in too......
option 2 or 3 would be my preferred!
but im game for what ever the majority decides.
