  1. I must be hanging out with the fanboys then cause I have honestly never heard of Dallos before toady. Then again most of the fanboys I know don't watch anything pre-90s.
  2. We were talking about Itano's comment that mecha and robots don't sell especially mecha toys and Vifam7 mentioned: Then I said: See what did I say? Its not about the awesome mecha or toys, fans just watch OVAs for the porn. I said "what many consider the first true OAV" cause I am tired of how whenever someone always states the earliest OAV to their knowledge, some fanboy always seems to but in with "No. Such and such was definetly the earliest" like you just did. Having characters and comedy are necessary ingredients for any decent show and ecchi and moe used sparingly can work well, but several recent shows seem to over do things in my book. I find it sad that rather then see the obvious: that shows like SDF Macross, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Eva became timeless classics because they were well written and thought out, not cause they added in gratuitous nudity, violence, and/or dumb comedy like they were a B-movie. It's not unfair to demand super and real robot be written and animated in the way they were done before. Anime studios and their sponsers shot themselves in the foot when they decided to place anime into late night slots where apparently the only chance for success is to pour in the moe and ecchi to appeal to the hardcore fans. Gurren Lagann is an excellent exception though that showed going back to the spirit of Super Robot Shows with its well written stories, charaters, and hand-drawn looking animation that everyone can enjoy inside a daytime TV slot. Its nothing ,but an excuse and insult to say that all the young fans and thus most of the anime market have de-evolved into horny hardcore otaku that are only satisfied with cheap ecchi instead of well written and unique shows.
  3. Its hard. Why would I want to stay away from all the dubbed ones? Especially the ones with the Korean Implants! Its not everyday you can find well endowed dubs that are completely faithful!
  4. I knew it so being a "Macross Purist" doesn't just mean your a Macross fan, it means your a Robotech Virgin! When Roy Focker said "I don't know I guess Robotech just gets in your blood or something." in episode 1 of Robotech he must have been trying to warn viewers that Robotech would rape them and give them STDs like HPV! Thats great, but what about those of us like me who are allergic to latex and have short term polygomist relationships with female military officers, pilots, aliens, and singing idols?
  5. According to this blog:http://www.dannychoo.com/post/en/18523/Anime+Decline.html As for the decline in mecha toys and kits, its probably for similar reasons as the DVDs. If the mecha franchises all look the same to fans then chances are a lot of fans are satisfied buying only their favorite mecha from their favorite series. With regards to franchises like Macross and Gundam, all the Mecha are very similiar across the shows so only diehard fans with lots of disopable income would actually consider buying lots of nearly identical mecha toys from each series. I also think that the availability for fans to watch shows in any format at any time has really hurt mecha toy sales. When I was 8 I would usually miss Transformers whenever it was shown on TV, but through my transformers toys it didn't matter whenever the show aired because I could always play with toys at any time. Just look at 70s and 80s time period when mecha toy sales were said to be at their peak. Before the 90s then their was no Internet, Blu-ray, or DVDs for fans to watch shows when they weren't broadcast on TV. As for VCRs and the Betamax they were only popular with young adults in the 80s who had the disable income to buy the equipment and videotapes. The mecha fans of yesterday were usually limited to watching the show only while it aired on TV and/or buying mecha toys to play with the rest of the time. Today though their is hardly any incentive for mecha fans to actually go out and buy mecha toys to play with when they can watch their mecha shows at any time often from the convince of their own home. EDIT: It ties back in with only young adults having VCRs and Betamax players in the 80s. Young adults don't typically buy toys, but OAV makers were able to appeal to them by depicting mature content that they could never show on a broadcast show to kids. Just look at the sex scene in what many consider the first true OAV Megazone 23 and the birth of the Hentai video genre when VCRs became available in the 80s.
  6. @Gubba Hitler is often labeled the most emo person ever, and HIM has been mislabeled by many do be an emo band. So putting in Hitler in a HIM shirt implies that Evangelion is very emo, does it make sense now? I lifted the image was from Encyclopedia Dramatica and it implies that fans watched the series expecting a lot of action, but were left listening too whiny emo teens. Don't get me wrong I am huge fan of Evangelion and I personally see it as the Watchmen of mecha anime as a well written deconstruction that was fresh during its time. I posted the image not to single out Evangelion, but highlight the trend of many of its imitators: rather then highlight the fact that big robots are awesome etc, they spend more show time focusing on emotional teens who more times then not come across as whiny punks deserving of a Bright slap or two. Honestly not everyone can be Hideaki Anno or Alan Moore and create an awesome entertaining story that is 3/4 characterization and 1/4 action, most attempts just lead to very dull and boring shows in my opion. @'Mercurial Morpheus Oh trust I me am not pure minded My favorite part about Sheryl is her... ah I mean the favorite part about Sheryl's character was actually the fact that on one hand she appears to enjoy being the spoiled diva only turn around and show that in reality all she wanted was some one like Alto who would only treat as Sheryl the regular girl and not as Sheryl the Idol. Well as for Ranka, sexy loli girls is a popular fanserive for the fanboys in Japan. What shocked me as well is when Ozma approved let alone allowed a somewhat provocative pin-up girl image of Ranka to be painted on the side of what's her name's Transforming Monster Fighter in the series itself. I did like Aquarion a bit as it picked up towards the end except for the final fight and the disappointing ending. After the series was done I honestly felt like I was trolled by Kawamori and that I wasted 13 hours of my life watching it. I say that it would be better as a hentai because it already teases the viewer in a way with more nudity then the typical mecha show to begin with and if it was actually hentai than my unpure mind would not have been disappointed in the boring plot or disappointed ending. As for Eureka Seven I have heard mixed reviews from my friends namely that its a handful of decent episodes wrapped up in a 50 episode show. EDIT: Almost forgot @Gubba, I never bothered counting the recycled footage, but later battles did seem very repetitive to me and I felt disappointed that there would so much stock footage and scenes reused for cell-shaded CG battle sequences.
  7. Is likely very true. If you want your anime to be marketable you do above. Its true cause of this mecha trend: Well that and mecha shows tend to be the worst abusers of boring viewers with recycled stock footage, something which Macross Frontier is very guilty of during practically every battle-scene post episode 7 BTW. I don't believe its that mecha become uninteresting to fans overnight. Mecha shows for the most part have just been handled the wrong way by the industry for years causing fans to get bored of mecha shows. Not a probelm though for character based shows with lots of fan service, watching boobs never gets old... no matter how their handled.
  8. Things like that happen when you forget to put things in quotes or use @insert name here. As for my post, I was being completely serious... Aquarion would have been much better as a hentai, RTSC should have been Robotech: The Bay Watch Chronicles, and that Sheryl was sexy only to make the character based plot of her as the misunderstood "Galatic Hilton" better... in many interesting ways.
  9. Whatever, the whole point I was trying to make about Milia supposedly being over a thousand years old is that her youth could be owed to all those fold jumps she and her fleet have made to battlefields across the galaxy. Thanks. Its not a disaster, more like a set back. The HD did not fail out of the blue or anything. The plan was to use my HD and bootable recovery software to recover important tax files and such from another computer cause someone never made backups like the promised they would. I knew my HD would be partitioned and wiped clean in the process so I backed up what can't be easily replaced on what few DVD-Rs and spare Harddrive space I had around the house. At the very least now I have a reason to download Blinx01's fansubbed Frontier DVDs instead of never getting around to fansubbing the RAW ISOs I used to have. Nah, its just those Robo-trekkies making every sci-fan look bad. Exactly, its nothing about fan service Sheryl just looks like a stripper because its part of a great well written plot that they just wanted to write. Compare that to the stupid plot of Kawamori's Aquarion. A dozen extrememly healthy and attractive teenagers that spend their days merging together though a giant robot in organismic bliss and finding everything there is to do with one another, yet they never ever go on a real date or get laid during all that free time they have in there dorms? Man the Aquiron plot sucks almost as much as that story that had an aging war hero with a pornstar name who got sucked into a blackhole and a small band of military pilots built like comic book superheros, their alien girl friends who strangely enough look as human as Pamela Anderson, and a nerd who had a second puberty and can free ships from blackholes with technobable. Rather then have a really epic plot about these attactive charaters running out in SLO MOE to their big yellow rescue ship with their red revealing spandex space suits swearing never to let another space traveler drown in the depths of space, the writers of this movie come up with some lame story of humanity fighting alien torsos with phasers and ships set to flower power. At least Macross Frontier got things right though with Sheryl: slurmty pop idol goes on tour loses earrings then alien attacks, spoiled brat and her armed entourage leaves fans to die in the presidential Limo. Next day spoiled brat bathes with the TV (an electrictial accident just waiting to happen), realizes earrings are missing, goes to find them, stuff happens, and her sole purpose in life becomes enslaving the most indecisive and femine looking boy aboard the Frontier into her slave using her body and her stripperific clothing. Later she finds out she has the latest form of Space AIDs and ponders rather she got it from the Squad leader from Africa who always hangs out with that gay flight attendant aboard the Macross Quarter, or if the urban tales are false and that the AIDs comes from aliens. Then she lets her boy toy seduce her and doesn't even tell him he that he is probably HIV positive. No wonder Itano missed 90% of the mecha action of Frontier, he was just too engrossed by this awesome charater-based plot and her boobs... which were only there for the plot.
  10. Having ten days pass while being in the fold for only an hour is time dilation. It doesn't matter if its the result of Frontier's Fold faults or Einstein's theory of relativity, time is still passing much slower on the inside of the fold then on the outside according to Misa's own statements in SDF Macoss. As you said, Misa explains an single hour in the fold is 10 days in normal space. That means that every hour in the fold a 240 hours have passed on the outside of the fold. After doing some simple math you will see that the ten years humanity had to repair the Macross equals 87600 hours. Divide that by 240 and you end up with 365 hours or a little over 15 days. It makes much more sense for the Zentradi to purse the Macross for what was only 15 days for them, I doubt they would have the patience or supplies to survive a 10 year straight fold jump. As for checking sources, I unfortantly can't view ANY Macross at the moment. The other day all my anime, music, etc was wiped clean off my external 1TB hard drive I see your point, Gubba. Honestly its a habit of mine to state assumptions as facts and go with them until some absolutely proves me wrong, I must have inherited it from my father who was a lawyer. See, I like over-sexualization in hentai anime because in those I don't care dam about fanservice moments eating into the plot's sceen time. For regular series fanservice moments are too overdone for me and most are a waste of time. I feel like if the creators really want to do fan service with their sexy charater designes they should either add more episodes to make up time spent through fan service or create side story OVAs /movies like Macross 7 did.
  11. Time dilation does happen in a similar fashion in SDF Macross and DYRL. In SDF, Misa speciffically states that time passes about ten times slower outside of fold space when they were captured by the Zentradi. It was this Time dilation effect that gave humanity ten years to rebuild the Macross while Britai's fleet was still pursing the shot down Macross through Fold Space. As for DYRL, the Macross was said to be three months away from arriving on Earth according to Hikaru shortly before he and Minmay kissed. However Hikaru and Misa were only on Earth for about a week though before the Macross arrived. No, I have figured that #639 was Milia's clone number ever since I first saw Macross DYRL almost two years ago. In DYRL they were clear that all Zentradi and Meltrandi were the results of Protoculture Cloning technology and Exedol speciffically stated that there were thousands of Lapramiz and Bodolza fleets roaming the Galaxy. It seemed obvious to me that if their are supposed to be a thousand Lapramizs and Bodolzas rulers across the galaxy, then it made sense that every Zentradi/Meltrandi down to the foot soldiers are Clones of some original Zentradi soldier that the Protoculture created eons ago.
  12. Gunbuster was only released as a 6 episode OVA for many years. It wasn't until 2006 that a theatrical verison of Gunbuster was even released (It had new audio, but the original animated footage.) As for the "science lessons" they were actually made as bonus features for the Gunbuster laserdiscs and dvd boxsets so you won't find them anywhere on the original VHS tape releases. Here is the Gunbuster science lesson on time dilation though: Yeah, I am pretty sure #639 means Milia is the 639th clone on the Milia Meltrandi cloning line. I know #639 sure is hell isn't Milia ranking among the fleet.
  13. Well, 1. Lapramiz addresses her as Milia 639 2. 639 is a serial number marking Milia as Meltrandi clone #639 3. Rewatch Gunbuster to see how female mecha pilots like Milia stay biologically young due to time dilation through Faster then light travel.
  14. Yeah, Itano never complained about out fanserive. He complained that Frontier was removing mecha action and turning it into more of a character-based series that tries to pander to the fujoshi (fan girls). Its just like that debate over Science Fiction being feminized or not (http://io9.com/5381793/is-science-fiction-feminized-or-is-it-sexist-both).
  15. My beef with Macross Frontier and newer anime isn't so much the less inhibited sexually its that that the erotic humor and ecchi is often over done. If your gonna sprinkle echhi moments sparingly to spice up an anime that is great, however their is no point wasting precious storytelling time showing the viewer ecchi moments every 5 minutes to constantly reinforce the idea that the female characters are sexy. As for the less inhibited sexuality, why would I want to be teased with images of almost completely nude anime girls every episode instead of actually watching a henati?
  16. Tame and pure, nah. It was moments like Minmey using her hologram outfit to change into slurmty outfits while singing about "fins erupting like volcanos," and "being hungry for the next stage" that literally defined the show. Well was Itano ever interviewed about Plastic or similar works to actually voice his opions about them publically in the first place? He is no doubt too busy to create a blog just so he can voice to the world what he thinks of the ecchi anime he spends countless hours animating.
  17. I would say that Minmay certainly fits ONE classic definition of Moe as an exotic beauty, that is physically and/or emotionally vulnerable girl. I also agree that Minmay did have her moe moments, but they were never exaggerated in a Looney Tunes style way like Frontier and other modern anime often do for comedic effect. The orignal Macross did have its sexual moments, but they were short to the point and, few and far between. In Frontier though you have plenty of moments in practically every episode that were obviously set up just to appeal to fan fetishes, to the point where Frontier is most memorial for its fanserive and its sexual pop songs.
  18. Well Robotech and Voltron have an established fanbase of nostalgic fans to possibly leech on. I should have more clear and stated that if some company were to make a so called "original" show today in the same vein as Robotech or Voltron were made over 20 years it would fail miserably with today's anime fans. Of course such a new show would no doubt market itself to viewers of western cartoons as Robotech did, but these days with more and more cartoon fans taking the plunge into anime fandom that business plan probably won't work too well either. Awesome! Does friend do birthday parties? How do I contact the big guy? But if RT fans are absolutely clueless about the effects of Robotech and protoculture on the human body after nearly 25 years of study how in the world is a doctor with only four years of medical school going to be of any real help to me? Good think I listened to my gut and didn't blow $30 on a Toyami Valkyrie I saw for sale at AWA 2009 several weeks ago. Instead I bought a Minmay PVC doll for $30 from a dealer trying to sell off his collection.
  19. I guess Robotech just gets in your blood or something. I'll say that Macross is my Misa and Robotech is my Minmey. I love Misa, but its still fun to screw around with Minmay on the rare occasion. I call myself a Macross fan and hate that HG is blocking Robotech, but that is not going to keep me from enjoying the Robotech that is already here. WELL SAID LOLICON, ROBOTECH IZ 100% AMERICAN JUST LIKE CHUCK NORRIS. THA SHOW FREAKING EATS FOREIGN ALIEN TYRANNY AND SHITS OUT APPLE PIES PINEAPPLE SALADS. AND PROTOCULTURE!
  20. Bumbling Asteroids! Can't you just let people enjoy Robotech as well as Macross? By the way, Ion Guns don’t rupture VF5SS. I say its absolutely horrible! With the American anime industry releasing only completely faithful anime now what will the Obessive Otaku ever complain about in their spare time? Surely they won't complain Robotech, the one show they've never even heard of. The Emperors of Rome had a way of eliminating their opposition. By appointing them to be Governors of distant Provinces. Supreme Commander Memo has surely learned from history. But the provinces aren’t good enough for him. No, he has to ban his enemies completely from the Robotech forums!
  21. You do have a point with today's picky anime fans and the fact that they always find out what has been changed in a series through the internet shows like Robotech, Battle of the Planets, Voltron, etc would no doubt die in today's anime market. Just renaming a series would cause massive fan outrage.
  22. Their are people like that and They are out there. Wish I still had a link, but there was some site with a HUGE article about why Robotech was better then the individual source shows which he claimed to see. He was clearly biased though as he admitted he wasn't an anime fan and didn't care for the Japanese cultural references or the Japanese songs of the original source material. Which brings me to another story. This year at Dragon Con I was staffing for the Anime and Manga departmant and we had this quest run a Otaku Jeopardy Panel. FIRST catergory that comes up on the board is "A through Zentradi" and I am all excited "Yes, Macross!" Then I see the $100 question "What is the name of the Mecha used by the pilots of the RDF?", my jaw hits the floor, and "I am thinking WTF! Since when did Robotech become considered anime and why would hardcore Otaku actually watch it? Sure enough the Jeopardy host was all "Geez! I can't believe none of you have ever seen Robotech! You all fail as Otaku. I need to give Harmony Gold a call and tell them they need to start actually marketing their Robotech DVDs at these conventions." after 2 out 3 of the contestants and ALL the audience members admitted to have no idea what Robotech was. As for the last contestant he said he saw a few episodes. He showed he was at least somewhat familiar with the show atleast... when he answered "Roy Fokker" to the question "What was the name of Kyron's #2 man." Which is the thing there is almost always a bias when getting someone's opinion about Robotech either its a masterpiece of western animation, an alternative anime to Macross, or a complete hack job that completly defiles the holiness of anime depending on who you talk to. I once even considered showing Robotech and Macross to several of my anime friends to see if I could get a somewhat unbiased opinion then I realized they either want to puke at the sight of pre-90s animation and are OVERLY OBSESSIVE HARDCORE OTAKU!!! Seriously you think dealing with Robotech fans is bad enough, trying having your college crush theaten to punch you and your non-otaku just plain nerdy friends the next time you all pronounce "Manga" incorrectly at the college dining hall... Back to your original question. If only we could put people in Hikaru's shoes and force them to actually chose one franchise over the other instead of maintaining a franchise love triangle...
  23. Of course who wouldn't want to buy the "Obama" VF-25S Messiah model kit? I am not an adult! I am the President!
  24. No they didn't remove the film grain cause removing film grain is also a double edged sword that smudges the sharp details as well. I barely notice the film grain though when I am watching the DVDs interlaced on my 37 inch TV. The film grain is really only noticable when your watching it progessive up-close to a Computer monitor. Its also why good fansubs always deinterlace and smooth video before releasing through the usual channels like with the SDF DVD rip you have encoded to DIVX. They know that fans will most likely watch the anime through their progressive Computer monitor.
  25. Never noticed the Green on Mikimoto's Misa art, but I always saw Misa's stripes as being blue as well. I was completely blown away when I saw the massive color difference in general. Two similar Frames grabbed with DGMPEG Decoder from the SDF Remastered DVDs for comparison. I did see tiny cropage with a very thin pixel line on the top of the video when I viewed the VOB files through VLC, but as you can see with the screen grabs here they its almost impossible to even notice otherwise. EDIT: You beat me to it LoneWolf! Dam you Woooofff! What did you use for the sceengrabs? Cause your images make the cropping on the Bandai DVDs look so much bigger then it actually is. The Bandai DVDs are literally cropped by about five mere pixels by my estimate. (one on the left and 4 on top)
