So I’ve recently come across two sheets of Hasegawa photoetch parts for the 1/72 VF-1D model. I’ve found the instructions that show where each part goes, but I’ve noticed that on the sheets are two parts that are called out in the manual as not used.

As far as I can tell these sheets are specifically designed for the VF-1D they came packaged with (they are stamped as being for the VF-1D and I haven’t dug up any other kits with this specific sheet), so it seems odd there are just two parts that don’t ever get used?

Does anyone know or have any guesses what these parts are intended to be used for?

Not familiar with the specifics of those photoetch sets, but those look like detail covers for the fronts of the super pack missile launchers.

Why they would be included with a VF-1D I have no idea, though.  It would make sense if it was a standard set designed for use with all the VF-1s, but as you said, it's a VF-1D-specific set.

I think you’re right, they look exactly like the front of Hasegawa super packs.

I couldn’t tell you why. My best guess would be part of the sprue including the super parts is used for multiple kits and they just added extra cockpit detailing to account for the second seat, but if that’s the case I haven’t found that other version, just the 1D and a more modern offering.

Definitely the front of super packs that fit on the back.

Would need to remember the timings of the original etching set...it also had some fast pack features (the base where the micro missile pods attach)
I'd bet they added those 2 to the vf-1d etchings afterwards as a 'ooops we wanted to include these but ran out of space, so here they are on the vf-1d which we know you will automatically buy anyways'

Oh, that’d make sense. To be honest I found this sheet while searching and just assumed it was a newer, not older, sheet of parts.

Now I’m considering if I should get that sheet too, since I was going to throw the sheet I do have on a super Valkyrie…I wonder if it comes with instructions?
