Did I respond to your post? I thought I responded to someone else's. Breh, tired. You know, looking at your post, it makes me realize how much my original line sounds like that one from Star Wars. "That's no moon! It's a space station!" Actually, It is rather dark to me too. I don't do the encoding though so I can't explain that. I could rant about some stuff in general though.

No big. But if you do want to comment anything, it would be best to look into it so you know exactly what you're commenting about. I do that fairly often when i want to argue something and it usually leads me to learning more about a subject like politics and etc. There are times that something will be lost in translation but it's not a 100% thing. Simple phrases, sentences, and etc will often have exact translations or colloqualisms that say and mean the same thing. In those cases, a translation will be 100%. In other cases, where terms and sentences that don't have equivalents or colloqualiasms to match because the original entails quite a bit , it can be more difficult. On a side note, as far as I know, the show is upscaled meaning it isn't true HD. Kind of a shame that the show doesn't air in true HD.

Ozma says Amedama, or candy in Japanese (which makes sense considering what Luca responds with). Ranka says sashiire or "provisons/supplies" (for someone working or doing a task) which in the context of her sentence means something from the restaurant. Since she didn't specify what she would bring, "something" is the most appropriate word. If anything, I probably should've said "I'll bring you something to eat later" Not at the moment. We can make an assumption that it's the guy pulling the strings behind SMS but that's about it.

We do hardsubs to the file so we don't use tracks. Hardsubs tend to have fewer playback issues so that's the reason why we do it.

Nuuu, I'm not a little boyz! I'm no Luca! *cry* Really? I'll let the Encoder know about that. Ep 1 was a quick patch job on my part. Not much effort in getting that extra stuff cleaned up. I had to do this from scratch so I did my usual job. Ep 2 is about my normal level of work. Bomb, the project leader/encoder, likes switching between romaji and English lyrics for every other episode. Ep 1 had English, Ep 2 had romaji. So ep 3 will have English again. I personally don't even do romaji in releases I handles for most cases.

Aha, encoder snuck in an easter egg. If you've watched the raw, see if you can spot it. It should be easy.

Episode 4 is actually entitled "Miss Macross" so yeah, probably.

Actually, I'd recommend the Core Community Codec Pack and using Media Player Classic (comes with the CCCP). It's the best setup to play pretty much all files sans quicktime or realmedia. You only need those two installed to play all the crazy stuff people encode in nowadays too, pretty much.

Yeah, that's kind of the easy stuff they should've gotten. The nastier errors are harder to spot unless you know Japanese though.

Ick, on closer examination, they made some really bad errors that kind of change the characterization. =/

Checked out the the Gattai sub. Someone ripped the script out of their MKV ('cause they did a softsub) and put it up for download, I assume that anyway. It might have been that they put it up themselves. Anyway, It's watchable but the English lacks a lot polish (thus losing some of the finer points in the dialogue) and they made a number of translation errors that should've been easy. I also find it odd that they did all the credits but no the song lyrics. The only one that I'd mentioned (because it wouldn't get into a bunch of messy things) would be Gilliam's rank. A bit nitpicky but it is kind of an important point.

Well, our version should hopefully be out tomorrow. Gives me a little time to prep liner notes to put on my forum =x My solo/duo turnaround time tends to be extremely quick but I'm working with a few more people than normal now. I also had a lot of paperwork to get ready to send to the FBI.

I haven't had a chance to check out Gattai's work yet. I'll probably check this ep out since I'm done working on it myself.

It's supposed to be Birla I think. I checked the various JP sites about the katakana because it was said again in this episode. Howard Glass (Mr. President) said it kind of oddly so I heard a g sound in the first ep. It's clearly a B sound in this ep. It's apparently an Indian name which would make sense since Vajra is from Hindu Mythology. On another note, I'm gonna be doing various notes but only on the group's forum. Some of the stuff I could point out might be a bit too much to put in the ep.

Not likely. I think the releases will be mp4 throughout. Were you having problems playing mp4s?

On second listen, you're right, it's kaibutsu (*changes in script for DVD version*). I heard kaimukun likely because of the music vs the voice levels being too different on my setup the first time around. I don't hear rainbow myself but it's a possibility for that instance. There's always a chance I won't hear it right for whatever reason. Mikhail thing was pointed out above, now that I know about this little thing, I'll note it for later. Altoh was a decision on my part to simply differentiate from the word alto. It's a name so doing Altoh makes his name stand out from the musical term. At any rate, I welcome PMs or emails about various things I may have missed or messed up in the translation area. In most cases, mistakes I make will be likely be because I'm not hearing it correctly so pointing out anything that you may have heard better would be quite helpful. Unlike a lot of other translators, I love getting input to fix scripts. Or I could just go back to enjoying the content all by myself. wolfx: Nyoron's Gurren isn't an example of using correct terms and phrasing to better convey context, that was just outright swearing for the joy of it. I'm not gonna comment on the other one you mentioned because it'd just be retreading my context point.

Oh, that scene. "Just do it" would be the best way of putting it and the reason why I wrote the line as I did. While the actual word is quickly/hurry/etc, the context of how she's saying it is changes how you would phrase it. Using "Quickly!" or "Hurry!" would literally be correct but wouldn't get the intent of what's being said. A translator's job is to not only convert words from language into another but to also interpret intent and meaning from what's being said and properly convey it. Using vague or general words is one of the worst things you can do when you translate because you lose of the detail in the language. When you do a general or literal translation, you come up with work that not only reads dryly but also is devoid of the personality it may have had in its original language (whatever it may be). Actually, it's a pretty bad way to translate for learning Japanese. You lose out on context that way and hence lose out on learning the various aspects of the language. Words will mean different things. It happens in English too but we're not too conscience of it. Ah, yes, that line. It's one of the those context situations and all. "My ass" was the best translation for her line both because it hits both elements of the line that was being expressed. I mean, I could've translated it literally but I don't think it'd make any sense nor would be it indicative of her feelings on the situation. Could be either actually. "Mole" and "Mall" sound essentially the same in Japanese so it's not exactly easy to figure out based on a single line. They could've gone to the mall but seeing as we won't know, it'll never be answered! I went with Mole simply because it sounds like some dessert joint and everyone knows anime schoolgirls like their sweets.

I didn't encode this myself but I use the same program. It's Megui. Technically, it means "quickly" but that's mostly splitting hairs. Fast would be Hayai, the root of Hayaku. Adjectives, adverbs, meh details. Renato: Interesting beans. I'll keep note of it for future eps. Actually, I'll make sure to put a note in the ep so folks know unless it's explained.
