  1. Its perhaps a little early to be making that sort of judgement...
  2. Following a horrific crash involving a Hawker Hunter at an air show in Shoreham, England, vintage jets will be limited to flypasts for the forseeable future in the UK (no acrobatics). Thats a real shame, as theres a real grace about the old jets, but given the circumstances fully understandable - the jet crashed onto a nearby road after failing to pull out of a loop; incredibly the pilot has survived with critical injuries but at least eleven other people, and probably more, were killed in the resulting fireball: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34044383
  3. I would frankly be amazed if any A-10, anywhere, has ever carried 15,000lbs of bombs even as an experiment. "Max payloads" tend to be a bit of a thought exercise anyway; yes, the air-frame might be able to do it but the drag and increased fuel consumption alone might mean you'd be lucky to make it off the end of the runway - and thats if you're in an aircraft with much more available thrust than an A-10... Valkyrie Driver, some of the points you're making have been probably debated ever since someone first thought of throwing hand grenades out of balloons - at least a few of them remind me of the similar arguments about "strategic bombing" during World War II, and the jurys still out on that one... Edit: Oh, and being mischievous - the F-105 had an internal bomb bay too, and didn't they lose something like half the total production run to one cause or another...?
  4. Watch this video carefully. You will never, ever see this firing sequence done correctly in any movie.
  5. They'll bash each other around a bit and then realise that their true enemy is Emperor Doctor Saurus Heil Cyber Hitler Cat and end the episode having a good laugh.
  6. Theres a lovely extra on the DVD with bits of the Japanese version. Its even surreal... er (?) watching the knights going on a quest for a Bonsai instead of a shrubbery...
  7. Just to add a little fuel to the fire, hasn't the Su-25 "Frogfoot" had a bit of a rough time of it in the recent conflicts in the Ukraine?
  8. I had a feeling this would pop up. I nearly went for Bf-109 myself and I'm not really sure why I didn't, though at least going by books I've read there doesn't seem to be an exact consensus, though many do point out that Bf-109 is more technically correct.
  9. Thats a good point about early versions of aircraft, actually - you can go back all the way to the P-51A (or early Me-109s with British Rolls-Royce Kestrel engines...!). Also, in images, the F-35Cs landing gear is noticeably different to the Bs, especially the front wheel which has a towbar and what appears to be an additional hydraulic (?) attachment strut. Edit: for clarity, only a prototype Me-109 had a Kestrel. For some reason I thought it was more than that...
  10. An interesting comparison that I saw on another forum: The Tornado F2/3. Radar had major development problems, to the extent that the first ones were known as "Blue Circle" due to the cement they carried as ballast in the nose in place of the radar. Couldn't dogfight as it was an interceptor (more accurately, perceived as such). There were various issues/bugs that were gradually cleared over time after the aircraft entered service... Also, regards payload, as has been pointed out by others, fuel can count as a payload. The F-35s is all internal. Thats possibly not taken into account enough...
  11. The Bs gun is an external, stealthy gunpod, its not internal like the A. Hollywood always gets that wrong, too.
  12. Has to be Airwolf for me, I'm afraid, because: a) Stringfellow Hawke. Seriously. Thats why you no longer have people named "John Heroguy" in T.V. anymore, they knew no-one would ever be able to top that as a character name. b) Real men play the cello whilst weeping into the setting sun.
  13. I have the Assault Kingdom RX-93 and Sazabi. Considering the size, they're not half bad - quite posable and reasonably well detailed. I'd say the Sazabi is the better figure, though (for some reason the RX-93 is one of those figures they never quite seem to be able to get "right" - I also have the Robot Spirits one, and its "okay" but not "great").
  14. Well, at least it is a picture of a F-16. You're lucky they didn't use an image of a 747...
  15. There is no doubt that as a programme, the F-35 has taken too long and cost too much. However, it is also not unique in this regard - they made a movie about the development of the Bradley IFV and they were saying similar things about the AH-64 after it went into production. I do think that calls for production to somehow be stopped are simply unrealistic; there are too many nations and other factors involved now, leaving asides the fact that alternatives are going to be a bit thin on the ground (restarting F-22 production would probably take years at best; virtually every other alternative on offer is unlikely to be as stealthy as the F-35, and the only other position seems to be "PAK-FA is better than everything so nyah nyah nyah!", which is unlikely to be a suitable option... ). The main difference I feel with the F-35 compared to other, previous programs is that its basically been the first fighter to be developed during the Internet age. And we all know what a wonderland of reason, balance and rationality the Internet is... Whether or not the F-35 will prove itself as a fighter remains to be seen...
  16. I'm in the UK, they have to pass Her Royal Majs' Customs & Excise first. Regards Gundam 0083, I think it may have been the first UC anime I ever saw. Awesome design and visuals (and music), but yeah, characters were not exactly... look, the opposing leads main traits are "Fear of carrots" and "Keeps going on and on about The Battle of Solomon, even though he wasn't actually there"...
  17. Are there any flying (original) Typhoons anywhere? I've never heard of one... it was a useful aircraft, but its never been a loved one much. Obviously didn't help that its early days were plagued by bugs (of the "I say, old chap, is that your entire rear fuselage thats just detached from your aircraft? Bit of a sticky wicket, what?" kind... ).
  18. Fair points, though its also worth pointing out nearly thirty years separate the design of the two aircraft; they were both born into entirely different worlds to each other. How much would the F-16 have cost if it had to have had stealth applied from the start? (theres another argument that stealth is somehow not a requirement for modern aircraft and that they can do without it; the counter to that is that that may turn out to be the case, but if so quite a lot of nations seem to have drunk the same stealth cola as everyone else... ).
  19. Dale Brown came up with that one a while back... Also, as the resident F-35 contrarian I'd like to point out that the F-16 started out as a lightweight, affordable fighter with minimal avionics. Then they started hanging boxes all over it... Heres something a bit different; a Tiffy in special colours to mark the 75th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain:
  20. "A test pilot today has condemned the new generation of fighter planes as being too unmaneuverable to dogfight with biplanes... " I saw "The Imitation Game" the other day. Continuing the misuse of aircraft in war films, it has a single-seat Me-109 escorting German bombers over London during The Blitz. At night. Of course, not the only slight liberty taken with that films historical story. Now the second film I've seen about Bletchley Park that doesn't actually feature Bletchley Park (another country house stands in instead). As I once heard one of the tour guides remark "To movie people, the real Bletchley Park doesn't look like Bletchley Park [1]... ". [1] To be fair to Hollywood, the real building has long been noted for its... interesting approach to architecture.
