  1. I didn't know the model but it appears I have the Paasche H that was mentioned above. I've had it for more than 20 years. It is OK, I've done all of my models with it for a long (long) time... I suppose there could be a lot better, but until I get totally frustrated, I don't plan to upgrade. I've used it for models as well as for illustration. For gradients, you probably can do a lot better. For just spray painting, it is OK I think.

  2. d the Megaroad does head toward the core, albeit in a round about way. It heads in one direction and then swings back around on a wide arc.

Yes, but then as it falls off the screen it begins to turn away from the core again.

I've drawn the approximate path that is shown in the previous frames and the course as the Megaroad-01 is about to disappear from view:

  3. it'd be impossible to be accurate within the time and visual requirements.

And if they were accurate, it would be like the Total Perspective Vortex. You'd go insane.

In an infinite universe, the one thing sentient life cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion.

  4. Happy I can say I've never seen that English dub.

Back in the day, I got my hands on a VHS dub of DYRL with no subtitles at all... I still have that tape! I didn't understand Japanese much, but it was better than a bad dub. It added just the right degree of mystery. -_-

  5. Seems like they could've at least rendered everything in high quality for the opening, instead of resorting to low-polygon missiles, even if it was just for a few frames.

In fact, for a few frames, I think they should've fixed this. Later frames in this sequence have higher polygon missiles. (Don't they know people will be looking at this frame by frame? It is 2008)

I suppose it's too much to ask for a beer can when human hands aren't even touching these frames anymore.

  6. I first ran into Macross in my local comic shop, where I found the Comico adaption of SDF Macross. I didn't have cable TV, so no access to the Robotech TV show. This comic book ignited my interest in Japanese language and animation. Does this count as Macross or Robotech? Well it's on the MW book list so I say SDF:M. B))

At some point I got my hands on the DYRL movie program through that comic shop, and also the Macross Graffiti book.

I don't remember if I found the model kits before or after the comic was transformed into Robotech. I had a catalog of models (Gundam, Dougram, Dunbine, Macross, Yamato, etc.) that were being imported to the USA, and another one of books (that one might've been Books Nippan). I pored over these catalogs for hours, making plans...

  7. I was looking at the VF-4 kit today and wondering what to do about this area. Does anybody know what are these things? Are they thrusters, similar to the handle/vernier thrusters?

    Thanks

  8. I was able to get Mr. Surfacer 500 and 1000 from HLJ in the last couple of months. It took a while, though. You can order it even though it is on backorder, and they'll ship it when they get it.

  9. I've ordered a bunch of Kotobukiya parts to see which ones work the best for these in 1/72 scale. I'll report after I have the parts (some of them just shipped from HLJ after being backordered for a while, some are still on backorder).

I think the best will be KBYP-113 Burner Nozzle III with an extra strip of styrene, we'll see. I think this is what maxjr used on his VF-0.

Here's an illustration of the "Low-thrust vernier thruster/multipurpose hook & handle" from the illustrious Macross Mecha Manual

  10. The color scheme you used looks much more like a real world example. Thanks for sharing the pics.

    What's up next?

Thanks! Next for Macross eventually will be my VF-1S and VE-1 Hasegawa kits, and my VF-4. But right now I'm working on a customized Babylon 5 Lost Tales Starfury. This is all to get my skills back up to speed so I can do justice to the Macross kits, of course. :-D

BTW, jardann, I finally got a pin vise and was able to fix my broken 1/72 VF-1J head cannon as you suggested, with a tiny brass rod! (See http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?s=&a...t&p=535434). In these pics of the 1/100 you might be able to pick out that I drilled out the head cannon barrels. I never knew drilling could be so fun, or so unnerving...

  11. Here's a 1/100 Bandai variable VF-1J that I had sitting around mostly finished for about 15 years. As has been stated this kit is really out of proportion, but it looks OK in fighter mode. I had painted at the time of assembly with a sort of low-visibility gull grey.

This is the Millia kit, modeled in red plastic. The box art looks like this but says copyright 1985: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...ban_505200b.jpg ... I'm sure I bought it in the late '80s, definitely not 1994-5 as the MW model list shows: http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/models...bandai_1994.htm

Last month, I applied the decals, with a custom number (230). The decal sheet came with decals for Max, Millia, and basic markings. I did panel lining wash and some highlighting, and then some dirtying up overall.

Flaws: unfortunately I have no idea what color was used for the dark grey, and there are some chips that need to be repainted on the rocket launchers. I just left them. Also I am missing a part on the back of the super pack cannon. And I didn't bother to fill in the huge pits on top of the reactive missiles. Oh well. I'm ready to move on from this one, it looks better than it did before. :-)

I made the base from wood and an aluminum rod. There is a flat bar of styrene attached to the top of the rod, and the plane sits on top of that.

Let me know what you think.
