  1. Actually, our alphebet comes from the Phoenicians (who were the only people in the world to independently create an almost purely phonetic writing system). Plus, the Egyptians developed their writing system (which was mostly pictographic and never did develop into an alphebet) from contact with the Sumerians who were the first to create a writing system.
  2. I hope your joking. Superman IS the original. Geez... Really? What about Achilles for one....or Odysseus(or however you spell it) Geez I hope you are REALLY joking here. If no one wrote anymore stories because it was done already sometime in the distant past, we'd have nothing at all. It's ALL been done before, so get over it. Nothing new under the sun.
  3. I really want the J w/packs, but I don't know if I can really justify spending two-hundred bucks on myself a month before Christmas.
  4. I mean, the new guy (assuming it's a real actor) looks like he's at least ten years older than Cushing in a film that's set at least twenty years before the Cushing was in.
  5. Here's a thought: why not make her an English teacher and keep the setting in Japan? I guess this didn't occur to the mouth breathers at ADV. And yeah, Osaka doesn't have an accent. That's part of her weirdness.
  6. *snort* Yeah there's NO resemblence, is there? Why does the new one from the prequal look older than the original?
  7. I imagine someone who knows what they're doing could easily reproduce it, or something like it. The valks look to all be the same picture just in different sizes.
  8. As I understand it, "perfect transformation" just means that there aren't any removable parts. The Bandai and MPC almost have it except the heatshield on both and gunpod on the former and the antanae on the latter.
  9. Is that an ad for a con? It does look pretty cool.
  10. I could have sworn he played the Goblin's kid. Granted, I didn't actually look at the cast list, but the actors must look an awfully lot alike.
  11. That's what scares me......he may LOOK evil but he needs to have the acting chops to play the part correctly (that rough/smooth skin line in Episode 2 didn't help one bit). I don't think it's his acting ability. He did a great job in Spiderman. But even the best actor can only do so much with bad writing.
  12. OT, but I'm curious, Zeta, as to why you have a scan of Marc Bolan's death certificate linked in your sig?
  13. I don't think whether anyone escapes or not was really important for the story, so that's probably they never say.
  14. Actually, I think the idea was not to rebuild, but to live primitively. Everyone knows that stone age hunter/gatherers all live in perfect harmony with nature and are much happier than modern people (yeah right). The people went mad on the space station because humans just can't handle living away from the Earth and committed mass suicide.
  15. Not to defend the steaming pile of feces that is Blue Gender, but I have heard that they originally planned the series to go another ten episodes or so, but cut it back due to budget/ratings problems. Basically, the last few episodes tried to cover all the story that they no longer had time to do. Personally, I think they should've just left it as an alien bug invasion story instead of going for the bad Miyazaki rip off.
  16. In other words, you're better off watching Nausicaa.
  17. It's a DYRL? sketch, but why does it have Tatsunoku on it? I thought DYRL? was just a Big West thing.
  18. Great flick. Too bad it won't be in any theaters anywhere near here.
  19. I just like them to play with. They're fun.
  20. True, but the first episode should be the one to grab me and make me interested enough to want to see the next twenty. This really didn't do that.
  21. I just saw the first episode of this and was struck with the utter averageness of it. It's not a bad show; it's just nothing that really makes it stand out. Plus, the music was all recycled from the OVA (except the closing song). This'll be a rental at best when it comes out in the US.
  22. While I think this place suffers from having way too many little boards already, I think having a tangency board would be a good idea. A place for people to ask questions like this, talk about events both personal and public, or simply have discussions that don't necessarily fall under the SF/anime subject. I think keeping it religious/politics free is a must, but giving people a place to be "off topic" would be an asset to the community.
  23. Amen. Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko was pretty much a who's who of female Japanese voice actors in the mid-nineties. To add to the above list: Kanai Mika (Tifa Adelle in Gundam X) as Lote Suzuki Masami (Chacha in Akazukin Chacha, Amelia in Slayers) as Eutron Neya Michiko (Rally Vincent in Gunsmith Cats, Emilia in Macross 7 The Galaxy is Calling Me) as Sylvie Dread
  24. I think NERV hit the nail on the head here. I don't see the Marvel comic as being a parody. Had it been so, then everything would be fine. Also, it should be ADV Films or Manga Ent. who should sue, as they are the US license holders of Eva.
  25. The first DVD finally arrived from CD Japan yesterday, so I'll weigh in with my own opinions on Di Gi Charat Nyo -nyu. First, it's very obvious that Brocolli is trying to break away from the other TV series -nyu. The previous Di Gi Charat shows were co-produced by TBS and Star Child/King Records -nyu. The new series was co-produced by Emotion/Bandai Visual -nyu. The two areas where the break is most noticible is firstly the lack of a Masami Okui opening song -nyu. The second is that all the characters created for the original TV shows have all been replaced by new characters who look and sound just like them, but with different names and modified roles/personalities -nyu. The original Broccoli characters all seem to have been left in tact -nyu. The character designs have changed slightly -nyu. They're a bit softer and more rounded than in the first TV series, though they share the same character designer, Yamakawa Yoshiki (not Koge Donbo, who is the creator of the characters, but had little to do with the anime) -nyu. I'm really happy that most traces of Panyo Panyo have pretty much been eliminated -nyu. I'm wondering if Pyocola will be showing up later. Also, as an aside, Puchiko isn't related to Dejiko -nyu. I'm also happy that the same wackiness that borders on the psychadelic is still present -nyu. The episodes are fun and we get to see a lot of the character interaction -nyu. I'm not so sure I like some of the new characters, but they aren't bad -nyu. I also wish they'd introduced Rabi~en~Rose a bit sooner, as the bits between her and Dejiko are really good in this series, so far -nyu. The animation is as surprisingly sophisticated as ever (most people are distracted by the simple designs and lack of backgrounds and miss how good the animation really is) -nyu. The problems I had with this show center mostly around the music -nyu. It's really not that good, especially the opening -nyu. I guess I was spoiled by the great Makkun openings which not only had some really catchy tunes, but some fun lyrics as well -nyu. The background music mostly sits in the background, which is okay, but still disapointing -nyu. The closing song's only redeeming quality is it's novelty as a Ranma 1/2 cover, which wears out really fast -nyu. As for other problems, the length of the episodes should've been shortened (maybe not as short as the original 3.5 minute originals, but definitely shorter than the 12 they have in this series), and I miss some of the TBS characters, notably Abarenbo and Kimataku -nyu. As for the Japanese release, Broccoli really knows how to treat their fans -nyu! The DVD came with a second disc of bonus material (interviews, a concert video, and some short radio play bits set to stills) -nyu. It came with a card case and the first set of playing cards (the rest will come with the other volumes) -nyu. It also came with a head band and one of those short kimonos (big enough for me to actually wear, amazingly enough) -nyu! 8,800 yen is what it cost, but well worth it -nyu.
