  1. Already started talking about it here, since the game is multiplatform.
  2. The reason you're not getting sound is because DVI doesn't carry sound. I'd guess that your monitor doesn't have built-in speakers, but even if it does, they accept a jack similar to a headphone jack. I assume when you say that your Xbox is connected using an HDMI/DVI cable, you're connecting a cable that's HDMI to the 360, but the other end is DVI, and plugged into a DVI port on the monitor? If that's the case, you really only have two options... the first option, if your monitor has a VGA port, you can buy the official Xbox 360 VGA adapter. The picture will be slightly less crisp, but the official adapter has RCA jacks to connect to a variety of stereo speakers. For the best sound, although the more expensive solution, buy a surround sound set up with at least one fiber optic audio jack. (I think, depending on your Xbox, you might need another adapter from Microsoft, but still). You can connect the fiber optic audio to the audio receiver.
  3. Try the demo, David. It's not as big a deal as it sounds. With the limiter on, you can pick third-person behind the plane, 1st person HUD only, or 1st person cockpit. And with the limiter on, it controls almost like Ace Combat. The yaw buttons are the shoulder buttons, and break/accelerate at the triggers. You still use the left stick to roll the plane, then pull back to turn. The stuff that takes getting used to is that up and down on the d-pad changes what kind of missile you're using, A fires the missiles, and B fires the guns.
  4. Hey, has anyone tried the H.A.W.X. demo? I grabbed it this evening and gave it a whirl. It's simultaneously better and worse than I'd expected. It's better because it's pretty arcade, which puts it closer to Ace Combat than Over G. In limiter-on mode, you don't have to worry about stalls. You can take a few hits before you die, and you're carrying something like 250 missiles. In some ways, it's even more arcadey than Ace Combat... at times, you can activate an "Enhanced Reality System" that puts a series of triangles up. Depending on the context you activated the ERS in, flying through the triangles will put you on the optimal path to hit a ground target nestled between skyscrapers, to get behind a particular enemy, or to dodge a missile. Where the game goes down hill, though, is when you turn the limiter off. The concept is cool... the fighter's FCS prevents you from turning in a way that'd cause the pilot to black out or to cause the fighter to stall, but by turning that limiter off, you can perform riskier moves to try to gain the upper hand. In practice, this is the most useless feature ever crammed into a game. For one thing, blackouts don't seem to be an issue, just stalls. But the big problem is that, far from giving you an advantage, it makes the game borderline unplayable. Turning the limiter off puts the camera a great distance from your fighter, and the camera is no longer fixed to the tail of the fighter. This has you struggling to turn your fighter around and line it up with a target, without stalling, from a distance and at an angle. The good about the limiter is that, aside from the tutorial level, it doesn't seem to be necessary. If the controls can be re-mapped to be more like Ace Combat's, H.A.W.X. will probably be worth checking out.
  5. As is often the case with stuff on the Onion, it's funny for the grain of truth to it.
  6. That's just how Kratos hugs stuff. Y'know... angry.
  7. You can speak for me, because that's almost exactly how I feel. I mean, if I see someone selling some G1 Transformer I like a yard sale or something, I might snap it up. But I'm not paying Ultra-class prices or higher for toys that often didn't have any better articulation than a Micromaster/Spychanger/Minicon.
  8. It's funny that you mentioned those things. While I left his Kodak and Lexmark software installed (hey, you and I might not use it, but he might), I did nix both of them (among other things) from running at Windows start up. As for AOL, it looks like it came with the laptop (a Gateway), and according to the Add/Remove Programs applet nothing AOL-related had been used since 2007, so I completely removed anything AOL related from the system.
  9. Ah, well as aggravating as it is, that doesn't sound too bad. Do you do watch a lot of mkv files? I avoid them whenever possible; I wish fansubbers would stop using them, because there's plenty of more commonly used alternatives.
  10. Az, emajnthis, thanks for the help. Problem seems to be resolved.
  11. I'm stumped. The only other thing I've heard is that particular model can be a little flaky when the source is Linear PCM and not Bitstream. But I'm not sure how that affects what you're doing.
  12. Which OS? I know in Vista it wasn't enough to hook up a 5.1 system, I had to manually tell it that there were 5.1 speakers.
  13. Oh, one other thing that seems to be related... occasionally, an error message will pop up that says something like "Dr Watson Post Mortem Debugger has encountered an error and needs to close."
  14. Okay, I got the charger, and I ran HiJackThis. 15. That was one of the things I still wanted to try. That was another. I wasn't even aware of that one. I'll definitely give it a shot. Wasn't aware of that one either. Unfortunately, it'll all have to wait for a bit. He gave the laptop to my aunt/his sister, and I picked it up from her. He forgot to give her the power cord, though, and the battery just went. So I can't do anything until I swing by his office tomorrow and get the cord.
  16. Okay, I've got a problem that's got me scratching my head... A relative of mine asked me to take a look at his computer. According to him, there's a virus, specifically an abot virus. Norton was installed on the laptop, so I had it do a quick scan, and it didn't turn up anything. I booted into Safe Mode, and ran Multi Virus Cleaner from a USB flash drive, and it didn't turn up any viruses either. I booted up normally again, checked the task manager, and while there's a ton of crap running, I didn't see anything I couldn't identify. I even tried having Windows search for any "abot" related files, and when that turned up nothing, I took a peak into the Windows, Windows\System, and Windows\System32 files. There's definitely something seriously wrong with it, though. The computer seems to boot fine, but if you try to open "My Computer," either from the desktop icon or from the start menu, nothing happens. Clicking on anything else, even stuff that worked before trying to open My Computer, no longer does anything. You can't even close an open window... the X button does the animation that indicates it was clicked, but nothing happens. Starting the task manager before clicking My Computer will start it like normal, but if you start it after clicking my computer, Windows Explorer stops. The start menu, task bar, system tray, and all desktop icons disappear. There are a few other things I do want to try, but honestly, I'm thinking that it might be time for the ol' wipe it and reinstall Windows. The thing does look to be about 3 or 4 years old. But before I go through the hassle (this is one of his work computers, so I don't have all his software), I'm open to any other suggestions.
  17. Not 100% sure, as I've never owned an Apple Cinema display, but I seem to recall that there are different versions of the DVI standard, and there might be an incompatibility.
  18. Doubt they'll ever do it, but I'd love to see writing of the caliber of Beast Wars and Animated applied to more traditional-looking characters. Like maybe an animated/GGI show with the Classics/Universe characters.
  19. Yeah, I don't get what prompted Wal-Mart to go from $7.77 to $12.98. That's almost a 70% increase. Sure, they were drastically undercutting the price before, but still, when I can go to Toys R' Us and get the cheapest price (last time I was there, they were still $10.99), something just isn't right. Even then, wasn't the dollar increase due to the ridiculous oil prices over the summer? Now that oil's a third of what it was then, can't we go back to $9.99, or is inflation going to be the new excuse? Cheer up, I've hit Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, and Target all at least once a week, and I haven't seen hide nor hair of Inferno either.
  20. Ah, you're right, I didn't read the first post carefully. I thought we were just talking about the novel, and wishing an anime'd get made.
  21. Well, I'm glad to hear it's not 0083. As far as Unicorn goes, I don't think anyone's asserting that it's getting animated, just wishing.
  22. I agree 100% And yet, the Zeta movies probably moved a crap load more Zeta kits for designs 20 years old. What's more, Unicorn, Sentinel, and Crossbone are not easily had in English, so it stands to reason that Western fans might want animes. Because aside from novels, manga, or little OVAs, we don't get new UC series. The last six TV series were all AU. Even when we do get OVAs, they're usually beating the dead horse that is the One Year War. Which would be during the One Year War.
  23. Mitsuko Kase might not have died, but she was still replaced by Takashi Imanishi after 7 episodes. Kung flu's comments still stand, IMHO.
  24. Well, a totally new series is still better than a remake of 0083. Side note, does anyone know if there are any plans to translate Unicorn and bring it out for Western fans?
  25. Sure, if by perfect you mean fantastic mecha having really flashy battles. Story-wise, it was a mess. That said, I don't want a remake of it either... I'd rather just forget about it, and hope for a Unicorn or Crossbone Gundam anime.
