  1. Remember that HG claim that they have Worldwide (excluding Japan) rights to SDF: Macross, just they refused to give Animegio more than Region 1 rights. Madman's success from selling Robotech, also licensed direct from HG, probably showed that they could handle the other shows.

I never knew this...those b***ards.....they have worldwide distribution rights?! Damn! Makes you wonder how much they actually paid for the licenses.

  2. On the issue of copyrights, who would Madman have to buy licenses from to release Macross in Australia? Studio Nu or HG? Why does it have to have a HG logo on it? Cause HG subbed it? Just wondering. I'm still abit confused over the whole copyright issue Ewilen posed.

Another question, does these DVDs have dubs? If so, are they the exact same "robotech dubs" or are they a whole different dubbing?

  3. I originally posted this on the problems thread...but lacked any response. So here it is.

Received my takatoys stickers from tmp. W00ts! So I started peeling them yamato stickers, that's when I realise, SOME of them I only peeled off the top layer. Apparently the Yamato stickers have a top layer which looks very visible if stuck to the plastic, but it can be removed and makes the sticker much thinner and less visible on the seams. Did anyone know about this?

I found it really hard to take out this layer for most of the stickers though while my real intent was to just peel those yamato stickers off. Its very random that I manage to peel just the layer, and not the whole sticker itself.

So you're saying that the Yamto stickers have a protective layer over the actual sticker and overall are thinner than what most people believed?

    :Dat

Yes...unless of course peeling of the said layer was not intended to happen. I tried peeling some with the intent of only peeling the top layer...but usually I just yank off the whole sticker. Its strange. So i'm curious if that top layer was intended for removal.

The stickers are very very thin after you peel off that layer.

  6. But reading the Berne thing a little more, it seems its not so much of distributing the videos that is the problem. Its more of the visual editing of the show (to add in subtitles) that is causing the problem because you require permission from the copyright owner to translate the work.

Okay, again, I'm not a lawyer, but I've been reading up on Japanese copyright law and a bit on US copyright law. If you're saying that distributing the videos without editing them would be okay, I'm afraid you're mistaken. (I don't think you're saying that but I want to be clear.)

That's exactly what I'm saying. It falls under fair use and most people would argue that its for "educational purposes" and own use. Gray area there for you. Its no different from some dude who recorded a show off TV, and decided to borrow his copy to friends who missed the show. If you say this is illegal, VHS or any recording sort of medium might as well be illegal as well if you argue that copying off TV makes the copy an unauthorised copy.

  7. ewilen: ahh...interesting. Thanks for the links. Yes, it seems there's a difficulty enforcing a copyright outside the country origin rather than there's no protection if its outside the country of origin. Thanks for clearing that up for me. ;)

The way I understand it from all those links, it would be technically legal if fansubs distributed translations on a .txt file....or a .sub file for vobsub use (which is basically a text file with timestamps to tell when the text shows up on screen), fansubs would probably be legal since recording anime and distributing it falls under fair use (unless its for commercial gain). If what I'm assuming is right, .sub files will be the next "in thing" for fansubbers if license enforcers decide to take legal action against fansubs. (like the RIAA-scale campaigns)

  8. And lastly, what is the purpose of a fansub? To provide a faithful yet understandable version of the orignal or just plain pirating?

Welcome to the world of fansubbed anime. Fansubs' original main purpose is to provide anime translated to fans by fans, and to promote it to the masses. There might not be such a big anime following in the west as there would be now if it wasn't for fansubs. Its because of fansubs as well that anime licensing companies pop up like ADV, Pioneer, etc, since they realise there is a market for english speakers.

Brief history lesson. Before the Internet, anime enthuthiasts traded what little anime VHS they had amongst each other, and subbed them (with what arcane technology they had) and distributed to people who are interested. Now with the Internet, everything else is history.

Today, ethical fansubbers will stop subbing an anime once it gets licensed by a company. But even if they don't stop, copyright laws do not have full enforcement over the material subbed. Its a gray area. For example, what if the fansubber is not located in the US? If he/she was from China....and Macross Zero is not licensed there, does HG or anyone else has any right to tell them to stop fansubbing Mac 0?

    Hope that helps. ;)

  9. Not really a problem....more like a question.

But I've seen pictures that some have posted and their 1/48 valk's stickers look....not like stickers. I mean, the transparent parts don't even seem to be there. Example, the UNSPACY sticker on the gunpod, looks like it was painted on, not sticked on where if you use the stickers provided by Yamato, you can see quite clearly the transparent parts. Do you guys use alternative stickers/decals?

ANd I can't for the life remmeber where I posted this, but some dude's custom with fastpacks, had white "Beware of Blast" stickers on them, where Yamato supplied black ones which can't be seen. Where do I get those "easier to see" stickers? Thanks.

PS: and what exactly is this "chair-like-thingy" which comes with the 1/48 fastpacks that I'm supposed to attach to the Battroid's backpack area.

  10. I personally have seen my fare share of bad Subs... I have no problem dealing with spelling errors, or slight gramerical errors (normal EngRish). The stuff that makes me laugh and frustrates me at the same time are the "utter gibberish" subs. I have seen subs that read like "The Cat fire to the car, hoses make better trees." you sit there and rewind-play-rewind-play-pause... WTF? then fast-foreward past that scene. ;)

LOL! I believe babelfish is at work there....or some hongkies doing some major major literal translation from Chinese to English.

  11. My brother has one and he hates the thing due to it's complicated transformation.

Don't own one, but from pictures and reviews, it looks pretty simple to transform. Like a plane with folded in limbs. Just unfold the limbs and drop the nose cone...voila. Looks that way anyway....guess its not that simple. lol.

  12. Question:

    DSCN2458.jpg

How do I make the stickers less visible on the sides....and how did you get the white "Beware Of Blast" stickers for the fast packs? The black ones Yamato provided can't be seen on the fastpacks....neither the red "No Step"s as well. Are these Takatoys stickers?

  13. What they want is irrelevant if the government mandates they HAVE to submit to cloning. Survival outside of the cities is a questionable prospect at best, even with the reclamation project going on.

I'd give my sample and get on with life.

Same genetic material, not same person. Environment shapes appearances to some degree, and personality to a great degree.

And how does the moral dilemma of cloning compare to the moral dilemma of letting humanity die out?

Morals are all relative, and this one wasn't a debate people could afford to have.

You make it sound as if the UN military are Nazis. Well...they were bastards during Space War 1....but they were more or less wiped out leaving Global and the other general dudes forming the new military and UN Government.

I know its not the same person...I mean, you know what they say that you'd probably meet one person in your life that looks exactly like you. With cloning...you'd probably see 5-10...and I guess that's kinda freaky in itself.

True...cloning would be the best solution for huge scale interplanetary immigration....but I have a feeling this would cause them to get bitten in the butt in the future....
