The computer and electronics super geek thread
David Hingtgen replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ok, did as many of those tweaks as I could (some don't seem present in the latest version of Firefox). Firefox seemed to tie IE for Boeing.com re-load, and BBC.co.uk non-cached. (BBC is 17 secs, yeesh) Still---I had to mod/tweak just to match IE's fairly default settings? (I've made a zillion changes to IE, but 99% are for security/ads, not speed) PS---is there a way to disable recent history, or have it clear it automatically? I can only find the "automatically delete ALL history when browser is closed" option. I like history---I just don't want it to always show my past 10 sites to anyone who might look over my shoulder or something. Oh, one more thing---if the cursor is over a video, the mouse wheel no longer scrolls. This is annoying---if I'm using the mouse wheel, I want it to scroll, period--encountering an unexpected embedded video instantly stops my scrolling. Workaround/fix? -

Re-loaded Boeing.com front page, presuming it's cached: IE7: 3 secs for "main" stuff, 4 secs for everything. Firefox: 13 secs for main stuff, 15 secs for everything. About 10 secs of that was "transferring data from Boeing.com". Seriously, 10 secs to analyze something that should mostly be cached? Firefox takes from 70 to 200 megs of RAM. IE 7 very similar. -

Well, I tried removing "offending" ad sites from my hosts file etc, and it seems to make little difference. Firefox just seems to "interpret" ads different or something. And it sure doesn't explain the delays at MW and other sites, with no ads. Boeing's front page was a huge difference. From having nothing at all cached, IE needed 6 seconds to have the page displayed/done, with 2 more secs to get their fancy flash intro finished. Firefox took over 20 secs just to get past a blank white screen. -

Ironically, Firefox froze for about 30 secs when I brought up the list of add-ons. Currently installed: NoSquint (disabled) Customize menus (because otherwise right-clicking brings up like 20-30 options) RightClick (disabled) Searchbar autosizer (because my searches are usually more than 10 characters long) Firefox just likes to "freeze" a lot. Sometimes 2 secs, sometimes 20-30. But it does, and often. And even when it doesn't--every site loads slower than with MSIE. It's especially noticeable in forums, where I swear it "grabs 3 posts, waits for you to scroll down, then grabs 3 more, and repeats"--it's like it loads one post at a time, as needed. I run my PC as stripped down as possible--if I don't need it, my PC doesn't load it. I have disabled many of Windows' default "services" etc. There's not many things to interfere with. My anti-virus is currently Avast 5. Really, I wonder if hosts/adblocking etc are causing an issue--Firefox seems to like to "keep trying" to get something that's blocked--like ads! My hosts file has quite a few ad-sites listed, but it sometimes seems like Firefox is trying to still connect, and delaying loading the rest of the page because of it---whereas as IE simply "skips" those sites. Neogaf really brings out the difference between IE and Firefox--especially in the ad category. They flat-out simply don't appear on IE, but Firefox seems to try hard to get ads that are blocked, brings up ads IE doesn't even seems to be aware exists, and does the "load posts 3 at a time" thing. -

Ok, am I doing something wrong or what? I finally tried Firefox. And IMHO, it sucks. It loads much slower, every site is slower, and it loves to "pause" all the time while loading sites/pages. It has frozen more in the past 2 days than IE has in the past 2 years. However, MSIE 7 is now so old, not all sites work well with it. But I intend to continue using IE7 as my primary, and Firefox only when needed. (IE 8 sucks, hate it, and IE 9 requires Vista/7) For being so raved about, I have yet to see what's so great about Firefox. Just to type this post, I had to wait about 20 secs for "read Macrossworld.com" and "gathering data from Macrossworld.com". While IE 7 takes about 0.25 secs to load everything... (annoyingly, the last big MW update doesn't work well with IE7, but IE7 is so much faster I intend to keep using it for MW) -
The pessimist in me says some gimmick that'll compromise sculpt/articulation. Like quad-light-up forearm blades or something.

A big consideration was simply "I ran out of space". I really have to sell some stuff off. (plus, frankly---MP Grimlock is little more than a bigger G1 Grimlock) I'm a big Grimlock fan, but cost/size considerations sealed it for me. As for new Prime--probably, but will it be better than ROTF Prime? Or are they going to simplify it so that Prime+trailer is cheaper than it'd otherwise be? Or just reduce the paint apps even further, to cut costs.
-
Ironically, I just cancelled mine.
-
Yeah, I was thinking of that, could be "only" 9 months or so until the TF3 stuff comes out---surely they'll add SOME paint apps when they re-release that mold. (or, an all-new mold with trailer--though I fear that they may simplify the bot so as to reduce the overall cost)
-
I'm thinking of cancelling my MP Grimlock order and using the money for a Buster Prime or something. (I do not have the 09 Leader Prime mold at all---I refused to buy the US version due to lack of paint on the doors/windows, etc). However, Buster Prime is still fairly rare/expensive. (of course, I would like the 2-pack faceplate version better and even much prefer the recolored Jetfire to my own, but that's way too much money to justify on a minor repaint of one I already have) But I am a fan of transformation over most anything, and Buster Prime blows away MP Grimlock in that regard. (plus, I still have my minty G2 Grimlock) Comments/opinions? PS--my Jp chromed 07 movie Prime is for sale, to help fund this either way. PPS--sigh, if only Hasbro had released a version of 09 Prime that at least had the doors painted--I don't NEED the chrome and pinstripes, but I do want the entire cab itself painted...

MP Grimlock and Animated Rodimus out at TRU in the US, multiple sightings today. I just happened to be by mine today looking for something else but saw nothing.
-
Gah, I could swear it was Lilformers style, and not Shortpacked... Mental error!
-
I can't find a comic I know I saw recently: It was either drawn by Matt Moylan/Lilformers, or a VERY good copy of his style. It was panels of WFC Prime saying "node". I've checked everywhere, and can't find it.

The Transformers 3 Thread--A Michael Bay Thread

Looks like an airport firetruck. -
The pic that wasn't there back when I made my post 3.5 days ago? Yeah, NOW there's pics showing more of the trailer and RP's back, but when I originally posted--there was little more than "that's a lot of back kibble" and "that one bit looks like Hot Rod's rear tailight/fender"--which could still of course, be what RP's rear tailight/fender looks like. Nobody wants there to be a perfect car-mode Hot Rod in there than me, but I'll wait until Takara says/shows it.
-
Is there a bigger version? Hard to follow some of the lines.
-
protostar--you can't quote my 3-day-old post and then say "no, the latest is this"... It was the latest at the time I posted. RDblade--as I said before, simply having HotRod-esque details doesn't mean it's HotRod---what does the back end of Rodimus' cab look like? Probably a lot like Hot Rod's, just not as sleek. At the moment, I'm still pessimistic, but slightly hopeful, that a perfect Hot Rod vehicle is in there.
-
I keep wondering--are the prototype pics they show the actual ones Wheeljack made, or their own versions? I know Wheeljack put noseart on most of his, but the pics igear show usually hide where it'd be. (of course, I still have serious issues with the Dirge one--Thrust and Ramjet were done much better IMHO) (not real fond of Thurst having Bullpups, but it's better than Dirge's obvious "stabs as canards, with nav lights and ECM still attached"
-
Germany also did the "model name is the year of design" thing, at least for WWII ship armaments.
-
I just found the easy way to open the canopy: Open the nosegear doors. Look up inside the gear bay. Almost dead center, in the most-recessed part of the bay, will be a little rectangle. It's the canopy's lock-tab. Push a toothpick in there and the canopy will open right up. Much easier than trying to open it from above, and with no risk of scratching off the paint.

Stickers match the tampo printing better than I thought they would--not a perfect match though---but impossible to tell on the tailfins as there's nothing nearby to compare it to. Stickers are the thinnest I've encountered I think. Trim the ones for the legs VERY closely--even then they'll overlap the striping a bit. BTW--it's nigh-impossible to get the tailfin ones on straight--the swept, angled fins and italicized numbers really mess with your senses--they'll look different if you move your head even SLIGHTLY.

Graham, to clarify for region-locking: Hong Kong, Japan, and the USA, are all the same region when it comes to Blu-Rays. A great boon to anime fans. Now, a PS3 will not retroactively allow DVD's from all those different contries to be played on it (DVD region locking is entirely separate), but it will take any game or Blu-Ray movie from them equally. (a further note is that many Blu-Ray movies from the major studios are region-free anyways, and all PS3 games themselves are region-free) In short---having "region-locked" issues are fairly rare for a PS3. 20th Century Fox is notable for region-locking their movies--but again, US/JP/HK are all the same for Blu-Ray.

Yamato 1/60 VF-19 Fire Valkyrie
David Hingtgen replied to UN Spacy's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
IMHO the 1/60 YF-21 is too bright--should be darker to match the anime. First release of the 1/72 was the best-colored YF-21 toy. The VF-19F/S should be the color the 1/60 YF-21 turned out to be. -
LOL, the latest latest theory/discussion at TFW2005 actually fits with what I thought when the wheels on his legs were first seen: Not Hot Rod, but merely a "very complete" vehicle mode/cab for Rodimus, that is of course Hot Rod-esque in style/design. Or in other words--if you remove Rodimus' trailer, there's still a vehicle left, and not half a vehicle with legs sticking out.

My beef with PCC isn't the lack of robot modes---it's the lack of limb modes! Seriously, even most of the worst of G1 combiner limbs, were more limb-like than these. You'd think that not having a robot mode, would lead to better limb modes. But I don't think ANY of these have decent hands/arms yet, and very few are decent legs/feet. I would buy a combiner that had no individual robot modes in a second--if combined mode had decent hands and feet, and not a collection of long gangly hinges with a sideways-mounted claw on the end.
