  3. +100.....if my trip to Taiwan becomes a reality in Feb and if MF is playing there, I'm going to try and talk the GF into seeing it with me.....otherwise I guess I'll just have to wait for a bootleg copy or a download w/ fansubs.
  4. OK, so after not having seen it in over two years, I popped in my DVD of DYRL last night. One thing that struck me about DYRL was how ahead of its time it was in terms of its technical qualities - all in the days before CGI! If anything, I feel the art is better than Frontier. Yeah, I know Frontier's a TV series and DYRL is a movie (therefore more dollars/yens/etc. per minute of film) and the styles are different. I also realized Frontier lacks a good instrumental soundtrack compared to DYRL and I do like Minmay's songs more than Sheryl's....

  6. Gotta agree with David Hintgen: VF-84 flew only early to mid A's - this toy is definitely more an A+ which VF-84 never flew to my knowledge. Too bad, really, would've loved to see one in the scheme of VF-111 "Sundowners" which this particular model won't be correct for.
  7. They don't show up on my kit as being used and also note they're not numbered. Hasegawa probably included those for a service bird option that didn't wind up in the instruction manual. Also, there's a chance the decal artist had some extra space left over and decided to put those in to give Macross fans some love!
  8. That's the beauty of the Tamiya Corsair: the F4U-1D kit is overall Gloss Sea Blue (available in a Tamiya spray can I believe). The only other paints you'll need, at a minimum (get the little bottles and brush paint these), is dark green for the interior and flat black ( I use "German Gray" which is a very dark gray) for the tires. And remember this hobby is fun!
  9. If you've never built a model before, I wouldn't recommend a Hasegawa "jet" kit be your first. While generally the fit, detail & fidelity are second to none, they can be "fiddly".....their 1/48 F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18C Hornet come to mind. After looking through my copy of the YF-19, I would put it in the same category as the Hornet in size and complexity. If you're new at this, my recommendation is to start off with a Tamiya 1/48 kit first like their F4U Corsair: it's fairly cheap, is considered one of the easiest 1/48 kits to build and look good, and has a simple color scheme of all-over Gloss Sea Blue including the wheel wells! Once you have that under your belt, if you want to try a jet, check out a Hasegawa F-16 (it's also fairly cheap if you can find an older boxing, is an easy build and has a fairly simple camouflage scheme of three grays) or jump into the VF-1 or YF-19 kits. And remember: this hobby is fun!
  10. So comparing Navy Seals to giant robots in outer space is an apples / oranges comparison? Can't disagree with that....And of course the whole thing was a set-up. But if his beef is a sniper taking up position on a moving base and taking out bad guys that are also moving, it's most certainly done. It's not ideal or preferred but it is done. And in a firefight, you fight with what you brung.
  11. I could give a rat's a** what he thinks - I like Frontier and Macross / DYRL just fine. To me, that's all that matters.

Maybe he has a point: the scenario above is about as realistic as US Navy Seals sniping Somali pirates from the fan deck of a US destroyer while the pirates are taking cover inside a lifeboat......while both vessels are moving independently of each other floating on the ocean! Good grief - what are those Frontier guys thinking!!

  14. Not to burst anyone's bubble but I'm a Hasegawa 1/48 aircraft fan for like forever. I guarantee you this kit will only give you the basic VF-1 and you will have to buy the various boxings for a 1S, 1J, Strike pack and underwing ordnance. Basically what they've been doing w/ the 1/72 kits. However, if you wait around long enough, Hasegawa may release a special boxing in which they'll include all three heads. I will stil buy this kit as the Dash 1 is my favorite and 1/48 is my scale of choice!

It's also the song MinMay sings at the very end of DYRL: i.e. she taps her toes after waving the song sheet to Misa while humming to herself "1, 2, 3, 4....1, 2, 3, 4.....1, 2, 3, 4............................and 1, 2....." then starts singing which rolls into the ending credits / MinMay concert....at least that's what happens on the DYRL DVD's I own. And yeah, "Angels Paint" is my favorite MinMay song followed closely by "Ai wo Oboteimasu ka? - Do You Remember Love?"

Not sure a Macross where the Destroids are center stage would work but if a character was a Destroid pilot - maybe the best friend of the hot-shot VF pilot? - and be involved in the requisite Macross love triangle, that could create some interesting tensions (not only in the love triangle but also the different battle perspectives of the two pilots).
  17. Destroids: the Macross equivalent of the Star Trek red shirts..... I've always found it funny how vulnerable Destroids are to enemy fire (i.e. one hit and they're toast) when they're the equivalent of current day armor and a Valkyrie can take multiple hits and keep flying and fighting. I know I'm in the minority here but I think a Macross character that's a Destroid pilot would be interesting as it would bring a different (ground pounder) perspective to Macross as opposed to the typical flyboy and girl attitudes. And don't discount AA capabilities: in Vietnam, the majority of American warplanes were shot down by NVA SAM's and AAA. In fact, that's why the Wild Weasel program was created.
  18. Cool - thanks. I have one of the Arii 1/160 scale kit and would love to get my hands on a 1/72 to go w/ all my other Macross kits. The one I really want in 1/72 though is the Monster from Frontier w/ Ranka cheesecake noseart!

  21. Couldn't agree w/ you more. I can't wait to get ahold of my copy - while I would've preferred a 1/48 VF-1 I'm looking forward to trying my hand on the Dash 19
  22. LOL - looks like we're in the same boat! I was originally going to build my VF25F w/ all the usual enhancements: pre-shading, panel line washes, weathering, etc. Then I read through the instruction manual and couldn't figure out a way to do that without building the thing to transform with all the screwy sub-assemblies & impossible masking that entails. So now I'm just building it w/o paint although I plan to use the decals - it would just PO me to use stickers because then it is a toy and not a model.
  23. I'm a traditional model builder and I don't build my models to be toys; therefore the transforming aspect of Bandai's models I can take it or leave it. A non-transforming model will also be much cheaper and easier to build. Also, how many of us have built the 1/72 VF25's, transformed it once or twice, mess up the decals/ stickers and then left it in whatever mode we like? Then we go out, buy two more so we can have one of each mode! That said, this is Bandai and I highly doubt they will release a non-transforming VF25 since Hasegawa does that better than anyone else (except maybe Tamiya but the Big T don't do Macross).
