Coota0
Maybe they have several frequencies to transmit with. If communication with ships to fighters can be jammed than while have the Catseye in the first place if as the comms between the AWACS and fighters can be jammed too. Of course nothing is ever easy in a war. Then again Macross has always been less about the military. If the Catseye is out with the fighters, usually the navy deploys E-2's about 100-200 miles out, the Macross can be jammed while the Catseye could be able to communicate with the fighters still. Nied
Looking at the lineart it apears that the only way you could fit a crew in the back there is if there was no room for any kind of avionics, lfe support, fuel, or engines. Remember that a vast majority of the crew on board a modern AWACs bird perform sensor analysis, which right now is a task that's too complex for a computer to do reliably. Given the computer advances provided by overtech I could see how you could eliminate those jobs and leave one person to make the command and controll decisions (which apears to be what Misa did). Another thought: If there was crew in some back compartment why didn't we hear from them? Why weren't they anylised and interogated along with Misa Hikaru and Kakizaki? hellohikaru
I have to agree with Nied on the advantages offered by overtech. The Catseye fuselage looks too narrow to have any sensible room for addtional crew. coota0 Comms between the fighters and the Catseye can be jammed just as well...i mean if the jammer is powerful enough to affect the more complex systems in the big ship like macross what price is the Catseye. Furthermore almost battle scenes seen in macross SDF take place quite near the SDF1. Wouldn't deploying the catseye only burden the overtaxed fighters with more baby sitting duty with an annoying Misa ?

I'm not saying you couldn't jam the catseye, I'm syaing that the Macross and the Cats Eye are going to be far away from each other Idealy, so you could jam communicatiosn around the macross, but not where the Catseye is. gian7675
Why not use a "Funny Chinese" on the mission? That's the real Elint predecessor, IMO. Err... excuse me but what is this "Funny Chinese" aircraft drawing? Did this Valk show up in any of the Macross Series/Movies? or is this just a line art? thanks! Commander McBride
The VEFR-1 "Funny Chinese" makes a momentary appearance in a large group of VFs in the TV series, at some time or other. I've seen the screencap around here somewhere.
nathan
I doubt there's additional crew members. Like HelloHikaru said the fusalage is too narrow. There were also no other crew members names on the plane. And if thier were why didn't Misa try and resque those crew members as soon as she got out of the cockpits? Because she just doesnt care at all !!!! Misa is cold hearted. More seriously, i don't remeber seeing the Funny Chinese Dish Valk in the show Do you mean there is one at the final space combat of Macross? When the 4 millions space ships are destroyed? I'm going to check that tonight. It's possible because there are so many planes in that particular scene.

It would be easier if you look in the TIA book poster that depicts the SDF-1 and the fleet ready for fighting (actually the animation of that scene is just the camera moving over that same static picture... ) Good hunting!! I think a lot of MW fans have started looking at the Series for the Funny Chinese By the way, does somebody here know whythey called it "Funny Chinese"? What does VEFR mean anyway? Thanks! gian7675
Ranger_Karl
Variable Electronic Forward Recon?
Nied
By the way, does somebody here know whythey called it "Funny Chinese"? What does VEFR mean anyway? Well the UN Spacy generally followes US military naming conventions meaning: The V would stand for Variable (in the current US naming system it denotes vertical takeoff such as the AV-8B Harrier or the CV-22 Osprey) The E would stand for Electronic warfare (like the E-3 Sentry or the EA-6B Prowler) The F would stand for Fighter, which really is a vestigal designation (like the EF-111 Raven) And the R would stand for Reconisance (like the RF-4 Phantom) As for the "Funny Chinese" name, it probably refers to it's apearance in batroid mode (that radome looks a little like a traditional Chinese hat). Thanks! gian7675 Just look for this picture in the TV series (final battle against Bodolza sp? fleet) I have encirlcled in green the so called Funny Chinese (VEFR-1) Some day I will finish a gerwalk model of it that I started building more than a year ago... some day... If you get a better res pic you could see that it has super parts in the legs but not in in the back. In the old forums we used to have interesting discussions about the VEFR-1 And yes, it is called funny chinese because of the battroid mode ressembling a chinese with hat. Nanashi used to have a good technical report of this VF-1 variant (it is a modified VF-1D)
Berttt
the dish is so close to the VF's body that I wonder if it's actually working at all...The aim of the dish is to recieve echos. If the body is between echos and the dish, it won't work. The real awacs have a dish that is not glued on the body of the plane. Also, awacs are flying high and they detect planes and enemies below. So, in space, what's "below" and "above" when you fly every where. It should use a sphere radar instead to look in all directions. i am not specialist I might be wrong but if you look at the planes noce radars, they have a 3D angle, and, it correspond to the front of the plane, not their back angle... Can some one confirm? I am by no means a boffin, but the replacement for the E-3 will use a phased array, eliminated the need for a large rotating radar. As I understand it phase arrays enable the operator to "steer" the signal to where it is needed. If the aircraft flies around then I'm sure it would be able to be pick up returns from aircraft in a near 360 degrees in both the x and y axis. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But the thing here is like this: a) somebody find the funny chinese/Orguss valk/Arcadia zentradi ship/want to know hot the pilot seat in a Quedluun Rau, etc. b) post asking about it c) Lot of people answer the topic since is fascinating!!! (I love those topics) d) time passes over and the topic is lost... e) go to a) That's the way it is... but I like it. It would be fine if someone as Nanashi or Egan Loo make some official site with this obscure subjects (in fact Nanashi has/or use to have a web page about some of them)

The picture is small and when it probably showed up in the series, it was probably only for a few seconds! A very sharp eye the person who spotted the Funny Chinese, he's got... I just sounded like Master Yoda there gian7675

The Macross model book 1 have a couple of model of it too. Those are books from the 80's released soon after the TV series so we had that information pretty soon. BTW: somebody just posted askeing about the funny chinese!! Now that's funny!!!
