I could imagine it being something along the lines of propaganda sent to other fleets. It's all fiction based on real events, even in the Macross-universe. If you tell it one way, you get the TV series. If you tell it another way, you get the movie. The truth is somewhere in between.

Just look at how DYRL changed even the Look of the suits and aliens, and in later series they referenced both. And in mc 7 they kept the alien look of the brain guys DYRL look.
