Probably created by protoculture (i.e the Xel'naga of the macross universe)? check. The only left thing is for this mysterious V-virus to turn the infected into Vajra and be assimilated. Ranka is somehow immune and can carry the infection without mutating. The infection is what enables her to communicate with the Vajra... Sheryl may very well end up morphing into a new Vajra Queen...
