Coyote Ragtime Show

Wow...I'm surprised no one here's talked about this anime.

Maybe because it places a distant third, behind its Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star forebearers. Really, it's just disappointing in so many regards, and at only 13 episodes it's over just as it begins to get the least bit interesting.

Oh well, might as well give my $0.02 on episode 1...

Synopsis

Federal investigator Angelica Burns and her ditzy new partner Chelsea Moore arrive at a maximum security prison to make an inquiry on an imprisoned "coyote" known only as "Mister." Their timing couldn't be any more impeccable, as Mister's old partners Bishop and Katana stage his breakout by blowing up some parts of the prison. Making matters more complicated is the appearance of Marciano's 12 Sisters, a group of bloodthirsty female android assassins. Throughout the carnage, Mister finally makes his appearance and, with his partners, makes a quick and clever getaway on a quest to reunite with a girl named Franca and search for lost treasure left by her father.

Story: B-

The first episode promises a lot, but hardly delivers anything. So we have this hot older chick who manages to stay hot, despite her eating disorder. Then we have a dozen girls in maid costumes who may have been rejected from Gunslinger Girl. All this just for some old schmoe. The storyline just drags throughout the entire length of the episode; so it wouldn't be a surprise if you fall asleep after the first two minutes.

And what's up with these hokey anime titles? Coyote Ragtime Show just sounds as bad as Pumpkin Scissors.

Animation: A-

Character designs by Jun Shibata (Bible Black, Nine O'Clock Woman) and Tomonori Sudou (Futakoi Alternative, Strawberry Marshmallow) look fairly good, but otherwise generic in comparison to other anime titles. Mechanical designs by Satoshi Takahashi (Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea) feature a very nice array of weapons. Animation quality is exceptionally good, with some nice 3D elements complementing the 2D art.

Soundtrack: B

Koichiro Kameyama's (Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, Interlude) jazzy musical score feels random and is not very memorable, though the ending theme is pretty good.

Sub vs. Dub

The English voices are acceptable, but the overall voice acting is sub-par. It sounds like they're just reading lines instead of acting them out.

DVD Extras

Not yet available.

The Bottom Line

If you're expecting an anime of the same caliber as Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star, look somewhere else. Otherwise, Coyote Ragtime Show may be the perfect cure for insomnia.
