That was truely the only Bond film with any grit and darkness like the Fleming novels, but keeping the requisite 60s charm that Connery started. What a tragic and gritty ending to On Her Majesty's Secret Service. No other Bond film is like that. It's was purely unique. Every other Bond film ends up with Bond and the girl in some wierd contraption or place, while M calls and accidentally stumbles into the awkward scene where Bond shuts him off and slips back under the covers with Bond babe. But OHMSS is completely different. I don't want to spoil if you haven't seen it. And Brosnan should've been Bond back in the 80s when he was first offered the part but had his contractual obligations to Remington Steele. And if you read the original novels, they are truely dark and nothing like the Bond we've seen in the past 30 years because they have tried to pander it to PG audiences. Casino Royale is said to reveal Fleming’s deep hatred of women and a twisted sado-masochistic sexuality. Bond toyed with the idea of marrying his fellow spy Vesper Lynd because, "the conquest of her body, because of the central privacy in her, would each time have the tang of rape". He also wants to rape her because his testicles get tortured in the story and he wants to prove desperately that he can still do it. But anyway, the new film has already lost some edge because apparentely, Bond is barred from smoking in it. He look more like a slimey euro-trash ganster to me. Bond needs to be a sexy dangerous looking mo'fo like me. They talk about doing a Batman Begins Job on Bond but what Bond been about recently? Cross Marketing! If you want a gritter Bond you need to make it a period peace (like have it back in the cold war) but the tempation for using the modern day and product placement will always be to great. VF-ZX2 Posted October 16, 2005 Share Posted October 16, 2005 I think Moore played a pretty good Bond. Brosnan played an alright Bond and I would not mind him being in more Bond movies. It is a given though that Connery is the best Bond. The Bond movies truly are going downhill. I think Tomorrow Never Dies is the last Bond movie I really felt had the suave Bond aura about it. Ever since the choices of original Fleming novels has gotten slim it has been hard to write good Bond scripts. I absolutely hated the Bond torture scene at the beginning of Die Another Day and it totally ruined the movie for me. I miss the days of good villains like Scaramanga and organizations like SPECTRE. When I watch Ronin and the Bourne Identity, I feel like I am reading a Bond book. Though I love all the movies, I think OHMSS was the only one that really captured what Bond was supposed to be, maybe From Russia with Love also. As for the rest of you, I can't see how you like Connery, but not Lazenby, Lazenby was practically a clone of the guy. He even said in interviews that his goal was for people not to notice there was a change of actor. AFAIK, Moore was Bond like Adam West was Batman. I may have enjoyed his films when I was younger (I still like The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only, though), but nowadays, it's either Connery or Brosnan. I think the other really good scripts were given to Dalton, unfortunately he wasn't good looking enough to really pull off the role. Although I've seen both The Living Daylights and License to Kill, I never saw Dalton as Bond. His portrayal was too wooden (even worse than what the late Ian Fleming had conceived Bond to be).
